Your Krampus piece is SO cool! "Shadow halo" is my new favorite phrase. Occlusion solutions are definitely a thing in color art too. You have to separate the elements somehow. In the case of double halos or the collision of multiple shiny/metallic elements, and especially in color work, sometimes you get multiple "halos" and I have been thinking of this as the "occlusion stack" for awhile now. Rendering, midtone, gradation to highlight, highlight, shadow of occluded element, highlight of occluded element, gradation into midtone, rendering, more shadow...somehow, the artist needs to solve the problem of all that separation. Part of the beauty of pen and ink line art comes in the ways the masters simplify this problem. Thanks for showing the Frazetta piece where he uses every solution, of course Frazetta would do that, haha! There are a couple minutes of black screen at the end FYI, not sure if this was intentional.
Thanks Casey! I liked that "occlusion" concept, thanks for sharing that. Yes, that darned black bit at the end happened because of how I edited the music and the TH-cam editor tool won't let me clip it out because of the new "multi language" feature they've just launched - hopefully I can fix it later.
LOVE your Krampus!!! Pen and Ink is my all time favorite style. I'm still working on stylizing my art with more interesting techniques. I love your videos Chloe. I am so happy you are so pen-and-ink focussed.
If you're interested in studying, or at least taking a look at the art of another mangaka, I'd like to suggest Gege Akutami. I'm not sure, I haven't even read the manga, but something about his art really catches my eye, especially the action scenes
I am currently attending a 2 Year Artfoundation program and am very glad I discovered this channel! Since I am very interested in inking, I feel this here will help me deepen my understanding even more alongside my other teachers. Thank you for that 🙌
It’s soothing to watch the pen make the lines. I hope I can chill over the holidays practising with dip pens. I’ve been finding the India ink drying on the paper like paint so satisfying to touch it after and feel the texture.
Hi Chloe. I have to say it's always a delight when one of your videos turns up. So much to learn. I have noticed halos in illustration in various illustrations so it is good to see them in use.
Hola Por aki admirando su trabajo artístico, gracias por los aporte, usted motiva mucho para seguir aprendiendo esta fascinante técnica del entintado con pluma y tinta.👍👍
Hello Chloe can you make a master study video of katsuya terada and Kim Jung gi? I think their inking styles are quite unique and would be cool if you can demystify their inking techniques.
Those two were pals and are both on my list of master to feature in the future. Thank you for the suggestions (and support!). Happy holidays to you and yours!
What's your suggestion for artists starting out with A4 paper? I've been practicing with what I have (ball head pens, normal mechanical pencils and normal coloring pens) and the issue i run into everytime is that my art peice is either too big for the paper or too small. I mostly draw mechanical backgrounds and robotics and when I'm done my work feels incomplete due to the small size of the paper.
A4 is similar to the size that I use (9x12 inches). I plan the composition beforehand so that the dimensions work for the final piece. For smaller, you can cut the paper, for bigger perhaps experiment with whatever drawing materials you can get your hands on if purchasing is not an option?
@longstrideillustration I see. That's quite insightful ngl. I'll probably just work on my compositions. Art supplies are 10x more expensive for me (weak currency and shipping costs are legitimate issues I gotta plan around)
Hey Chloe 😁 👋🏻 Been learning a lot from your videos, can you make a video on how to make a black character in Manga like Casca from Berserk She had a greyish skin and her lips seem white in early Berserk and later they went detailed in Kouji Mori's style they don't have white colour anymore. Can you draw her and explain us ?
@@longstrideillustration Yeah please I wanna learn more, Casca is so pretty that I wanna draw her and understand how to draw black characters in manga you can draw Silat from Berserk as well.. I think Casca and Silat both are Kushans
Edges in drawing are the lines or boundaries that define the shape and form of a subject. They are important for creating contrast and distinction between different elements in a composition.
