  • An Inexpensive, Great Shave - The Merkur 34G & Proraso Green Soap is this week's video on Friendship Shaving. It really was a fantastic shave. The Merkur 34G paired up beautifully with a Feather razor blade.
    Proraso soap was one of my 'starter' soaps. With a full range of products to suit all skin types, it remains one of my favourite brands. I enjoyed the Green, Eucalyptus and Menthol version.
    With thanks to:
    Steve Dalton 👍.

    Great one Mark, when I started Traditional shaving, over 7 years ago now, Proraso was my main stay soaps and creams, along with other large scale budget brands like Derby, it was many years before I became aware of the small batch Artisan soaps in the market. After over 100 years production Proraso is still a great soap and provides terrific shaving on a budget options, even here in Aus.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same here, mate. Having been used to one can of shaving gel, for years, I thought I had hit the jackpot when I discovered Proraso and Palmolive and the Body Shop Macca Root cream. Then I discovered all the artisan soaps and my brain exploded! 😀

    Great Shave! In my opinion the Proraso product line offers kind of the “best bang for the buck” in the wet shaving domain. For about half the price (on average more or less) the “factory” Proraso shaving soaps and creams can easily compete with most of the “artisanal” soaps and creams out there. I do not have the Merkur 34G, but the 34C HD, which is often referred to as the “work horse” in wet shaving, which is actually a compliment, because this razor usually performs very well. You are right though to put a somewhat sharper blade into the razor as the 34 leans indeed towards the mild side. Cheers…

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tommy. The 34G is exactly the same razor as the 34HD, to my knowledge. It just has the different finish. It has been renowned for being a good razor for many years, and with Feather, and the Proraso it worked very well indeed. I do like a Feather with a mild razor, it has always worked well for me. Cheers mate.

    Proraso Green is one of my favorite soaps. I really enjoy an all-Proraso shave (the pre-shave, soap, and splash) using my Rockwell 6S loaded with an Astra SP or Gillette Nacet blade. Cheers...and have a safe and relaxing weekend.

    Yaqi sagrada Famila is a great brush I bought it as a travel brush. The Proraso soap is very good value I purchased one a fortnight ago for around £3 which proves DE shaving doesn’t have to be expensive in fact quite the opposite. DE shaving can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Keep well and keep safe.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Leslie. £3 is so cheap for a soap that lasts very well indeed. I wonder how many shaves one would actually get from a pot. I hope you are keeping well, my friend. I am doing okay, thank you. Masked and protected at all times.

    • @lesliefitzer2846
      @lesliefitzer2846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FriendshipShaving Mark since posting I checked how much I actually did pay and it was £2.99 from TK Maxx. I counted how many shaves I got from a Parmolive shave cream and it was well over 100 shaves and as there is more in this and it's a crope I would suggest more than that. If it was 100 it's only 3p a shave but I'm sure it will be less than that. That's good going I would say. I can shave for less than 10p including blade,soap A/S and post balm. Try shaving with a cartridge razor and tinned gunk for that and your using decent products.
      Keep well and keep safe.

    I haven't used a Feather blade in such a long time, but you make a case for using the 34G to return to one. I wasn't too sure that you'd steepened the shaving angle to 45 degrees, but I think that's how I'd tend to deal with a Feather. Anyway, thanks for the demo and for giving us an all-Proraso shave. Cheers.

      Agree with Mark there's a reason its a top pick among all DE razors for so long. I recently picked up a 34G and since the first shave can really appreciate it. Smooth, easy to find angle and ultimately can get a great comfortable shave. One thing to note at least in my experience for merkurs and many others is to be aware of even blade alignment when loading since there is a little play.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a great shame that Merkur have really fallen by the wayside in recent years. I think the 34c/g will keep being produced and making money. Good point about the alignment. To be honest I rarely check and, so far, have not really encountered any problems. Phew! 😊

    I was talking a look through you older videos that I haven’t seen yet, and this one caught my eye.
    I too use the Proraso Shaving Soaps & Shaving Creams. I generally prefer the Proraso White, and it’s the Proraso product I use most. Lately during the Winter months, I started using the Sandalwood which at firstI did like much because to me it doesn’t smell like Sandalwood shaving products I was used to. Later it grew on me, and while it’s not exactly like Sandalwood, it’s a good scent that smells better as a lather then from the tube. Also over the last year of so, I’ve been buying and using the Proraso Shaving Cream in the tube. I believe the cream lathers better… at least this has been my experience.
    Anyway… like you I did not originally care for the Proraso Green, but got a sample sent to me and had a completely different take. I still prefer the scent of the White and Sandalwood, but the Green is still pleasant… much better then I remembered it, but it’s quality is it’s refreshing feel. I will use it more during the warm Spring and Hot Summer.
    The Proraso Green Slash is a great way to finish off a shave with Proraso Green Soap/Cream, but recently I’ve been using mentholated Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm. It’s first very refreshing and cooling with the menthol being dominant, but as it turns down, it has a cool minty sent to it. It’s also a very good aftershave balm, that conditions your skin very well. I just shaved an hour ago with the combination, which is why this video caught my eye.
    And I wanted to let you know, you have me give some Straight Razor a look. I’ve even just purchased a sharpening stone set and a strop. Perhaps, after practicing sharpening some of my knives, I will feel confident enough to get a straight razor and be able to maintain it???
    Best wishes…

    Good afternoon Mark. Interesting that there is a good balance between a mild razor (Merkur) and a very sharp blade (Feather). I wonder if the reverse produces similar results i.e. an aggressive razor paired with a blade that is low on the sharpness spectrum? It always seems like a fine balancing act matching blade to razor.
    I've only tried one Proraso soap, and it's the one you didn't mention, the Proraso red tub. I liked it! Normally I keep away from Feather blades. I usually do a lot of damage (they don't call me 'Scar Face Dave' for nothing). Actually, that's a good name for a shaving channel if I ever decide to make a fool of myself in front of a camera.
    I am due for a shave tonight and I think it's time to change razors. I've been using my King C for weeks. I love it but I need to rotate razors a bit more. Hoping you are well, Mark, and your Mum. Have a great weekend mate!

      Hi Muhammed. I wasn't sure if you meant that your Gillette brush is scratched, and needs restoring, or that the hair in the brushes knot scratches your face.
      Yaqibrush sell excellent brushes at a very reasonable price, their synthetic knots are really excellent! The pure and black badger knots can be a bit scratchy, on the face. A two band badger or a silver tip badger are much softer. They are from different parts of the pelt.
      Is your Gillette brush the vintage black and white brush?
