This is the best version I've heard. This song needs to be belted out with conviction like it was being sung by a drunken pirate. You guys understand the song .If only Luke Kelly was still alive.
We all sang this loud as we were bussed out from Cornwallis, to fly out of Greenwood, after boot camp.... My family bluud is our old farm from 1815, Mabou, Cape Breton...and I am sad to say, I've never been back...but I, will always, like my dad, long for the sea, every day.
My favorite version will ALWAYS be the one done by Schooner Fare. Their harmony is spine-tinglingly exceptional. I can't find a recording anywhere though!!
Lex...THANK YOU!! I have been trying to remember Ms McKinnon's name for 30+ yrs. I remembered that Karen Oakley also covered this beautiful song way back in the late 60's. I left NS in 74 and have sung this song almost daily since. Thanks again for reminding me of Catherine McKinnon.
Try the Sons of Maxwell cover. love it. Any cover will do for me. I was born and lived there until age of nine. As I become farther and farther away from that time in my life, I long for it.

I've listened to like 8 versions, and I think this is my favourite.
That's a shame, I love the Schooner fare version, its OG, but this one has become my favourite to sing.

Great version. Irish Rovers did a nice version as well. One of those songs that's hard to screw up, it's solid.
The High Kings have the best version.
I'm sorry, but anything by Ryan's Fancy is better then any other version. Coal Town Road. I rest my case.
Every music site I've visited recently looking for Schooner Fare's version has had this video, and claimed that it was Schooner Fare.

Good stuff lads..this song is a dark horse..

Pioneer Happy: My favorite version is by Ian and Sylvia ( Northern Journey 1964 album) - it sends chills.
I love the tin whistle or flute in this.
I Like Ryan's Fancy and the song. Good stuff!
Brings me back to my childhood. But I do admit, I didn't know that RF did this song.
Please post all the songs on this album!!!!
This is very good. I especially like Catherine McKinnon's first version the best. What a angelic voice.
A spin off of Robert Tannahill's 'The Soldier's Adieu', but that's alright.
I can't tell you how relieved I am now that you've told us it's all right ......
SOAK IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@TheJabberwocky00 Catherine was a cousin of my wonderful mother!!
THE best version ever.
nope its Farwell to nova scotia
it's the tin whistle to high pitch for the flute
Shane mc Dermott from limerick, was the best .
