കാത്തിരുന്ന എപിസോഡ്. മാളികപ്പുറം വെറുമൊരു സിനിമയല്ല. അതിലും വലിയ എന്തോ ഒന്ന് ആ സിനിമയിലുണ്ട്. ഞാൻ എന്റെ ഫാമിലി കൂടെ ജനുവരി 1 ന് കണ്ടു. എന്റെ ഇളയ മകൾ ആദ്യം കണ്ട മൂവി. 2.5 വയസുള്ള അവൾ ഒരു പ്രശ്നവും ഉണ്ടാക്കാതെ കണ്ടു. ഇന്നും ഇതിലെ ഓരോ സ്റ്റാറ്റസ് കാണുമ്പോ കണ്ണൂ നിറയുന്നു. കുടുംബമായി പോകുന്ന ആർക്കും ഒരു സീനിലും തല കുനിച്ച് ഇരിക്കണ്ട വരാത്ത ഒരു 100 % കുടുംബ ചിത്രം. ഒരു സിനിമയിലും മുഖത്ത് ഭാവം വരാത്ത രമേഷ് പിഷാരടി പോലും അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തി. കിടപ്പറ സീനുകളോ ലിപ് ലോക്കോ അശ്ലീല തമാശകളോ ഇല്ലാതെയും സിനിമ വിജയിക്കും എന്ന് ഈ കാലത്തും കാണിച്ചു തന്ന സിനിമ. ആ ഫൈറ്റ് രാത്രി വച്ചതാണ് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടാത്തത്.💞

എന്റെ മകളും ആദ്യം കണ്ട സിനിമ.. 9 മാസം പ്രായമേ ആയുള്ളൂ... അവളും പ്രശ്നമൊന്നും ആക്കിയില്ല.. ഹരിവരാസനം ആയപ്പോ ഉറങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു... ഈ സിനിമക്ക് വല്ലാത്തൊരു ഫീൽ ആണ്...

India’s first cake was baked at Kerala’s Thalassery, formerly called Tellicherry in 1883 during the British regime. Mambally’s “Royal Biscuit Factory” that made those first cakes is still in the business tickling the pallette of cake lovers over the last 139 years.
The story goes back to the Christmas of 1883 when Murdoch Brown an English man who ran Asia’s largest British cinnamon plantation then approached the Thalassery baker Mambally Bappu with a plum cake he had brought from England and asked if the Kerala baker who then made a variety of biscuits and rusks could bake a cake for Christmas. Murdoch also handed over a few ingredients including raisins, cocoa, dates and raisins besides giving an oral demonstration of baking cakes. He recommended French brandy too, from Mayyazhi, now Mahe. However a creative and talented Mambally Bappu “sourced choicest of spices from Malabar coast and introduced a Desi flavour by using arrack, a local brew made using apple and Kadazhipalam, a variety of banana” says Renuka Bala, the fifth generation entrepreneur from the Mambilly family who runs the bakery now at Thalassery. She added “The cake, Bappu made worked magic when he presented it to Murdoch who found it “excellent” and ordered a dozen more cakes before Christmas. As the business flourished it also imprinted Thalassery in the cake map of India.
Bappu’s successor Mambally Gopalan took the business to greater heights.

A lot has been said about the magical element in the film. Here Pisharody says it is a balancing act between Bhakti walking on hot coals, and yukti urging to walk fast.
Magic is a most enjoyable element in literature and arts including films. However, in this film, the magic is left intact only for kallu. For the audience, the magic built up by symbolisms is broken in the end. Since comparison has been made with that old classic Nandanam, I say the magic in Nandanam was much stronger than in Malikappuram. There magic is left intact not only for Balamani, but for the audience too. In both films, the other characters within the film have a loving indulgence for both balamani and kallu for their magic, but with a knowing smile, that says “we know it is her imagination, but hey,let us play along”. In Nandanam, while the other characters don’t have the magic, the audience can choose - either to keep the magic with balamani or to smile at her with the other characters. In Malikappuram, the audience cannot choose to keep the magic. The only one who can keep the magic is kallu. Is it good or bad? There is a segment who enjoy the magic, they don’t come to the cinema looking for a study class in logic. They are perfectly rational people outside the cinema hall, they don’t need magic in their lives, yet they enjoy magic as art. But still, perhaps this makes the film acceptable to a wider audience who don’t want to enjoy magic as art.
But even as the magic is broken, it is not via a rationalization of a rationalist. It is not a balancing act as Pisharody says between faith walking on hot coals, and rationalism urging to walk fast. Rather it is the rationale of Tattvamasi, that ayyappan is no different from ayyappadas. No need to rationalise the magic, the apparent magic is the rationale of tattvamasi. The eternal constancy of the Real, the veiling of the real, and the projection of appearance.
The symbolisms used help - like the bad man’s name is Mahi and the story of Mahishasuran is narrated. The way ayyappadas sits is the particular yoga pose of swami ayyappan (minus the yoga patta). How Harivarasanam make sayyappadas sleepy. These moments transfer the magic in kallu’s mind to the audience.
