I have been knitting for over 20 years, and I can tell you that I don't look much different using DPNs when I get closer to the top of a hat or the end of a sock. It can certainly feel awkward. I find that moving from one DPN to the next, I end up pulling the yarn a little harder to keep a column of looser stitches forming where I went from one needle to the next. I find I have to "weave" that yarn around the needles for the first stitch on a new DPN, but after that, it's pretty standard knitting. I think you are doing a great job and making great progress as a new knitter. I really enjoy your tutorials, and as someone who has trouble with twisted stitches when stitching in the round on a circular needle, you are giving me hope that I can do it for this hat with the looser cast-on. Thanks so much!
Wow! That’s the first time I saw dpn’s in action. It’s going to be a while till I learn this concept…lol I’m learning more and more from these tutorials. Thank you so much! Robin
Thanks Mikey. Even though I have knitted using straight needles for nearly 60 years, I’m enjoying watching your journey, even more so as it takes guts to do a tutorial let alone to show as a beginner! Congratulations and a big, big Hug your amazing. As for the “Nay Sayers”, well, as your videos are clearly titled as a knitting video,……….🤔🤨Duh!
Just when I decided to pick up knitting again, along comes Mikey!!! I’ve only used straight needles- now I’m not so scared to try circular and double pointed needles. Can’t wait til you teach us how to make socks and sweaters! (No pressure lol…)
Mikey, just saw on the Canadian Crocheter channel you've been getting lots of BS from keyboard idiots about your knitting vids. I, for one, appreciate seeing another new knitter learning the craft. Please keep putting out your knitting videos, they give me hope that I too can eventually knit.
Thank you for this video! I love the step by step instruction. I want to try this soon. I want to learn to knit, I have been practicing but haven't completed anything. I think I can do this pattern by following your video.
You're doing great Mikey, I'm not sure when you embarked on your knitting quest but you are cracking along nicely. I must say I find it fascinating watching as I knit continental. I have a wonderful knitting group and they knit like this. Ahhh ok 2 months in. Your doing great. Worth checking into doing the magic loop method to avoid having to move onto DPN'S. Also a little trick I do when working in the round. When I join the cast on row. I will slip one loop/stitch over to the other needle and then (what was the first stitch, which now becomes the second) I put the needle I just slipped from into the 2nd stitch on the other needle and cross it over the stich I just slipped and onto the 1st needle. It creates a 'x' joining the yarn nicely from the get go. Hopefully my explanation makes sense.
Hi there, I hadn't watched you for a while and recently I watched Debbie (my fellow canadian) and she spoke about your new knitting journey, I had to come see. I've only been knitting for a few years (I think we stay beginners for quite a few years lol), I"ve crocheted forever. I've tried a few times to learn knitting but always found it wasn't as quick gratification. But then I got a little older and now I have some patience so now I enjoy it. I never did take to dpn's and use the magic circle (is that what it's called?lol). You are doing fantastic!! It's great to watch someone learning and progressing in the art of knitting ... look at you go ;) Canadian hugs, Sunshine
Hi Mikey, I've been a fan for years. I used to knit a lot, but I find crocheting less painful with my carpal tunnel. One thing I would suggest is trying something other than plastic knitting needles if your working with a synthetic yarn. I find synthetic yarns will slip more easily along the needle (or hook) using a bamboo or aluminum needle. By the way, I saw your video on hooks and I agree Clover Amour is my favorite! It's the hook I'm using to make the mixed bag of colours and I'm having so much fun, it's so beautiful! Thank you for your tutorial on this, I would never have attempted it otherwise
I use circular needles for everything and I do magic loop cuz I hate dpns. And for the pom poms I use a cord clamp like you see on. Tents or some jackets you squeeze them they have a hole and you can feed your yarn or string for the Pom Pom and that works amazing so you can take it off wash the hat and put it back on
@@KarrieHop24 I do magic loop instead of the dpns when doing the decreases and the number of stitches won’t fit on the 16 circular needle. No you start at the brim and work your way to the top of the hat typically some knit patterns do start at the top and work down just depends on the pattern
This was my first finished knit item. I had started a scarf in garter stitch and decided I hated it, then I saw this hat on the O'Go packaging and I just went for it. 😆 I have a few purls where there should be knit stitches but it's a totally passable hat. I just used circular needles for the top (didn't want to buy a DPN set), it gets real tight but it's not too bad, you just scoot the stitches around until they're divided between both needles.

How do you do the magic loop with this? Do you start from the top and work your way down like crochet?

@@carollee188 I’ll have to look into that!
@@KarrieHop24 I think you are thinking of magic circle in crochet and magic loop on knitting are two different techniques
You’re doing great. Marley Bird,s Bicrafty Bootcamp Knitting for Crocheters has great tips for knitting in the round.
Thank you!❤

Life is too short not to have a pompom on your hat!! Amen!
I think I would have to use a stitch marker to find the first stitch of the row.
So I don't prefer dpn's I use the magic loop method. It's easier for me. You might check it out in the future.
Only tip I have for you Mikey is to keep knitting. Dpns are awkward 😬. I prefer magic loop over dpns. You’re doing a great job!
the height is 9 inches before decreasing?
how about the width size how many inches that you made?
