To finish my first contribution to your subscribers, I would like to share my experience by telling everyone that big DSLRs don't mean big photos or big photographers. With the Fuji gear I use now I am able to work doing what I really wanted (from studio portraits to night events as well as my real passion; street photography) with much less stress, weight and menus. With more useful and accessible gear. The equiptment I presented below is my perfect combination for what I do and it is giving me freedom to get where I wanted with my photography. One more time, thank you Ted!
+Lome Roger Yeah Lome, I even find that having a smaller camera makes things that much easier with my clients and models - less intimidating large body and lens pointed at them. The photo shoot experience has a much easier, laid back and intimate, creative vibe. I didn't really expect that but it's a nice addition to what Fuji brings. Thanks again, Lome!
I'm doing the same thing Ted. And it has been your videos that have swayed me to go from my precious Olympus E5 over to a Fuji XT-1. Thank you so much for your videos and inspiration.
Hello Ted! I'm a Brazilian photographer who studied photography in Toronto - Canada but now I live in Japan for good. I want to thank you for bringing this channel "dedicated" to Fuji photographers/users. Great language, great manners, great content, great presentation and last but not least, great photographs. I started as a Nikon shooter and staid loyal to the brand for four years until I switched to Canon. Again, after a long time building a good and expensive setup with my Nikon gear I decided to do the same for Canon, even if I knew I wold put much more money this time. For another four years I was happy with the Canon gear (even more than with the Nikon). When the X-T1 was launched I borrowed from my friend for a week, just to know if that little camera would make me buy a third brand... It only took me one week to decide to get rid of all my Canon and Nikon gear and marry Fuji.
Ted we have corresponded before and as usual this video is very informative and appreciated. I worked for Nikon for 33 years and when I retired at the age of 58 I continued to use it for a couple of more years. Then I wanted something smaller and lighter and wound up with Pentax K10 and 20 cameras which were superb. Then I became intrigued with Olympus four thirds and found the images and glass that produced those images were excellent. Finally I went to micro four thirds and I had no complaints with image quality, but the menus drove me insane. As soon as the Fuji Xpro1 became available I jumped on it and have never looked back. Now it is the Fuji Xt1 with several prime lenses and a couple of adapted Nikon lenses and could not be happier. Small, lightweight, incredible optics, simple menus, versatile controls. Love it.
+ELLIOT STERN Yeah man, I am more and more happy everyday that I made the switch to Fuji. I almost went for micro four thirds a few years ago for just a "fun" camera, but that's when I found the X100 and went that route instead... which eventually brought me here on the Fuji side of life. :) Thanks Elliot!
Hi Ted I’m Howie I owned a mom & pop camera store for 43 years. I have a Fuji xe1 & xe2s and 4 lenses and love the black & whites. I just enlarged a print in color for the Cardinal in Newark NJ it was tack sharp. Keep up the great work I’ve seen all of your videos and love them. I’m taking photos since the late 1950s. Howie G.
Thanks for the shoutout Ted. Cool video and thanks for helping us Fuji shooters out by sharing your passion and settings. Regards from (still wet and rainy) UK.
+Kevin Mullins Hey Kevin, my pleasure and thanks very much, man! Yeah, I've always loved whatever gear I've shot with, but I've never been so passionate and inspired like this. Something different with Fuji. Thanks again from Vegas, where I wish I could get some rain a little more often! ;)
Have to admit I am loving these Fuji videos! Got myself a XT10 recently, and it's great to hear about how others are using the system. Keep up the great work!
Fuji XM-1 for about four days now. Body bought separately from kit lens. Both cost 290. Naturally, early pics are bumping into the camera, getting mixed up, wondering why pressing on the vertical wheel doesn't five me a full digital zoom to help focus, even when the manual says you've picked the right manual setting to get it, and of course early pics are from inside the house, playing around with macro, etc. Today..I walked a couple of blocks with it. Late afternoon around 5. There are a couple of very large flowering creatures across the street. Exotic, thick leaves like iceplant, tall stalks. huge blooms. Decided to try the black and white setting in manual, trying to not shoot above 400, trying to shoot dark, at wide, at zoomed in. I shot black and white because I noticed a while before that the camera had trouble in macro shooting roses next door, as there wasn't enough contrast to help focus. Well, try black and white and see how much better it does. I liked the jpegs. I went home, still hadn't figured out how to open raw in the app, so only had jpegs. About 5 percent of them looked like I had studied Ansel Adams Zone system for years. It was crazy what I was looking at. The leaves had dust on them, catching the light, so I needed to spot these hot particles. And lemme tell you, not much else. I've been in the biz since 1970. This may be the most uncanny day I've ever had. No one is supposed to go out and shoot the kind of images I got on the first day with a camera. I reopened the raw app, finally figured out that after opening a raw pic, selecting Development under File would let me save to jpeg or tiff. But who would have guessed... Now tomorrow, I'll be right back at those giant flowering beasts shooting raw. Trying to get what I got on jpeg. Because prints will be made of these. Ask, I'll show. Crazy. I mean crazy.
Ted!!!! I watched your early videos ten years ago!! Still own and use Fuji xt 1!!! Looking back on pictures… the ones that make me go “wow” are the Fuji ones. Great stuff.
Love your work Ted and thank you for sharing. One thing I've found is just by taking your advice of autoISO 200-6400 has made me a better shooter. Set my SS 60 to 120 range and I'm no longer worried about getting a blurry image. I'm getting older/ a bit shaky and was consumed with my stabilized lens. Taking 3-5 photos of the same thing just to make sure I got a sharp one at a lower SS and 100-200 ISO. That all ended after I watched your video and started looking at photos from the past. Grain is good and I'm embracing it.
Hey J W, thanks for your comment, man. Yeah, I know what you mean about getting older. These days I'm shooting manual focus rangefinder film and digital cameras. I'm fine with it for now, but my eyesight isn't great. Hopefully I can shoot with these for many years to come. I've just grown so attached to manual focus. Thanks again.
@@TedVieira Thanks again Ted. Actually got photo of the week on the fujifilm facebook page using your settings. The image is pretty much straight out of camera. facebook.com/fujifilmcameras/photos/a.256934999307/10157770582019308/?type=3&theater
Tried setting the xt1 to ISO Auto for night shooting - WOW! Never expected to get such wonderful images. XT-1 is an outstanding camera. Thanks so much for all the great advice.
+Michael Czahur Yeah man, isn't that awesome!? I go out at night a lot and will with Auto ISO I'm taking shots and 3200, 4000, 5000 and even 6400 sometimes. It's street stuff so I don't mind if it get's a little noisy at all (which is still pretty minimal). One thing I've noticed is that I don't even really mind the look of the noise from Fujis. With my Canon it wasn't pretty, but even the noise looks more pleasing on the X-T1 and X100T. Thanks Michael!
I now shoot mostly jpgs, simply because, as you clearly state, getting the shot as you capture it exactly how you want it is so much better than relying on LR, and that classic chrome look is so gorgeous, i now use it 90% of the time, other times i will use astia, which is a bit more vibrant but not so overpowering as the velvia look, which is way too saturated at its base level with nothing tweaked, i usually reduce colour by -1 if need be, and fuji's in body B&W is simply stunning, i have used it several times now and im always impressed with its IQ, and yes, darker shadows are a must! I only shoot on a lowly x-a2 but with that 35mm f2 lens, the camera blows my tiny little mind! I am hoping fuji give us all the new Accros film sim in a future FW update, but im sure i read somewhere that fuji wont be doing anymore FW updates, i cant see that being the case though! Great video, really enjoyed it =)
+Alexandra Starr (photographer) Hey Alexandra, yeah I agree with you on all of that! I hadn't heard that about Fuji, not continuing with FW updates. That's kind of one of the main things that's really impressing people with their brand right now. Doubt they'll change course there. Yeah, the 35 f2!!! I love that lens so much! Thanks Alexandra, have a great weekend!
+Ted Vieira i think they will continue FW updates for the higher end range, the x-t1, xt10, xpro1 and xe2 etc, but the lower end like my x-a2 and the x-m1 will only get fw updates when new lenses are released, with no additional functionality, the x-t1 though, i do love that camera, its on my list of potential future buys, and if the x-t2 does come out this year, the x-t1 will become the bargain of the century lol
+Alexandra Starr (photographer) Yeah Alexandra, those cameras have been a little off my radar so haven't been following what Fuji has been doing there. But I also imagine that in general the people shooting with those cameras might not be as concerned about the FW updates as the people using the upper X series cameras. Yeah, if you can pick up an X-T1 for a great price with the X-T2 drops - man, you'll be getting a powerful camera. The updates that will probably be coming on the X-T2 will be very cool (if similar to the X-Pro2 features), but won't be so far superior to what the X-T1 already delivers. I can only guess about all of this right now though. It will be interesting (and exciting) to see what they deliver with the X-T2 when it actually is announced! Thanks very much, Alexandra!
Thanks for your reply, Ted. I like the TCL, it's a great addition to the Fuji X-100t. With almost no lost of image quality. Fuji did a great job with both converters. It's nice to have a light travelkit with the classic focallenghts of 28-35 and 50mm. The only thing is the weight, you need the thumbgrip for a perfect balance.
+Robert van Heumen Yeah Robert, I noticed the very difference in the 'feel' of the X100 with the TCL. A little nose-heavy, but I need to get used to walking around with it. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get out later tonight. :)
Thanks for you reply Ted. Let me know what you experince are. Good luck with it. Cheers, Robert. Btw don't forget to press the button on your X-100t to add the tcl-convector. 😀
I am also a b&w guy, and i am mainly shooting black and white film, but the Fuji made me liking digital color shooting AND even though i completely abandoned digital last year and sold out most of my Canon gear, i now started shooting digital again from time to time, because i happened to grab a bargain on Fuji X-Pro1 with couple of lenses. I use same settings for my street b&w except i also reduce NR to -1, and for color, i shoot Velvia simulation, also extra punch version (contrasty). It's scary how this simulation looks like a real Velvia! I understand it's a same company but man, it's SO close to the quality and feeling of film - not that i see myself abandoning film in the nearest future, but it's fun to shoot digital with Fuji (never thought i'd say that). Yeah and monochrome modes KICK ASS! I certainly see myself buying X-Pro2 in the future, when i can afford it.
Yeah Dani, I would shoot color for clients but usually would always prefer b&w (still do prefer b&w for the most part), but since I've been shooting with Fuji I am really enjoying the color I get from these files- beautiful! Thanks man!
My X100F has such good jpgs (and this was one of the reasons I went with it) that I have changed my LR workflow entirely. I shoot RAW + jpg. I copy all the files into an archive folder from the SD card. Next step is I create a sub folder called RAW and move all the raw files into it. I import only the jpgs in place into LR. If I find that I don't like the jpg during post, I import the raw file at that time and process it. It is painful because there is no linkage, if I delete a jpg from LR, the raw is effectively orphaned in its sub folder. I asked around on the LR forums and I was the odd man out on this (as I expected). LR will like the jpg and raw files, but you will only see the raw after that takes place. I wanted to do the opposite. I am looking forward to the new firmware and Fuji raw processing app coming out this November/December. On a semi related note, do you have the same settings for your Acros film simulation on the newer Fujis?
Just got into the Fuji system and your videos have been really informative, particularly this one on your preferred settings. Thank you and looking forward to more of your videos.
i like the way you talk man, such a gentle and humble person, as a photographer i don't see many photographer like you,, i like your review too lotsa positive energy transfred to me,, i just got my Fuji XT-1 and you are my first video that i see for the Fuji review!! keep up the good work man!! cheers :)
Had to go back and watch this again. Decided to set my X-T2 the same way so I can go out and shoot some Acros and Chrome and see if I can rely solely on jpeg output. Hey, another excuse to get out and shoot right? I find myself using the exposure dial a lot. Love that dial.
Another relaxing and informative video Ted. Thanks for sharing your settings. I’ll give them a try. It could set me on a whole new path of photography. Best wishes.
4:35 I love that shot with that flashy light in the middle drawing your eyes to her . A perfect example of, although the the rule of thirds are neglected, you can make an awesome shot. Well done, like it, love it, that's were it's all about.
I have two Fuji cameras. One is the Fuji Finepix S1000fd and the other is a Fuji Finepix S9900W. Both shoot JPEG. I use the black and white settings on both cameras and the results are superb. I have been a lover of black and white photography for years and was looking for a camera that could give me some good results in black and white using JPEG. I am lucky that both my cameras produce what I am looking for.
Hi Ted, Catching up with your videos and loving them. My XT2 arrives in a month. You've inspired me to do much more b&w and street photography. Love the instax printer idea. Thnx again, Ted. You're a treasure.
thank-you! I've had a pro1 w/27mm for 2 years and only recently have I experimented with/b&w jpg. Now I see this video and bam! it really came together for me. I may still play with the settings but right now I'm very happy with the results. Again Thank-you!
Ted, I have been using your settings on both my X-T1 that I'm using a 8-element Asahi, 1.4/50 Takumar and on my X-E1 using the FX 18-55. I'm really pleased with the results! Thanks!
Tad, man, thanks for that! So many systems I tried , then you convinced me to try Fuji one . Wow. My wife looks so pretty in the 35mm lense ;) having now x-t10 and once I tried it, I fell in love in that pictures. My colleagues asked me - man what Are doing with a new system ? why not Nikon, Olympus ... That's why. Your videos are awesome! Thank You for sharing with so many thoughts, experiences concerning Your work. Keep on going with that work - it makes really sense and greetings from Wroclaw
Thanks Ted. Very good advice on settings - I'll play around with them too. You are spot on about Kevin Mullins' work - it was his work and passion that initially inspired me to get Fuji X cameras.
+TheMobileMan Very cool, man - yeah, I never even considered doing wedding photography, but when I saw Kevin's approach and what he was able to capture with these smaller cameras... I'd do a wedding now, for any couples who would want that style of photography for their wedding. To me it's a much more emotional experience to see that kind of photography than a traditionally shot wedding with a lot of poses and standard shots. The style that Kevin shoots in captures actual memories and personalities and moments. And he does a great job at being able to get those shots. Thanks again man!
+Draw with Light Cool, thanks man. Might at least be a place for some to start and then find what works best for them. Having Shadows +2 can really deepen things - might not be for everyone, but I really love those deep shadows! Thanks man!
ha! man! what a friendly and relaxed video! I saw so many before about all kind of gear and photography, but I can't remember one that was so cool in the best sense! I enjoyed it very much. Thank you!
Hi Ted. Thanks for your beautiful images and for the settings you used to make them. Will you be doing an update? That would be nice, because the newer sensor and the filmsim Acros nowedays might have changed your settings. Thanks, Peter
Hey, Greetings from the UK, just slowly migrating to the Fuji from Canon, have the xt10 with the 35, 56 and 16 mm, your videos have been a "Godsend", Keep up the great work....subscribed! Keith
+MrKandh Thanks so much, man! Yeah, I loved my Canon stuff, but really love the whole Fuji system more - just works much better for me. (and I really did love the Canon stuff) You've started off with a good lineup of gear. Be careful - I was originally only going to pickup a body and a couple lenses last year, but ended up with the X-T1, six lenses and even upgraded my X100 to an X100T - so yeah, it's addicting and I'm definitely in the Fuji camp now. Have fun! :)
Very nice Ted! I bet you won't regret. Now my street photography is really well divided. When I know I'm in the mood to take Street portraits I just put the 50 mm on and and I keep it all day long. Same for when I'm looking for wider shorts I just keep the28mm on and I don't even think of changing it. Right now I find myself doing street photography with my 28 mm more than anything else. Great focal length and super sharp. I really like those three focal length the Fuji offers to the Fuji X 100T. I'm happy for you!
+Ted Vieira yes I love it. Still using my Nikon gear but I wanted to have the Fuji for every day use without carrying a bulky beast around. I just have the 18-55 currently, it's so good I'm struggling to decide which lens will best suit me next, as the kit lens pretty much covers most grounds with good aperture all around
im just about to jump from Canon to fuji with the XT10. Heard great things and it's more in my budget than the XT1. I'm heavily considering grabbing the amazing fuji 35mm f2 lens as my starter, but also heard the 18-55mm f2.8-4 kit lens is amazing too. Any thoughts on which one i should grab? Cheers!
+Nathan Baldassero the 18-55 is nice but it's not really for me as f4 at 55mm isn't good enough for what I like to do. If it was a consistent 2.8 then I'd be happier, but I'd rather just have only primes all under f2
Good point, that was actually my concern but figured the great ISO on the camera would soften the blow a little. But I think I'm leaning to all primes as well. Cheers
thanks so much ted for your prompt reply. i also have a canon 580 flash (have only one)....so im not heavily invested in flashes...i also dont mind using the flash in manual. and since im thinking abt getting the xt2, i thought it would b a good idea to get some off camera flash/strobes, when needed. i was looking at the cactus and cheetahstand (godox)... if fujifilm will eventually make the 23mm lens with f2 (the compact version), that would b awesome....that is what i have in mind....by the end of this year....now i have a canon 1d mark ii....which is heavy and outdated....and i think its time to get a newer camera....and so far i like the fuji cameras....especially i read that it renders amazing jpegs (sooc)....which is awesome. thanks again ted.
+Andrew atm Yeah man, you can use that Canon 580 - at least you've already got it. I'll be interested in hearing more about Fuji's flash that should be out soon. I haven't read too much on it - kind of low priority for me at the moment, but it's nice to see they are starting to develop that area. Yeah, I'm looking fwd to seeing the 23f2 lens too! Thanks Andrew, have a great weekend!
Hi Anthony, sorry for the delay, just getting caught up. Since I made this video I've experimented with different settings and will adjust for specific situations. But most of the time will return to these settings. And yeah, I use the same settings for any of the film simulations. Thanks man!
Hey Miguel, thank you very much! Yeah man, for the most part, the settings on my Fuji's rarely change from the settings in this video. Thanks again, Miguel.
+Philip Rice Thanks Phillip, I appreciate that! Yeah, these work for me. Hopefully it might give you a good place to start. Maybe tweak the settings a bit from there to get to what you really like. Thanks again, man!
Thanks a lot Ted. Really great stuff. I was a RAW shooter until recently but then discovered just how good the JPEGs can be. If you can get it right in camera then it's a no brainer. I'm on Pro Neg Hi but I'm sure that will change to Classic Chrome when I upgrade from my X-Pro 1. Your pictures are spot on. Keep up the good work!
Hello Ted, nice videos thanks for sharing, I have the X100T but I'm thinking to get rid of it and move to the XT1.. What do you think? Cheers from Mexico
Hey Christian, thanks very much! Man, if possible I would try and keep the X100T and also get the X-T1. Would that be a possibility? The only reason I suggest that is that, while the X-T1 is a very good camera and would give you the option of switching lenses, the X100T is really an amazing street photography camera or very good for situations where you really need the quiet shooting that the leaf shutter provides. Even though I'm shooting the X-Pro2 most of the time these days, I still really appreciate the shooting experience that the X100T provides. That being said, if you really want to keep to one camera, the X-T1 is a pretty fantastic camera. And it's really about the same size as the X100 series. It would give you faster auto focus speeds which is always a good thing. Also offers weather sealing which is nice, and then of course gives you the option to use different lenses. The X-T2 is coming out later this summer. If you can wait until July or maybe August, that could really work in your favor. The X-T2 will really offer a lot more camera - the 24mp sensor and new processor. That'll be very nice! But even if you don't want to go for that, the X-T1 will probably really come down in price, so you could go for the new X-T2, or really get a good savings on an X-T1 (which will still give you fantastic images and shooting experience). Anyway, hope this helps somewhat. Let me know which way you end up going. Thanks again, Christian!
Thanks for the video; but I'd like to ask you for further explanation:- it's clear to me that there is a lot of confusion over the Tone control settings - both Highlights and Shadows. I'm confused and looking round the forums, I think a lot of other people are confused too. I'd be really grateful for a short, clear explanation of these settings (more detail in highlights => minus setting, blown highlights => plus setting??) thanks
+David Shire Hey David, actually it sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on it. Yeah, you'll still need to adjust your exposure settings accordingly with how you've adjusted the shadows and highlight settings. And actually I'm not always too concerned if I blow out some highlights or loose detail in the shadows. It's on a "per image" basis, but I almost think it sometimes adds to the feel of the image. Thanks man!
Wow, Jordan, very cool - would love to get over there sometime. Yeah man, The X100T (or really any of them, but particularly that latest one) is really such a unique shooting experience. When I first got my original X100 I just really loved how much fun it was to shoot with, but then the image quality, even from the original X100 (12mp sensor) was so cool - very unique - beautiful! Thanks again, man!
Once you get here, I'll be looking forward meeting with you! Indeed, fuji experience is unique and makes one feel very satisfied. The vintage looks of those cameras, you can see how people are stress free from those big "cannons" I'd say. Man, I am taking a bow to Fuji , hat off.
Now I don't own any other digital cameras other than my X-T1 and my X100T. I was happy that all the money from my previous two brands were enough to buy the eight more important lenses for the X-T1 and also the 50mm and the 28mm lens converters for the X-100T. I even had some money left to get two ThinkTank Retrospective 30, one Fuji Instax Mini printer SP1 (I give install pints as part of my service during events and also to strangers - for free - when I'm doing street photography) and a monster Canon Pixus Pro 1 printer (the Japanese version of the Canon Pixma Pro 1 - they have different names for Japanese and american markets but the printer is the same).
+Lome Roger Yeah man, you're set! I love the Instax printer for the reasons you just gave - really makes it a fun experience. And very cool about the Canon printer. A friend has a Canon Pro9500 and he doesn't use it so let's me keep it at my place - I love those prints! How do you like the TCL and WCL for the X100T? I've been considering picking up one or both. I used to love the 23mm focal range, but now I either like to go longer or wider. Let me know how you like using them. Do they effect your DOF? Thanks Lome!
+Ted Vieira Thanks for asking about this Ted! Both WCL and TCL work perfectly. So far, no signs of chromatic aberration or lens vignette whatsoever. The TCL, with its 50mm focal length makes the X100T a very good tool for street portraits or even for portraits during small events when companies hire me to photograph business dinners in very tine restaurants (very common here in Japan). The WCL with its 28mm focal length is also a great toll for the same reason. Both lenses are great when I'm doing street photography for street portraits (50mm) and when I'm shooting in narrow streets so I can get very cool effects by shooting from low angle or even from the hip. It does get in the way when using the OVF however, you can focus and see with no problem. I believe it will be a great addition to your setup. I would like to tell you one more thing. I also use the LensMate thumb grip and a soft release button and it works perfect and also makes the camera even more beautiful. As a case for both X-T1 and X100T I couldn't be satisfied and happier with the Gariz half case with the metal plate at the bottom and the leather straps form the same brand. Its beautiful and functional. Cheers!
+Lome Roger Thanks again, Lome! I think will check both the TCL and WCL out. I'm really loving the 35f2 on the X-T1 and am missing that angle of view when I shoot with the X100T. Think I will order that one this week. Thanks again!
***** On very cool thing I forgot to mention is that somehow the images come out even sharper then with the native 35mm. After I realized that, I did some research and I found some "old" videos of the Fuji Guys and some real life photographers saying the same thing. I'm glad I figured that out before I found the videos because I probably wouldn't believe. Let me make it clear that I am not sponsored by Fuji whatsoever. I wish... I am just a very UNKNOWN photographer based in Japan and I make tons of CENTS with my photography. I'm glad I have a full time job cause my photography only covers my gear... lol
Im hoping for the same thing. although I've heard from Fuji that it won't be possible because the old processor can't handle it. I'll be working on making a LR Acros preset.
+SunriseInTheMidwest Yeah, it looks pretty beautiful. I'm pretty sure it will probably be on the X-T2, just guessing that version will have the new 24.3mp sensor and new processor to handle Acros. Thanks man!
+Stephen Gomez That's a good idea, Stephen. I am pretty excited to see what Acros can give us in-camera. With the JPEGs just getting better and better, and what the EVF delivers, I'm looking forward to doing less and less editing/processing! Thanks Stephen!
Man i love night street photography both color and black and white and i being doing alright but now with your setting in black and white there is a huge different. This is good because you don't have to be shooting and searching to learn. With videos like this one from people like you who share. Mano muy Interesante, muy bueno:) Gracias broo%%% Saludos from Puerto Rico..
+bleuswiffer Yeah man, we're pretty much the same there. I'm imagining that the longer I end up shooting with Fuji I'm hoping to move more towards making minor tweaks and adjustments in-camera so I can just start going with the JPEGs more often - for now the majority, I'm still editing the RAW files. Thanks again, man!
Hey G, yeah, I've heard that there's been an issue with Apple's Photos app. I haven't really used the app itself. I did used to use their more "robust?" program a few years ago, Aperture. It handled the RAW files of the day, but that's when I was shooting with Canon. Since then I've been using Lightroom which does handle the RAF files. Maybe someone else here will have more experience with the Photos app. You might want to think about using a different app for your photography. Several good options out there. As I mentioned, I'm using Lightroom, but I know a lot of Fuji shooters like Capture One. Like I said, I really haven't used the Photos app, but I'm sure one of these other choices would give you a lot more flexibility in your post work. Thanks man.
@@TedVieira Yeah, poor effort from Apple to be honest. I refuse to pay a monthly subscription for apps. When you have Office, Lightroom, Photoshop and 5 other applications at $10Au each it gets a bit much. Pay upfront till new version come out is my preferred way. I down loaded the Fuji app and it does a ok job. Bit memory hungry but keeps all the data for basic touches then save to JPEG to share. Thanks for the reply.
Hi Ted, great video, thanks!. If I may I would like your comments on two issues. First, regarding your xt1 companion, the X100T. Why have you selected that instead of lets say XE2 for more flexibility and use of the several lenses you own? I am struggling with this buying decision since I have an XT1 and several enses, but then a lot of buzz about X100.. Finally, you mention that you go darker in order to keep the ISO down, but that is exactly the contrary of the common "go to right" suggestion for keeping noise down in post. Could you expand on it? Thanks!
Awesome stuff! I love your photography and style. I usually use red filter with highlight +1 and Shadow +1 but I'll check out your settings and experiment. Your right about the JPEG plus RAW though I shot like that for a long time but lately just experimenting with JPEG only and I'm loving the results. I didn't think exposure comp did anything in manual mode? I'll check that out it sounds interesting.
I recently tend to go more street and black and white for personal stuff. I like the way you talk about Fuji gear. You make it sound like a "love" affair.
+Christian Hamélius Very cool, Christian - yeah, I'm doing a lot more of that these days too. And man, it IS a love affair, right!? ;) I'll find myself having to kind of take a step back and think, "Man, why are you so excited about Fuji's alternative lens hood for the 16mm? or Why did you just make a Happy New Year's card photo of all my Fuji bodies and lenses!!??" It's really interesting what Fuji's done with this X series that makes us so excited about photography! Thanks Christian!
I haven't ever shot with an X-Pro1, but basically these would be my goto settings for any of the Fujifilm X series bodies. I mix it up from time to time, but usually always end up back here. Thanks Roy!
Ted Vieira Thanks Ted! I see on your xpro-2 video that these days you use -1 for the highlight settings. This is what I tend to use too (sometimes -2).
Hey Ted have you experience with the 18-135 for traveling? I also switched from the heavy Nikon D800 to Fuji first X 100, loved the IQ, then xe2 and now XT1, and don't regret it at all. I am going to Galápagos Islands in May & been thinking about the all purpose 18_135....your thoughts
+Victor Dellepiane Hey Victor, actually I made a conscious decision when I moved over to Fuji that I would stick to prime lenses, so I don't have any experience with the 18-135, but I've heard pretty good things about that zoom. That's definitely a focal range that can cover just about anything. I don't know if you've already seen this video where "The Angry Photographer" gives a review: th-cam.com/video/teaOIa0QVAw/w-d-xo.html Anyway, sorry I couldn't be of more help. Wow man, Galápagos Islands! Sounds like a great trip! Let me know if you get the lens and how you like it.
Love these videos and your work. Can you clarify what camera & model of camera you are using? And lenses? I also love b&w for street/urban photography.
Very good vid, and great pictures as always. I became a Fuji addict too, and draw great inspiration from you and Mr. Mullins! One question: if you increase the highlights by plus 2, don’t you get overblown highlights occasionally? I know quite a few shooters tune the highlights down by -1 or -2.
Man, if I set the shadows to anything more than -2, they come out crushed as hell. I don't mind a contrasty look, but it seems like Fuji really reaaalllyyy crushes the shadows. How do you avoid that?
Hi Ted, Just love your videos. I recently got myself an XT-10 with an XF18-55mm kit lens and have also bought an XF 35mm F2. Hoping to do some B&W Street work. Do you have any suggestions for me apart from the settings you mentioned in this video to get the kind of night & day pics that you get ?
Hey Russell, thanks man! When I'm shooting street stuff, night or day I usually use auto ISO these days, then I just set the shutter speed and aperture to get the kind of look I want - whether it might be shallow DOF that I'm after, or I need to pay more attention to shutter speed for different kinds of shots. That can all change on a case by case basis, just depending on the kind of shots you're looking to get.
Great vid Ted. When using the OVF on the x100t i have the parallax corrector green box activated, so I'm a bit confused on where the center of the scene is. Is it in the green parallax corrected box? Thank you
+hollernathan Hey, thanks man! Yeah, the OVF can take a bit to get use to. With the Corrected AF Frame on you'll see the solid white box which shows the focus point when shooting further, the dashed white box shows your focus point for close up focusing, but the green box that shows up when you push the shutter halfway, that's your actual focus point. So you can always figure your actual focus point will be somewhere between the two white boxes. Then clicking halfway on the shutter will show you the actual point. I don't use the OVF that much on the X100T or X-Pro2 - have become to spoiled by the EVF, but it is really nice to have that fresh look through the OVF from time to time. Anyway, I know this issue can be a little confusing, but hopefully this helped? Or maybe someone else who uses the OVF more frequently might be able to jump in and add clarity. Thanks very much!
+Andrew atm Hey Andrew, thanks very much! Yeah, I'm still using my Canon 580EXII speedlites. They'll actually work in the hot shoe of the X-T1, but no TTL. Which is fine with me - I like manual flash better. But I use them on Cactus transceivers (triggers) for off-camera flash. The Cactus triggers are pretty cheap and they work great for the Fuji system and whatever flashes you were using from your Nikon or Canon stuff. Do you have any other flashes now?
+Michael Czahur Hey Michael, for street shooting at night, I'll still try to shoot where there is good available light, either from a streetlight or stoplights, or the neon stuff here in vegas, or security lights, etc... so that my focus point is still pretty well lit and contrasty. So I can use AF for that. If it's a situation where I'll be walking through crowds, like on Freemont Street, I can always prefocus for a certain distance and get some shots that way, as AF might have a harder time if I just need to grab a quick "in-the-moment" shot. I'm going to try and get out to do some night street shooting this week. Maybe I can make a video for that. Thanks Michael!
Hey Ted, not sure why I never watched this before, but it raises an interesting question for me. I have the original X100, and I use my X-T1 daily. Would you say it's worth selling the X100 and buying the X100T instead? Thanks
Ted. Great videos. Im old school from the days of pentax k1000, minolta x700's etc so to have purchased the xt1 last summer was just great. I sold all my canon 40D, 5D mk ii etc kit and havent looked back. Im with you on everything and im just glad the myth of bigger is better has been exposed with the fuji x series. Im just about to purchase the 35mm f2 to compliment the 23 and 56. 2 questions please. 1. The wedding photographer you rated -were you stating he shoots jpeg only now? 2. What make trigger/receiver do you recommend for xt1 (seems flash is the weakness to fuji system at present) Regards and thank you so much. Craig
+Craig Baron Hey, thanks very much, Craig! Yeah, Kevin Mullins - very inspiring work. The interviews in which I've heard Kevin talk about this issue, he talks about how the bulk of the images he'll give the customers come from the JPEGs. He mentions that if the light is a little sketchy he's shoot FINE + RAW just in case. If you haven't seen his work, you really ought to check it out. Here's his wedding site (beautiful stuff!) www.kevinmullinsphotography.co.uk/ I'm shooting FINE+RAW and a lot of the time, if the photo is for a blog post or I can't see anything I need to do to improve the image, I'll use the JPEG. For most of my portrait work and street photography I will still edit the RAW files a lot of the time. Man, you will LOVE the 35f2!! Have fun with that! Thanks Craig!
Thanks for this, very helpful. One question: The green filter seems like an unusual choice. What's your reason for that particular setting? Why green, not red?
+Johannes Labusch Thanks very much, Johannes! Yeah, I know what you mean. I know red would probably be a more obvious choice - lighten skin tones, etc... For some reason I just really like the way the tones appear and the contrast of the green filter. Just one of those things where you take a shot with each of the filters and go, "Oh cool, I like that one!" :) Thanks again, Johannes!
+Ted Vieira A good reminder that "the rules" are made to be broken. Thanks, Ted. I'll be sure to try it on some of my shots. One of the many great things about RAW, you can see the difference after the fact.
+Johannes Labusch Yeah, that is one of the cool things about RAW! Do you apply any of the film simulations to your RAW files in Lightroom? (if you use LR) I'll usually add Classic Chrome regardless of whether or not I'm processing as color OR black and white. It gives those nice dark tones to the shadows that I really like.
We use very similar setting except for the variations I use in my custom settings. My C1, C2, C3 and C4 are dedicated to Classic Chrome. C5, C6, and C7 are dedicated to B&W. I setup C1 to C4 going from deeper shadows and strong color (starting with C1) to less contrast, less shadows and more desaturated colours (ending with C4). For the B&W group the idea is the same however, I use yellow, green and red filters for each one. I keep the strongest, more contrasty and more dramatic settings on C1 and C7 because it makes easy and fast when I need to switch from my favorite color and B&W film simulation. This way I just need to go one step back or forward with the selector. I'm very confident and relaxed with the auto ISO and WB. I keep the DR on 100. I also got a set of three Nissin i40 flash for Fuji (native TTL) but I find myself not using much since the cameras handle low light with mastery.
+Lome Roger Wow, nice setup! I can see how that could make things very quick to change your settings in one place - nice. How do you like the flash? I'm using my Canon 580EXIIs, but just for off-camera flash, and I shoot manual flash anyway, but there are times with it can be handy to have TTL.
Hi Ted! I sold my Canon heard but I kept my Canon 580EXIIs however I felt attracted to the "little" Nissan i40 because of its size as well as for the little constant list that the flash has. In reality the light is meant to be a video light and I was wondering if it could use it as a constant light, at least for positioning the shadows and than shoot with the flash bulb... I decided to give it a try and guess what!? It worked much better than I expected. In studio and on locations it is perfect cause I can kill the ambient light by closing my aperture without worrying about the precise position of my shadows and highlights. In this case, I don't even need to use the OVF to be able to see and focus. I keep using the EVF to see how my exposure and effect will be. If I really need more power for full body shots I use the Canon setup. When I use the i40s with my X100T I bring only one (usually for street portraits) and to use it off camera I use the FlashQ transmitter and receiver setup. It is very very tiny, inexpensive and extremely functional. As a conclusion, the Nissan i40 in conjunction with the FlashQ transmitter and receivers is a very good setup for my work.
+Ted Vieira Hi Ted. The I40 is a very nice flash but when it comes to the Fuji X cameras compared to the version for Nikon and Canon and Sony, important features are missing. Zoom control, wireless Ttl, etc. are not available on the Fuji version.
Ted Viera Hey Ted! You are absolutely spot on about Kevin Mullens too. He has this great ability of capturing the moment rather that worrying too much about settings ! Thanks for letting us know about Kevin.
Hey, Ted. Have a question for you. Using your settings above, especially for B&W, do you usually/never go in during post processing and reset your White and Black points to get maximum pop across the range or is that just not generally necessary with them? When I use Kevin's settings (Highlights: -1) I find I'm not touching the right side of the histogram. Even with your settings (Highlights: +2) the histogram on my X70 shows I'm not even close to the righthand side. On some of my shots I've reset the White and Black points, but that (of course) changes the look of the pic. Just curious what your thoughts, practice, and recommendations are on this. If it matters, I'm looking for crisp, high contrast B&W shots with "white" whites and dark, deep blacks. Thanks.
+Peter Shelly Yeah Peter, I'll often leave an image "as shot" if I really like it, but most of the time I'll end up doing a little tweaking. When you're shooting do you do any EXP Compensation? If the shot is over or under exposed when shot, of course that could effect the histogram. I'm not as concerned about the histogram as I am just the visual of the image. I'll usually make all adjustments based on what I'm seeing in the image. I'll usually try to push the highs up and the blacks down as low as I can without going too far. Then I might look at the histogram just for verification. And I'm printing with the Canon Pro9500 MK II and printing from lightroom I haven't had any issues. Thanks Peter.
+Ted Vieira Thanks, Ted, for the info. It always helps me to know how someone else processes their work. Thanks for taking the time to fill me in. As for doing EXP compensation, I usually do with my HS50exr through the EVF, but with my new X70 I'm having a heck of a time just seeing LiveView on a sunny day, much less being able to see that little histogram or make out many details on the screen :-) I better start paying more attention to that from now on. Good shooting!
Ted! Thanks for sharing your preferred jpeg settings. I am still formulating my thoughts on these and trying to understand how they behave under different conditions. I'm big on the B+G simulation for portraits as well. I like the idea of going out and trying more night street photography (thanks for the inspiration!), although I gotta tell ya, Vancouver, BC is not nearly as interesting at night as LA or New York. Something that might interest you or your viewers are these free presets for the Capture One editing software to match the Fuji Film Simulations. Just found these today: www.fujirumors.com/free-capture-one-pro-8-fujifilm-film-simulations-to-download/ I haven't tried these yet, but passing them along anyway. I think they are just built in for Lightroom. Would be interested to know if you tried them on your raw files there. Also, on jpeg settings. I think it's interesting how different photographers are working with the simulations. Here are a few links from different photogs on this topic in case it's useful for you or your viewers: Damien Lovegrove only uses one simulation: www.prophotonut.com/2015/06/02/fuji-x-t1-settings/ Jason Oertel offers presets for different applications: blog.jaysonoertel.com/2015/02/25/here-are-my-custom-menu-settings-for-my-fuji-x-t1/ Clifton Beard: cliftonbeard.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/12/fuji-x-t1-custom-settings
+ubercurious Hey, thanks very much for sharing! How do you like working with Capture One? I'm happy with LR but am always interested in hearing from others. I almost went to Capture One after Apple pulled the plug on Aperture, but I already had a copy of LR so went with that. I'll definitely check out the other guys take on the simulations. Thanks I really appreciate the info!
***** I really like the UI on Capture One and what it makes possible on skin tones (it's particularly great here). Phase One has created some great colour adjustment tools in C1 that are very specific to skin tones and the algorithms seem to quite sophisticated. I sense that software package hasn't had as much time to develop as Lightroom, so it's not as feature rich, nor does it support as wide an array of plug-ins. But for X-Trans raw converstion, it's great. Here's one of he articles I used to make my decision about Fuji raw files conversion - www.fujivsfuji.com/best-xtrans-raw-converter/
Ted you have to tell me .. does Fuji allow exposure compensation for M mode with auto ISO? My Canon 5dMk3 doesn't and as far as i know only 1DX in canon does. Do all Fuji cameras allow this or only from a certain firmware version? Its my biggest pet peeve about my Canon.
+GravityHazard thats what the exposure comp dial is for, and i believe every fuji has it. I have a 5d3 as well, and like you it drives me mental, not having exposure comp with auto iso in manual. Im leaning towards selling my 5d3, but it has been so trusty for so long. I think Ill wait until the X-T2, hopefully they add the joystick from the X-pro2 that I've grown so accustomed to on my 5d
+weareyesyesyes Yeah, the 5DmkIII is awesome. I heard somewhere recently that they were expecting that Canon might be releasing the Mark IV later this year. That's always hard to predict though - and I'm out of that system now. Yeah, you might as well wait for the X-T2. Most seem to think that it will have everything (except the hybrid VF) that the X-Pro2 upgrade gave that body, plus maybe more? I don't know, everyone's just kind of guessing right now. But should be pretty exciting!
+Dave Kelly Hey Dave, thanks man. Yeah, it was a simple process of just trying each filter and seeing which one I liked best for general shooting. I might change it based on the scene from time to time, but in general I just preferred the look of the green filter. Seemed to bring the shadows down even a bit lower, added more contrast. At least to my perception. So although I've shown my settings in this video, it's really more about what you prefer and what works best for your style. Thanks again, Dave!
+Michael Czahur Oh man, you're right, I just looked on B&H and there are some fantastic prices there. Yeah, this would be a great time to get that 16mm! The 56f1.2 is only $799, and good price on the 90mm too... Very tempting. I just ordered the TCL for the X100T this morning but unfortunately it's not on sale. Thanks Michael, let me know if you get the 16!
+Robert van Heumen Hey Robert, thanks very much, man! Yeah, it just arrived yesterday. I'm hoping I can get out late tonight to do a little street shooting with it. How do you like it?
+pat dinco Hey Pat, in low light the AF speed of my 5DmkII was a bit faster, but not so much that it really makes it an issue with the X-T1. And with the new sensor and processor that was introduced with the X-Pro2, Fuji definitely seems to be closing that gap. With the work I've done in low light situations, I'm still much happier shooting with my X-T1 than with my Canon. If you're a sports shooter or just someone who really needs that kind of performance, a mid to high-end DSLR might still give you more of what you need. But I haven't shot with the X-Pro2 yet, so that will be interesting. Thanks Pat!
+Ted Vieira thanks! As you know I've been commenting on your vids asking questions. I appreciate the replies. Been trying to figure out the next camera I want since its been 6 years and I think my canon rebel needs to retire. Thanks again
+pat dinco Very cool, Pat, thanks very much! Yeah, if you do decide to move to Fuji, as a previous Canon shooter who recently made the switch, I think you'll be pretty happy. There's always an adjustment period, but mine was brief and am happier with Fuji the longer I shoot with that system. :)
+Ted Vieira One more thing Ted. When you have +1 o +2 (like Kevin Mullins) don't you see some weird artifacts on the edges, like people glasses or fine lines get distorted when you watch at 100% I know if you print or watch the full image you cannot see any of those artifacts.
+Juan Kis Hey Juan, I haven't noticed any issues. I have to admit though I'm not really a pixel peeper and often don't get in that close for a look. Things like that might get by me now and then. Now these in camera settings only effect the JPEGs and if I print something, or if it's a photo for a client, so far I've always used the RAW files. I'll have to check that out.
Thanks very much, David! Yeah man, I use the same adjustments for everything. I shoot in b&w mostly, but if I do shoot in color, I just change the film simulation, but leave the shadow, highlight and sharpening settings the same. Thanks again, man!
Ted, you should be doing a late night jazz show on radio. You got the voice man.
Thanks man :)
Oh yeah, please do so!!!!
+Lome Roger Wow man, that's a great testimony for Fuji! I feel the same way. Thank you very much, I really appreciate it!
+Chronos5618 X-T10 - powerful camera!! Thanks very much, man, I appreciate it!
Dude you're a legend, keep the videos coming.
+splootan You're very cool, man, thanks very much!
Love this guy! No nonsense, no BS, pure passion and warmth.
Short and sweet. Learned more of what I wanted to know from this than many other long, drawn-out videos. Thanks!
+Original Jam Tracks Thank you very much! Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see more info on for Fuji and I'll do what I can. :)
i like the way you talk man, such a gentle and humble person, as a photographer i don't see many photographer like you,, i like your review too lotsa positive energy transfred to me,, i just got my Fuji XT-1 and you are my first video that i see for the Fuji review!! keep up the good work man!! cheers :)
+Rendy Muntu Hey Rendy, thank you so much! That means a lot! Yeah man, the X-T1 is awesome - really fantastic camera! Have fun with that! :)
Hi Ted, just looked back at your X-T1 clip, I own one, I love it, just wanted to say love your site 😊
+RS Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Ted I know its two years since you made this but I just found it.I LOVE LOVE LOVE my xt1 And you have given me some ideas Thanks man
Tad, man, thanks for that!
Great video so true on Fuji jpeg’sI use the Fuji xe1 &xe2s I love 16 megapixel sensors on Fuji same as XPRO1 great images
Great video, Ted. Thanks for your insights and thoughts on your camera settings!
Thank you!
+Adrian W. Hey Adrian, thank you very much, I really appreciate that! Thanks!
Hi Ted. Thanks for your beautiful images and for the settings you used to make them. Will you be doing an update? That would be nice, because the newer sensor and the filmsim Acros nowedays might have changed your settings. Thanks, Peter
I barely ever comment on videos. But I have to say as a fellow Fuji X-Shooter I love your work! Keep it up!!!
+Yousif Hanna Oh man, that means a lot, thank you very much, Yousif!
Have fun! :)
Seen so many videos on this topic but loving this one! Very helpful Ted!
+Lome Roger Yeah, I'm sure it won't be long before I order the WCL. :) Thanks again, Lome!
+2 high / +2 shadows, man thats pretty gutsy! Really narrowing the dynamic range. I'll try it out tomorrow!
Just wanted to say I finally got my XT1 and jumped over to Fuji after watching yours and some others videos :)
Oh man, congratulations!! That is sweet! I love the X-T1 - beautiful, fun to shoot with, and man, the image quality! What lens(es) did are you using?
For the settings in the discription do you use those with classic chrome as well?
Hi Anthony, sorry for the delay, just getting caught up. Since I made this video I've experimented with different settings and will adjust for specific situations. But most of the time will return to these settings. And yeah, I use the same settings for any of the film simulations. Thanks man!
Great video! Awesome photography Ted! Liked & subbed! Do you still use the same settings in 2020?
Hey Miguel, thank you very much! Yeah man, for the most part, the settings on my Fuji's rarely change from the settings in this video. Thanks again, Miguel.
Excellent tutorial Ted - I'm looking forward to trying out your settings.
+Philip Rice Thanks Phillip, I appreciate that! Yeah, these work for me. Hopefully it might give you a good place to start. Maybe tweak the settings a bit from there to get to what you really like. Thanks again, man!
Thanks! Great video! Tons of great hands on tips for x-t1 users in your vids!
+Catap I really appreciate, thanks so much!
I really like your black & whites and I see why you like the jpegs.
+villegas24 Thanks so much! I love the quality of the JPEGs the Fujis are capable of!
Thanks for the great video !!! If you could afford to buy only one of them, which one would you get ??? Thanks again !!!
By the way, it's 2:35 AM here in Japan and I am out on the streets give me some night shots... Loving it!
+Lome Roger Sweet! Man, I love shooting at that time! Have fun!
Do you use classic chrome? If so, what settings do you prefer?
Ted, you're right!!! It's giving me the punch and it looks beautiful. You're the man!
Thanks for the video; but I'd like to ask you for further explanation:-
it's clear to me that there is a lot of confusion over the Tone control settings - both Highlights and Shadows.
I'm confused and looking round the forums, I think a lot of other people are confused too.
I'd be really grateful for a short, clear explanation of these settings
(more detail in highlights => minus setting, blown highlights => plus setting??)
thanks
+David Shire Hey David, actually it sounds like you've got a pretty good handle on it. Yeah, you'll still need to adjust your exposure settings accordingly with how you've adjusted the shadows and highlight settings. And actually I'm not always too concerned if I blow out some highlights or loose detail in the shadows. It's on a "per image" basis, but I almost think it sometimes adds to the feel of the image. Thanks man!
You are a photography mentor! If there was a 1Mill like button I'd have definitely clicked it! Thanks man!
Thank you very much, Juneid, very cool! I appreciate that!
Greetings from Jordan, I have moved from Canon to the X100T as a start and the quality is blowing me away!
New subscriber, I was totally drawn to your style of making videos. Getting back into film, but just purchased a X100s. Keep up the good work.
I'm glad I have a full time job cause my photography only covers my gear... lol
+Lome Roger Hey Lome, very cool - I ordered one yesterday (TCL). Looking forward to checking it out. Thanks again for the info, man!
Since you aren't going to be getting the X-Pro2, I hope the Acros preset comes to the X100T or X-T1 so we can see how well you do with it.
+Stephen Gomez There is an Acros preset on Silver Efex pro on Nik Software which is now free to download. www.google.com/nikcollection/
+The Chromes Have you had the chance to compare the Silver Efex version to the jpeg emulation? I'm curious to see how they compare.
I allways use RaW+ Jpeg and sometimes...I use the unedited Jpeg files. But mostly I edit the Raw and use them in anyway.
The Photos app on Mac don't recognise .RAF files from Fuji.
Any tips?
Any tips on the Fujifilm x-t1 with the 27mm 2.8 the images being not razor sharp? Might be the lens?
Hi Ted, great video, thanks!. If I may I would like your comments on two issues. First, regarding your xt1 companion, the X100T. Why have you selected that instead of lets say XE2 for more flexibility and use of the several lenses you own? I am struggling with this buying decision since I have an XT1 and several enses, but then a lot of buzz about X100.. Finally, you mention that you go darker in order to keep the ISO down, but that is exactly the contrary of the common "go to right" suggestion for keeping noise down in post. Could you expand on it? Thanks!
3:54 "Waaoooow", 4:05 "Maaaaan", I love it! Keep up the good reviews, like your voice and character. (Greetings from Germany)
Ha! Thanks very much, I really appreciate it!
Thanks for those tips. Your BW settings are great!
+Christian Hamélius Thanks very much, Christian! What kind of shooting are you doing?
+Ted Vieira plus: it's awesome performance and image quality in a compact body.
Great video! I was wondering if you also use(d) these settings for the Xpro 1?
I don't know if you've already seen this video where "The Angry Photographer" gives a review: th-cam.com/video/teaOIa0QVAw/w-d-xo.html
Anyway, sorry I couldn't be of more help. Wow man, Galápagos Islands! Sounds like a great trip! Let me know if you get the lens and how you like it.
Love these videos and your work. Can you clarify what camera & model of camera you are using? And lenses?
I also love b&w for street/urban photography.
Hey Ted...Do you now take 2 or 3 times better picture with the new Fuji Cameras that you own now in the late 2017 ?
thanks for sharing your settings. did you also push +2 higlights/shadows in BW Film Simulation?
+Ben Biedenkopf Yeah, I use the same shadow, highlight and sharpness settings for both black and white. Thanks Ben!
Thanks for this video. What are your settings for classic chrome?
Thanks very much!
thanks for the video ted. i'm looking forward for the xt2....do u mind sharing what flash/strobe are u using with your xt1?
thanks so much.
Hey Ted got a question for you when Street shooting at Night, how do you set your focus area and your metering thanks
+Ted Vieira thanks Ted. Always appreciate your responses.
loving your videos, man.
Thanks very much, man!
Hey Ted, not sure why I never watched this before, but it raises an interesting question for me. I have the original X100, and I use my X-T1 daily. Would you say it's worth selling the X100 and buying the X100T instead? Thanks
Went from Canon to Fuji as well. Man these JPEGS are incredible. What settings do you use for color? the same as B&W? thanks!
Great videos you have, it would be nice to see more shots while listening. Thank you for sharing
+Farouk Cherchali Thanks very much, Farouk! Yeah, that's not a bad idea about the photos. Thanks again!
By the way Ted the print was a 16x24
my X100F won't let me choose DR400, though it has that option in the menu (but not from the Q key). can anything be done?
2. What make trigger/receiver do you recommend for xt1 (seems flash is the weakness to fuji system at present)
Regards and thank you so much.
Here's his wedding site (beautiful stuff!)
www.kevinmullinsphotography.co.uk/
I'm shooting FINE+RAW and a lot of the time, if the photo is for a blog post or I can't see anything I need to do to improve the image, I'll use the JPEG. For most of my portrait work and street photography I will still edit the RAW files a lot of the time.
Man, you will LOVE the 35f2!! Have fun with that! Thanks Craig!
B/W pictures is the soul moment of time.
+Lome Roger Hey Lome, thanks very much man, you've peaked my curiosity on the Nissan. I might have to give that a try. Thanks man!
+Ted Vieira Hi Ted. The I40 is a very nice flash but when it comes to the Fuji X cameras compared to the version for Nikon and Canon and Sony, important features are missing. Zoom control, wireless Ttl, etc. are not available on the Fuji version.
+ELLIOT STERN Oh, that's good to know, thanks for the heads-up, Elliot!
Can the B & W settings mentioned in this video be used to get good colour pics as well ?
Hey Russell, yeah, I use these settings whether I'm shooting in b&w or color - still gives me the look to the image that I like.
Ted Viera
Hey Ted! You are absolutely spot on about Kevin Mullens too. He has this great ability of capturing the moment rather that worrying too much about settings ! Thanks for letting us know about Kevin.
Great videos, love my x-t10.
+Mercsss111 Thanks very much! Yeah, X-T10 - powerful camera!
Awesome work. Glad I found your channel.
+Carrie Ann Thanks so much Carrie Ann, I appreciate that very much! :)
+Peter Shelly Yeah Peter, my eyes aren't so great so I still need a viewfinder most of the time. Thanks again, man. :)
Just found these today:
www.fujirumors.com/free-capture-one-pro-8-fujifilm-film-simulations-to-download/
I haven't tried these yet, but passing them along anyway. I think they are just built in for Lightroom. Would be interested to know if you tried them on your raw files there.
Also, on jpeg settings. I think it's interesting how different photographers are working with the simulations. Here are a few links from different photogs on this topic in case it's useful for you or your viewers:
Damien Lovegrove only uses one simulation:

Jason Oertel offers presets for different applications:

+GravityHazard Yeah, +weareyesyesyes is correct. I can shoot my Fuji's in full manual mode and do exp comp with auto ISO.
+weareyesyesyes +Ted Vieira Thanks for the insight.. the Fuji system is very tempting especially now with the X-Pro 2
+GravityHazard Just get it man! ;) Have a great weekend!
Ted, thanks for the video. Can I ask why a green filter rather than red or yellow for b&w?
+Dave Kelly Hey Dave, thanks man. Yeah, it was a simple process of just trying each filter and seeing which one I liked best for general shooting. I might change it based on the scene from time to time, but in general I just preferred the look of the green filter. Seemed to bring the shadows down even a bit lower, added more contrast. At least to my perception. So although I've shown my settings in this video, it's really more about what you prefer and what works best for your style. Thanks again, Dave!
Hey Ted. Big sale on Fujifilm lenses and cameras. I get my gear at B&H. I see a 16mm f1.4 in my near future.
Hello Ted, great video as always. I have the TCL also for my Fuji x-100t. Let me know your fidings about it. Cheers, Robert
+Robert van Heumen Hey Robert, thanks very much, man! Yeah, it just arrived yesterday. I'm hoping I can get out late tonight to do a little street shooting with it. How do you like it?
Ted, in terms of low light conditions, how's the af speed compared to your previous cameras?
Thank you Ted! Great video as always! Thanks for sharing!
+Juan Kis Thanks very much, Juan!
Thanks for the great video!! Just wondering if you use the same settings for classic chrome as you showed for b&w?
Thanks very much, David! Yeah man, I use the same adjustments for everything. I shoot in b&w mostly, but if I do shoot in color, I just change the film simulation, but leave the shadow, highlight and sharpening settings the same. Thanks again, man!
