I also played Galaxy 2 before 1. When I eventually bought the first game my brother made fun of me because he said and I quote “it’s literally the exact same game”. This coming from my brother who buys the new NBA basketball games they make every year💀
yea lol that's what i've noticed about sports game fans. They like to group other games together (especially platformers) as being 'the same thing'. I don't know whether it's because they only play the same thing over and over, or they say that to help justify to themselves what they're buying. I mean hell I bought fifa for a decade straight at some stage looking back im pretty disappointed 😂
i wouldn't rank it above the first as the first started the 2 part franchise that made so many of our childhoods, really they are just two different things, incomparable in my eyes
I don't think any of these levels are hard in general besides the Perfect Run (obviously) They're hard relative to Mario games, but as a whole, none of them are too bad They're all capable of being completed first try or in 2 or 3 tries at most (besides motion control goofiness)
I've seen lots of people voice that opinion. And while I respect that, I've just gotta disagree. Maybe I'm biased, seeing how I grew up with the first game and not the second, but hear me out: 1.) The level design, while great, doesn't live up to the first in my opinion. Don't get me wrong - Galaxy 2 still has some top-notch level design, and none of them are bad. But compare, say, Shiverburn Galaxy to Freezeflame Galaxy. While they're very similar, Freezeflame has much more fleshed-out maps and exploration while Shiverburn is very linear. Some of the levels feel like asset dumps, such as Space Storm's second mission, which feels like they just took Buoy Base Galaxy, removed the water, and made everything faster. I still really like that mission though. 2.) The atmosphere. If you take any Super Mario Galaxy 1 level, chances are the skybox will be a dark starry sky and the music will be a synth-filled calming melody. Take any Super Mario Galaxy 2 level, however, and the skybox is probably cloudy blue with a cheerful/intense orchestral soundtrack. And while Galaxy 2 has some gems with music, and I wouldn't call any of the music bad, I personally favor the original much better. 3.) The pacing. People complained about Galaxy 1's pacing, and I see no reason why. I really liked the detail of the levels, returning to each galaxy three times meant that naturally the levels were bigger. Each level also had aspects from different missions added in as detail, like how Space Junk Galaxy's first mission still loads some planets from the second mission. It really feels like we get to explore more of the same galaxy, whereas in the second game you got ONE mission most of the time, with ONE secret and ONE comet. While it's faster paced, I don't like it nearly as much. 4.) The comets. Most of them feel...sub-par. Not to mention the Comet Medals, which I really dislike. Like, collecting a medallion suddenly allows a comet to fly by the galaxy? Galaxy 1 had a few hand-picked levels to have comets, and they meshed well with the level. Galaxy 2, on the other hand, has EVERY level have a comet, and most of them are speedy/purple coin comets, which just feels like a lazy/hasty decision. 5.) The green stars. They're a good concept, bonus hidden stars, and I feel like if executed better they could have been a genuinely neat addition to the game. Unfortunately, Nintendo decided to have 1 green star per normal star in the game, leading to the mess that are the green stars today. Most of them are hidden in really lazy spots. It feels like the developers were running out of time to make the game longer before the deadline and just said "screw it" and threw in the green stars. If there was 1 star per galaxy hidden in actually fun to find spots, I feel like they'd be much better. However, I'm not in any way saying Galaxy 2 is a bad game. It's still one of the greatest 3D Mario platformers of all time. And as I heard someone else put it, it's still just more Mario Galaxy.
@@dhu2056 TH-cam comments are glitching out so sorry if you've seen this already: I prefer the Luigi stars from the first game, actually, because at least they tried to spice up gameplay with Luigi's movement quirks and harder Cosmic Comet races. Plus, nothing important gameplay-wise is locked behind getting 120 stars as Luigi (Grand Finale Galaxy isn't really an actual level), whereas Grandmaster Galaxy is locked behind the Green Stars. Super Mario Galaxy was a joy to 100% complete. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a joy up until the Green Stars to 100% complete. At least they spiced up the gameplay with Luigi's movement schemes (slippery, fast, high jumps, drowns faster) and also changed the Cosmic Comets to be MUCH harder. Plus, you get to replay the entire really fun game. Nothing's locked behind getting everything as Luigi as well, except for Grand Finale Galaxy which doesn't offer much gameplay-wise. The GREEN STARS feel like a chore to collect, and are needed to access Grandmaster Galaxy, a HUGE part of the game."
bro idk how i didnt know about this either, I think I accidentally dodged it once but got stressed and jumped when the next one launched and hit my head on it bruh, beat it a few days later though 👍
Another thing that makes Luigi's purple coins more difficult in 2 is that in 1, there's way more than 100 coins on the map so you can grab whichever ones are more convenient. However in 2, there are exactly 100 coins. That plus the more difficult hazards and clones makes it significantly harder 💀
So funny thing about that upside dizzy burn galaxy... If you head down and right or left and shoot them all straight up, its way WAY easier because the fireballs pierce
I got my Wii back on Christmas 2010 and it was a bundle with Wii Sports, Sports Resort AND Galaxy 2, it was my first ever console and the hours I invested in Galaxy 2 over the years its surprising, after 14 years I still haven't got The Perfect Run bc I dont play the wii that much anymore and skill issues ig, but only dream is to 100% the game and get to see a Galaxy 3 coming out one day (I've got adicted to copium over the years)

The perfect run was literally too hard for my young self, like a month ago I remembered that I still had to do it so after like 10 years I belated it after an hour of attempts
Fun fact: You can delete the cosmic clones in flip out galaxy. There's enough coins from enemies and one laying around so that you can clear them before the second checkpoint.
I can totally see how doing the boss rush without playing Galaxy 1 would be really hard, especially bouldergeist, bc you'd have never seen bomb boos before
to me a lot of the missions in Galaxy 2 feel a lot easier than in the original SMG(especially all the prankster comets that are timed, a lot of the missions that are timed in this game goes away after completing the objective, in the original SMG you are still timed to get the star, and in galaxy 2 even Prankster comets have checkpoints, in the the original no check points ever), with the exceptions with the Grandmaster Galaxy missions like the Ultimate Test and The Perfect Run.
Luigi’s purple coin chaos only took me 3 attempts and I’ll always be impressed with myself for that cause I had really high expectations for it when I first had heard about it

Unlike the first Super Mario Galaxy, I have never replayed #2 since it was new. I got every star with Mario and all but 2 with Luigi, and I can't remember what they're called, just that they were "the final two". The Perfect Run looks familiar, that might have been one of them. I'm pretty relentless with this kind of game; usually by the time I'm able to grab a difficult star, it's become not that difficult anymore. So the fact that I gave up on those last two.... Oof.
Luigi's Purple Coin Chaos is easier for me than in the first game, and even feels easier, and also the timer goes away as always after completing the objective. I played the original Galaxy before playing the 2nd game
Haven’t watched the video yet, TOTALLY wonder what the hardest one will be, it DEFINITELY ISNT completely obvious. Edit: great list, I’d put #8 at #10 as it’s easier if you have a route and don’t just run aimlessly. Id also move #3 up a bit as it’s easy if you quickly get high up, and last I’d fit in the chimp challenge in slimy springs galaxy somewhere.
The Perfect Run has another even harder star in it. Because it's higher up than the first star. You have to do all that stuff and have I think one or two Cloud spins left
I played 2nd game before 1st and I completed both 100%. What I don't like in 1st game is that you need to play some levels 7 times for different stars but some have just 1 or 2 stars and that's it. Also purple coin thing is quite challenging. In 2nd game I think that Grandmaster galaxy is the only one level that made me angry. But in the end I managed to beat it all
Really? That's what I liked about the first game - the fleshed out levels. I really disliked how in the second game you really only visited a galaxy for 1 main mission, then a secret star, then a comet, then 3 random green stars. Excluding green stars, that's only 3 main stars to grab, as compared to the first game's 6 or 7. The bonus 1 star stages were also really fun - small little mini levels that only held 1 mission. And while the second game did technically have those, they of course had to shove a comet and 2 green stars in with the mix.
Luigi's purple coins is _much_ easier in galaxy 2, they're not laid out the same, and the yellow platforms flip forever in galaxy 1 once you step on them. Also, if you're "gonna lose and just have to accept it" in flipsville purple coins, that's not rng, that's the player's own fault. It's nothing wrong with the level if you're too slow to keep up with a cycle, they just wanted to make it tight. But yeah trash cleanup for Gearmos sucks in both games. Also the motion controls and ball levels are not bad at all, I will fight anyone and everyone about this.
@@Moss_Dude i think the opposite luigi's purple coin chaos is much easier than the original Luigi's Purple Coins, despite the fact i beat both missions in just one or two tries.
