I also think that if you've got someone in a dominant hold, like a triangle, armbar or rnc, and that person tries applying pain on you (biting, nervpinching, eye poking or whatever), you will probably tighten the grip you've got with all your strength more or less reflexively. And THEN you'll swear and worry about how much it hurts. The defunct channel FightPerfect said that sometimes wrestlers who are frustrated enough in a bad position tries biting, and you can sorta tell it's happening because the guy on top starts to make weird faces, not by him going "ARRRGGGH!" and releasing what he was holding on to.

Feels like some of the objections is to techniques not being properly applied. Like with Donnie Yen not closing up his triangle properly. Yeah, but in the movie, it doesn't work, so that checks out. That is the movie telling us that Donnie is better at striking (and insane acrobatics) than at bjj. Like with James Bond (in his best movie) - he's a tough mean dude, but he's not a competetive wrestler, so it makes sense that his rear naked is a bit awkward and gives the other guy some time to flail around and reach for his gun before Jamie gets it working. It's different in WWE where the fiction is that these are the most effective and deadly moves known to mankind.

the biggest thing to remember when watching these is the year the movie came out. even if it was trash technique, was bjj techique as refined in 2006 compared to what we do now. maybe some stuff was more accurate for the time as far as how sloppy some of the general techiques were applied lol

Donnie Yens Flash Point had the best BJJ in a movie for its time. Donnie was a brown belt back when he did that movie.
He only has a purple belt in BBJ but yes Donnie Yen Flash Point is one of the best movies that has mixed martial arts
