- Pay no attention to the costume -- the voice will blow you away. The Yale Whiffenpoofs of 2011 featuring a solo by Nathan Calixto. Recorded at the Family Weekend Concert on October 22, 2010, in Battell Chapel at Yale University.
this is probably one of my favorite versions, even if sung in a pikachu costume
The most amazing a cappella performance I have ever captured.
Nathan Calixto never ceases to amaze me.
So beautiful that it reminds me of the movie “children act”.
Thanks a million!!
If the internet is good for only one thing it is that it can bring beauty such as this to people who would not ordinarily get to experience it.
The variety of music available on you tube is un-precedented.
Saw these guys just about a week or two ago at my Church. This voice stuck out the most, it truly blew me away. I've seen several live Whiffenpoof performances, and I must tell you, this is one of the most beautiful renditions I have ever heard.
When he sang this in concert last September in Bedford, NY, I saw jaws literally drop. It was that good.
I actually hugged the crap out of that guy in a totally bromantic way after a Whiffenpoofs concert at my college. True Story.
pikachu sure can sing a great version of our local song..... I used to live near the sally gardens
Yale has unlocked wonderful music here.
This slays me. I get goosebumps every time I watch this (which is a lot). I particularly love the last verse, & the way Nathan sings the word "laid". I hope this guy has a CD somewhere, but if not, I'd love to buy/download this version somehow. This is perfection.

+Jim Caldwell Thanks, Jim. I'd already checked it out. The recording, while great, doesn't even begin to match the magic that's in this video. :)
Very, very nice rendition of the song. Congrats, Nathan!
Our boys loved watching this in class! Well sung.
Remarkable and beautiful rendition!
Saw them in Nashville at the Exit/In. It was completely silent when he sang this. I didn't expect that since many of the audience expected pop songs! Great moment, and one of the best live sets I've seen. :)
I have finally found a song that fits my voice perfectly, thanks to the Yale Whiffenpoofs I got to discover this lovely medley, and I will definitely use it for future auditions
Beautiful, just beautiful.
A great sounding voice with much promise, emotion, tone, all that makes him a great talent. A pity that the pitch failed him in a few places, marring what should have been a brilliant performance. Singing this live acapella the way he started this song in this theatre is a big challenge, with his personal interpretation a difficult one to achieve. Great applause to someone with this much talent so young singing bravely and truly, Three Cheers for a heart warming performance!
La voz de este hombre me hizo llorar de lo hermoso que canta
besttttt versionn! ! 3333 I love the whiffs!!
Just saw him do this at the Strathmore in DC. Beyond description.
amazing voice
Wonderful!
@beccahostilo07 I was there too. It was simply incredible. That has got to be one of the best hundred nights of my life.
What a beautiful voice!
(what the _hell_ is he wearing did he lose a bet or some damn thing)
Me too, especially when it comes to this song, others are good too but he's the best..
MAGNIFICO
@SkydiveSabotage Yousir, need to make more video's ;)
wow nathan is hella cool
i work with this guy!
this guy has an absolutely beautiful voice. there are 2 or three notes that he could control a little better pitch-wise.
So sick
Beautiful, yes, but where did they get the middle verse? Yeats didn't write it, from what I can tell. Would be interested to know the name of the arranger.
The only problem with this this is that it's too heavy somehow...
It's supposed to be a little bit faster and more bouncy almost. very talented singers though
Like a church service. A dirge. Sure, there's a tragic element but...
How do I get this audio recording
Why is Lix Pikachu exactly? And why was this not on the show?
GO PIKACHU!!!!
Lovely song~
But why the Pikachu suit. I'm going to go nuts at this rate without an explanation.
Pika! Pikachu!!
Is there a composer credit for this?
It is a Poem by William Butler Yeats , Irish Poet,Playright & storywriter. + An Older Irish song "The Maids of Mourne Shore" has the tune. Another Older Irish song has the almost identical 1st verse-which W.B.Yeats readily admitted at its first appearance in 1895, which he remembered from his youth. Herbert Hughes, set the words and tune together in 1909. Various other musical settings were produced over the years, but, The Maids of Mourne,..has held good for traditional Irish singers for the 100yrs or so eversince. I also found an american composer,John Corigliano wrote and published his setting with the G. Schirmer Inc', possibly this version as sung above, including an added verse*( this last*-needs substantiating.)
Pikachu sure can sing.
nice but too sad for an Irishman of descent on a day early in September
Do you know what a salley garden is? (Google, etc. is cheating)
Salley comes from the irish word for a willow tree I believe. I imagine a garden along side a river.
why is he wearing a pikachu costume?
Great work, but a bit unusual style
no photography please
So, what's the deal with the costume? Did he lose a bet?
I wondered the same thnig
Beautiful voice, but why is he dressed that way?
Well done 🙏👌👊👏👏
He is powerful....stupid costume....as the only non Aryan he should have been spared this indignity. But fortunately his voice covers a multitude of sins.
You do know that the Whiffenpoofs, when doing concerts at Yale rotate wearing silly costumes? Asking him not to be in that rotation would actually be a sin.
Un clown tragique!
why is he in a pikachu costume?????
lol I thought it was winnie the pooh until I read this comment
why not?
