- These are HIGHLIGHTS from Bob's unscripted response to the scandalous expose about him on ABC's Prime Time Live. Bob rushed to his studio and immediately used his hour-long Success N' Life timeslot the following day to air this unscripted rebuttal. These highlights are from the replay of the rebuttal that was shown to Bob's Word of Faith congregation during Bob's Sunday morning service a few days later, which is why you can hear audience reaction in the background. That is Bob's own congregation reacting as they watch it on a large screen in front of the church.
I actually worked for this guy. Every Sunday he and Maria would drive up to the storefront church - he is his $90,000 Land Rover, and Maria in her $230,000 Bentley - and he would tell the congregation - mostly poor black women - that if they didn't tithe, they were "robbing God".

Capillaries in his brain swelled because of dried ink causing two strokes? I was a printer for 25 years and guarantee I got more ink directly on my hands than he did. The risk I took was with the chemical wash for cleaning printing rollers, not from handling paper, printed or not. Dried ink I never heard of any risk.

If you listen carefully, he is actually saying "capyoularries" which are the little Jesus nodes found in the bloodstream. Basically where Lucas got the idea for midichlorians. As he prayed over taller and taller stacks of requests, Bob's capyoularries swelled with the power of the Holy Spirit enough to cause the occlusions he's referring to. His misstep was prattling on about the chemicals, which have nothing to do with it.
Boy ABC's expose on Tilton REALLY fired him up. They definitely hit a nerve. I've NEVER seen him this worked up and mad. He is beside himself.

Space that could be used to set up community centers, playgrounds, gardens, work training centers, and so on. Instead these monstrous buildings are used for laser light shows and d-bags with goatees and wireless microphones mincing around onstage feeding their giant egos and collecting the loot of the stupid and weak.

I have to admit he's a pretty good speaker. Almost made me think the TV station stole those cards and stuck them in the trash.
Actually as it turns out, some of the cards found in the trash were indeed taken from point A and placed at point B by people working for the network. It was a very complicated case and lawsuits dragged on for years. I researched it all at one point with the idea of writing a book about it, but it just gives me a huge headache.

I remeber him on TV when I was young....he used to pile the "prayer cloths" onto a six-sided (I think) altar piece in the studio, throw himself on it, and basically semi-convulse while blathering in "tongues"! I actually called his prayer line once as a teenager. I was actually on LSD at the time (this was some 25 yrs. ago) and told her I had killed someone. She asked me to "pray with [her] now", and had I "told anyone". I said no, but needed more help than this. I was "calling the Jews now".
And oh...love the taped audience laugher in the background. Like a laugh track from a sitcom.

That's a heartbreaking story. I had never connected the "I'm gonna win the lottery" mentality with the "I'm gonna win the spiritual lottery through this TV preacher" mentality, but it's basically the same thing. Wow. It makes me sad to think of how many parents wasted money on playing the lottery or sending money to religious hucksters, money that was needed to properly care for their children.

I worked for three years in a hotel that was across the highway from Tilton's church in Farmer's Branch (north Dallas.) People visiting his church would stay with us; the church even had a shuttle bus that would pick up and drop of these visitors. When that shuttle van hit and damaged our entryway, an accident I witnesses, the driver and church staff insisted that they hadn't hit it, that it had been that way before they drove up. They refused to pay or even contact their insurance company.
They hired some of the people who came to them for help. Some of these people left the hotel with unpaid bills, and when we called the church offices looking for the, they staff refused to let us speak to them. When church elders would come over to meet with these visitors, they would laugh at their gullibility. It was sickening. Once in a while I would feel like I could open a discussion, but most of the believers were star-struck, and could hear nothing bad about "Pastor Bob."
Meanwhile, Pastor Bob was usually at his mansion in California, only flying in to preach about once a month. He is also on his third wife. He talks about being a true Bible believer, but he has clearly skipped over the verses that speak of divorce and remarriage as adultery. He is a fraud from tip to toe, a thief and a liar.
Brother Bob's ministry now consists of a once a month meeting at a Marriott in CA. The last video I saw had about 5 people there. How the lowly have fallen.

I worked with Bob Tilton when he first started ministry back in the 70s and he was for real. I don’t know what happened to Bob I just pray for him. Money does strange things to people.

I have a theory about that. Televangelists seem to have the same mentality as Las Vegas performers. Think about it, televangelists, like many Vegas performers, are often people who grew up poor or had humble beginnings, and then found themselves making INSANE amounts of money very quickly. So they suddenly have the money for fancy hairstylists and flashy clothes, but their tastes are unrefined and tacky. Hence the big hair and ugly, gaudy clothes. The Bakkers and the Crouches are good examples.
Look, too, at the Copelands, and all of the False Prophets that we've seen in our own lives. And, as to how many of these False Prophets that there are, we've only scratched the surface, as to many of these children of the Devil exist! Good point, and by the way I highly recommend the novel you mentioned "Elmer Gantry" by Sinclair Lewis. Incidentally, the main female character in the novel and the movie Elmer Gantry is based upon the real life religious huckster Aimee Semple McPherson, who was the inspiration for Kathryn Kuhlman, who in turn was the inspiration for Benny Hinn. There's truly "nothing new under the sun". One of few actual truths to make it into the old testament.

In more ways than one, what he did is just as bad & evil as what Jim Jones did with The People's Temple Cult down in South America, which, I believe, was in Guyana. Nearly 1,000 precious people lost their lives, some forcibly, and some voluntarily, because they followed an unstable, and very dangerous, psychopath! When will people learn to wake up? I stumbled across this guy flipping channels when I was a kid, right after learning about false prophets in Catholic school. I thought it was a parody. My Mom thought it was a Saturday Night Live sketch, which made me laugh uncontrollably when "SNL" popped up at the beginning of the opening credits. And I watched it every single day.
What you may not know is how well his show went the day the PrimeTime Live piece aired. He knew it was coming that night, and during the segment at his desk, he went on a rant. He took his jacket off, removed his gold cufflinks from his monogrammed shirt, all the while screaming about how he never touched the money.
I'll never forget watching this the day it aired, I was in 8th grade. The PrimeTime Live piece ran on Thursday night, watched it with my Dad, we were both laughing the whole time. The next day, we got out of school early, and I rushed in front of the TV as soon as I got home to see his response. I still find this as funny as the first time I saw it.

Oddly enough; This guy and Peter Popoff (through his lies, his false promises, his high-sounding speeches, the gimmicks, everything) made me believe much more in higher consciousness and spiritual elevation through the willing act of employing the very ideology of good faith in my daily life.
We all should really focus on how this kind of scam works. It explains so much about why society is so screwed up when you scratch past the surface.
It's so tough when the goals of being a good businessperson and the goals of spreading faith, both which are excellent, truly fantastic goals, become intertwined. Honestly this juxtaposition is something I will really have to try and understand in my personal life for a while. It's so wild what's happened here. Honestly it's possible he simply had both intentions and through the combination and overlap of these things that a slew of corruption ensued and his "perfect business" came screeching to a halt as he used God's word for his *own* purposes and produced some kind of entertainment which was truly short of God's message.
I will really have to think this one over and try and understand it. I guess it's because I'm a businessperson and a person of faith and I feel like both things are awesome. But at my core I'm a person of faith and I believe that all business has to be done ethically, whereas it seems clear that his ethics became skewed as he strayed further and further from God's word and more and more on his sales tactics, which became more and more dishonest as he went.
He had a garage full of boxes of prayer requests, that his maid, testified, were sent to the dump, never having been read, let alone " prayed over".
I used to watch this guy every day -- late at night/early morning on BET. Most ridiculous crap I've ever seen. I didn't get into the habit of watching him because I _actually believed_ he was a sincere man of God; it was more the opposite: I just _couldn't believe_ that someone could be such a brazen fraudster and not only get away with it, but make untold _millions_ in the process from an endless procession of senseless rubes. I would watch him completely enraptured with near admiration for the level of blatant fraud this man was capable of. In my opinion, Benny Hinn has _absolutely nothin'_ on _this_ guy!!!

I tried to talk to my mother about SO MANY things! Things from her childhood that she is still feeling the INJURY and PAIN to this day... This is a good point, I think. If churches and ministries were held to the same standard as businesses, they would have all been heavily fined or even shut down by the Federal Trade Commission long ago, for peddling a product that is defective at best and harmful at worst. Whether it is the job of the more intelligent and enlightened mammals among us to protect the poor from the chicanery of the Tiltons of the world, is a complicated question I wouldn't dare to try and answer. It's a tough call.
