I was 14 when this ran on Broadway. I went to see it and fell completely in love. I’m so sad it didn’t do well. A year or so later I found the cast recording in a local record store and I’ve been listening to it ever since - Lea’s Love Look Away is just gorgeous!
I really liked this reboot of Flower Drum song. I thought the new script finally made the show work, and the score is pretty good R&H. The whole cast was wonderful especially Salonga and Llana.
I would really love to see Barlett Sherr do a revival with the original script or Daniel Fish do a reimagining of the original like he did with the recent Oklahoma!
I'm very sorry I didn't get to see this show. Lea and Jose especially sound gorgeous - separately and together. And I'm also mesmerized watching them dancing!
Revisiting this video. Lea and Jose sound so great together. Hey - how about an album of duets? They can be musical theater duets or non-musical theater duets or some combo. I want to listen to them sing together so much more!
I am a theatre lover, but totally blind. I wonder if someone would kindly describe the dream ballet in flower drum song. As it is completely visual, except for the beautiful music, I have no idea what’s going on.
I wore my CD out playing that song again and again and again! Lea's rendition is so remarkable. It seems like it would not be all that challenging of a song--but it is!!! Lea hit every nuance of that beautiful ballad and it is so heartbreaking. My favorite duet with Jose and Lea is "Sunday"--such a sweet song sung by such outstanding performers.
But check out how Arabella Hong performed the song in the original. (See the clip from the Sullivan show.) It'll break your heart. The revisal flopped because it was so wrong-headed.

Thank you! That "Fan Tan Fannie" number is just fabulous, and I've always loved Sandra Allen on the cast recording. Jodi Long can also do no wrong in my book. Any idea why this production didn't have a longer run? I seem to remember the reviews noting the updated libretto didn't really do much to help.

I got the CD at the time and loved Llana and Salonga - such beautiful and expressive voices. The American Musical Theatre, San Jose version (on TH-cam), an authorized production of the revised Broadway show, proves that is has pretty music but is pretty unwatchable. Hwang's book is pure high-school shlock.
