    I tried the program "Grinding Angle Setter" in the affair, which was kindly provided to me Vadim. I liked how it works. It is more accurate than the Tormek WM-200 AngleMaster. Do not doubt, you need to buy. Must have. Thanks again.
    * The applet runs on all Windows PCs (the only exception is Windows 7 Ultimate where the applet calculates decimals incorrectly); Yes, I noticed this. But, it's not so critical.

    I had a thought of you making this video on a Saturday at the Tormek facility in the employee break room using in house equipment and that's just wrong because I know you've acquired that equipment yourself. It was a hilarious thought though.

      Ive come to realise Knife sharpening is a great place for obsessives to focus all their energy on the illusive ideal of the ultimately sharp edge. In reality, sharpness comes at a cost of longevity and so in a practical sense the sharpest tools last very short term in real world.

    Could you provide the dementions to build the wooden block. The piece I’m mostly interested in the height difference where the knife jig rests and the ruler. Is it 8mm?

    • @knifegrindersaustralia5158
      @knifegrindersaustralia5158  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, the border plank with the ruler on it is 8mm - just as needed for the knife jig to rest on it right. My wooden block is 90x90mm, and the offcut is 50mm thick, but if you sharpen many knives with short blades like folders, you may want a thinner offcut.

    Do you grind a micro bevel on your knife blades for edge durability?

    • @knifegrindersaustralia5158
      @knifegrindersaustralia5158  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only on camping knives and alike used for splitting hard wood.But we normally finish deburing at a little higher angle, seen as near 0.5 degree microbevel on the laser protractor - we do it to remove any remnants of the wire burr.

  • @perssoh11
    @perssoh11 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm ... What about the grinding angle at the top of the knife?
    Or are only the belly of the knife considered?

    • @knifegrindersaustralia5158
      @knifegrindersaustralia5158  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Håkan,
      This is always a dilemma. I set the grinding angle where the blade is clamped in the knife jig clamp. If we want to grind even bevels all along the edge, the edge angle at the tip will be higher (e.g. if we grind at 12 dps angle at the belly, at the tip the edge may be 15 dps). If we want to grind the same edge angle all along the edge, then the bevels at the tip become wider because of the blade taper. So when the esthetics mean to the customer more than function, we grind even bevels. When the function means more, e.g. a sushi shop, we grind the same edge angle.

      @@knifegrindersaustralia5158 That´s because you drag the knife and not lift the knife at area of the top of the blade. It´s all in a Tormek instruction video. th-cam.com/video/Kzobiiuqz5o/w-d-xo.html

    • @knifegrindersaustralia5158
      @knifegrindersaustralia5158  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shapeshifter1364 By grinding as you say, the bevel at the tip widens - some customers are OK with it, but owners of the higher-end knives like the even bevels all the way from the heel to the tip.

    What kind of tape are you protecting the blade with here?

  • @davesmulders3931
    @davesmulders3931 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    All this exact measuring, adjusting etc. And then you run the knife exactly straight even where it curves. Did it ever occur to you that you need to skew the blade to keep the same length from the support bar to where the blade is touching the stone? This is why your edge of your knife has a higher angle on the tip....you can clearly see it in the video even.

    • @knifegrindersaustralia5158
      @knifegrindersaustralia5158  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All factory and custom knives have edge angle changing from the heel to the tip to maintain a uniform bevel despite the blade taper to the tip - the only exception are some Japanese knives for thin filleting

    • @davesmulders3931
      @davesmulders3931 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a semi-circle and grind the round edge: If you hold the straight side parallel to the bar, the outer tips are ground at 90 degrees of what they should be ground. Depending on the initial length from support bar to the edge you will end up with either a very shallow angle and a huge taper, or a very blunt near-flat angle. In comparison: if you skew the blade around the center of the radius, it will always give you the same contactpoint on the stone, the same angle, and thus the same bevel along the full blade.
      What you do, kinda, keeps the angle the same in the exact vertical to the spine of the blade. But you most commonly use curved blades perpendicular to the edge radius itself, not the spine. It's mitigated a bit by lifting the handle, but it's arbitrary as can be seen in your aquired bevel width: it narrows in the radius, but it''s wider again at the very tip.

    • @knifegrindersaustralia5158
      @knifegrindersaustralia5158  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ideally it should be like you describe, I never argue that.
      The problem is that grinding a beautiful symmetric bevel of even height all along the edge with the same angle cannot be done using the stock Tormek knife jig.
      However, one talented engineer in the US has designed and made an advanced pivot knife jig that he is sending me this month. With this jig I should be able to achieve that. Give me a month, mate.
      When successful, I will post another video with a laser protractor verified edge angle.

    • @davesmulders3931
      @davesmulders3931 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Give me a month, mate. When successful, I will post another video with a laser protractor verified edge angle." I will wait with impatience.

      One point of this video is to show the use of software for maintaining the grinding angle on wheels of different diameter, another is that for high-vanadium knives like the one in the video you need SB and/or CBN/diamond wheels. In view of our recent research, aluminium oxide should not be used for grinding them as it softens the edge apex - see knifegrinders.com.au/SET/Sharpening_High_Vanadium_Knives.pdf
