A great interview! I am of course biased as Mike was and remains a close personal friend. What struck me in this interview is his deprecating humility and modesty. 'Studied agriculture in the UK' was actually a scholarship to the Royal Agricultural College at Cirencester; a 'bang on the head' was actually a gunshot wound arising from dealing with a bunch of terrorists in a cave .... and so on. And to paraphrase a fellow officer in 1RAR: " that bugger Jones ... he speaks better Shona than my Platoon Warrant Officer!" A fine infantryman, and a cool and aggressive officer!

Crooks Corner, Palfreys Store………horrible, desolate places when approaching from the Rhodesian side but were the most beautiful places to behold when they came into view when coming back from 10 day patrol in Porkers…….great talk by Mike, even if a little harsh on the RLI!!!

Greetings Mike, Your humour and antics are legendary. Boet would often talk about you and roar with laughter when recollecting your escapades. Wishing you health and strength Salute 🫡.

I am still in a bind in my personal circumstances ... the familiar is comforting to me in these banging interviews ... I find myself becoming almost familiar with Wankie National Park, with Mozambique and Zambia, with the energy, the struggle, of the sort that never changes, but for the politic and geography ... always, people's hearts are drawn to defend what is theirs. I cannot judge, Rhodesian, Matabele, not Mashona ... everybody in this war suffered horribly. It teaches me about life and I thank you all.

Ja Mike, quite right about walking 20+kms to get into OP. That was the only way that you could insert yourself clandestinely.

I'll add my voice to asking John to definitely have a further interview. Very interesting guy with obviously many more interesting stories to tell

Good interview, looking forward to hearing more from Mike. (I can vouch for the bloody awful weather here in Wales at the moment, and the crap internet - Starlink is the best option if rural)

JOHN. Hi mate. Things worked out poorly in Africa. I ended up in hospital in Australia from June thru December. 4 operations, anaphylaxis, amputated foot.
Long story my friend. God bless
