    Hello Nancy, I know your video is 7 years old but thank you so much for sharing!! I've started up trying to practice my knitting to hopefully get better at it and even though, I've done a few straight needle and circular needles projects, I really want to get better at both!! I've never really learned the difference between needles as far as size, width, cable length etc., and I SO appreciate you going into depth about each types of needles!! Thank you again and have a blessed day!!❤️🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼

    Me and my mom learned to knit on round needles, and i just bought my first pair of straight needles. Have to say the straight needles are pretty fun, but they are *long*

    I found a whole bag of different size and shape knitting needles of a local goodwill store and in the bag were knitting needles on cables but only one needle was attached to it with a small round disc at the end so the stitches can't come off, it also had another one that matched it. I'm new at this and trying to learn the difference between knitting needles and sizes. Can you tell me anything about these? Thank you

    • @nobleknits
      @nobleknits  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Terry, So it sounds like you have an interchangeable needle set. The disc on the end allows you to turn the needle into a straight needle rather than a double pointed needle. The discs are also hand because you can remove both needle points and replace them with the discs, turning the cable into a stitch holder. This is helpful if you want to use the needle tips for another project OR if you are knitting a sweater and need to set a portion of the project aside to be knitted at a later time.😀

    I would love to have recommendations for beginning knitters. I don't want to go out and buy a complete set of needles, so which are the most common sizes to have on hand? Should first purchase be straight needles or circular? For circular, is it better to get a longer cable, or start off with a smaller length? When learning to knit, should knitters use steel/aluminum, on which the yarn slides easily, or use wood so the yarn is not so "slippery"?

    • @nobleknits
      @nobleknits  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Max, that's a great question. I find that most beginner knitters work best on short (9-10" long) bamboo needles. Bamboo provides a nice grip which allows you to control the yarn while still having some glide on the needles. I would avoid metal needles to start - they are just too slippery to control for most beginners. Now let's talk about the size (diameter) of the needles you'll need. Most beginner knitters start on worsted or bulky yarns, so size US 8 and 10.5 needles are the ones I would purchase first. 😀

    Do you have to use circular needles when knitting a baby blanket? I'm making my first blanket and don't have circular needles

    • @nobleknits
      @nobleknits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alexandra, No you can use 14" long straight needles as well. You'll just have a lot of stitches on the needle so I recommend using stitch stoppers (aka point protectors) when you set down your work so you don't loose stitches. 😀

    • @bevlenoir7473

      @@nobleknits what do you mean by "loose stitches"?

    • @nobleknits
      @nobleknits  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bevlenoir7473 Hi Bev, It looks like I made a spelling mistake! I should have said LOSE stitches. Sometimes when you have too many stitches on the needle, when you put your knitting down, stitches can easily slip off the needle. That's why I recommend stitch stoppers on long straight needles when knitting a baby blanket.

    What width of straight needles should I get as a beginner?

    • @nobleknits
      @nobleknits  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question, Willow Night! It really depends on what you are knitting. If you are making a scarf, for example, it probably won't' require too many stitches on the needle so you could use a pair of 10 inch needles. www.nobleknits.com/addi-natura-bamboo-10-straight-knitting-needles/
      If you are knitting a wider project that requires a lot more stitches, such as a baby blanket or a sweater, you'd want to use a longer needle. www.nobleknits.com/addi-natura-bamboo-14-straight-knitting-needles/

    • @khricket
      @khricket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      width all depends on the pattern/ yarn size. I personally find thinner, wooden needles easier to work with. they are warm and a little more clinger than metal needles. Im an advanced beginner i guess and knit socks and shawls.

    Hi, I want to ask, I’m interested in knitting, so I searched for knitting tools online, but the results shows the type of needles which have some kind of ‘hook’, is it okay to use for a beginner like me?

    • @angelicairene9512
      @angelicairene9512 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No..the ones with hooks are used in other method called "crochet". Knitting needles dont have hooks, they at least have one pointed end on them

    Uh... I'll leave this video with more questions than answers. I see comments thanking for the information and I'm like "what did I loose?". I don't see how this information is relevant. I went yesterday to a knitting store and I got all the information you have presented here only by reading the labels. Still I don't know which one does what and how to choose them.

    • @nobleknits

      Hi Coccinella, Hopefully, I can help clear things up for you. Straight needles are for knitting back and forth. Double pointed needles are for knitting in the round on small projects such as tops of hats, sleeve cuffs, and toys. Circular needles are for knitting in the round and may also be used for knitting back and forth on larger items such as baby blankets and shawls. When you knit in-the-round, you need to use circular needles that are about the same length (or shorter) than the circumference of the project. Let me know if you have any other questions. 😀

    Not enough info for reasons to choose one over the other in the tools and materials one would choose to use? Most people do not use plastic for lots of reasons. You showed the cheapest of everything available.
    Nothing about why wood why metal? Results or desire? Advanced or beginners, choices and why one over the other, nothing? Not enough information. Sorry try again.
    Trying to help you not get unlike, 😫 not trying to be hurtful or mean. Hopefully its helpful. 🤑
