Great little weekend side trip! Forgot how close lava flow came to closing off village’s harbor. You definitely had a smooth day for your crossing. Looked up history of Westman islands and found out it suffered an attack from Ottoman pirates! People were taken as slaves. How crazy is that?

That brings back memories. A friend and I travelled to Heimaey by ferry in January 1980. It was the last crossing for the day but I'd promised my friend to show her the new lava flow and some of island. It was still a bit ruined in places and some of the cliffs were still blackened from the eruption. The islanders had done a remarkable job against heavy odds to restore their homes and businesses. We travelled on the Herjolfur, but it looks a lot different inside from all those years ago. There was a strong gale on the crossing and the sea was very rough during the 3 hours crossing. I think we both earned our sea legs that day. On the journey back a couple of days later, it was like a different sea, all calm and the air was clear. It's a beautiful way to get to Heimaey.

Thanks for refreshing the memory of our own trip to the Westmans. The island at the entry to the harbour at 9:10 is famous for its shape and the lonely farm at the top. The cliffs and the birds nesting there were once a source of food for islanders who will dangle from ropes and pick the eggs. For a long time it was the poorest part of the poorest country in Europe, now Iceland's per capita GDP is higher than Germany's!

I yearn to visit this glorious country. Alas, I doubt it will ever happen. Therefore, I thank you most sincerely for showing us this beautiful place. I remember that as a child in grade school learning a little bit about Iceland. The one fact that stuck with my mind is that the place was so beautiful that explorers living there decided to call it Iceland in the hope that few Europeans would want to overcrowd the land. Now I see why. What a shame it would have been to turn this land into a concrete jungle.

    • @krisushi1

They're Chinese. It's part of their culture and maybe they need to be extra cautious letting Chinese tourists into Iceland in the first place. Also, they are in a confined space where face masks are still mandatory in different countries.

Good to see all ppl. wearing masks apart from 1 group with (defensive stance, arms folded body language) possibly wannabe 'freedom fighters' from the USA. Sth. ? 🤪
You and Nina do seem to travel quite a lot and you are going abroad soon, lucky you! so where are you going if I may ask? The furthest I've been from my mainland was Magnetic Island, not really what one w'ld call overseas! ☹
The Chinese ppl. are in a 'golden age' for them, it' good that they see and learn about other lands and about the ppl. and the systems. Also it's good that they do ? ? ? spend and give some back to the world.
The cliff is as if it's been painted with a 'palette knife' . . . funny isn't it? you have bare rock but add birds and you get greenery.

Next time you find a lava rock with crystals and the green mineral, don't toss it away. Keep it to send to me! I collect unusual minerals, and that would be quite an addition to the collection. Postage would be high,as I live in the USA, but I think it would be worth it. Keep sending the videos. Hello to your lovely wife!

I get you mate! Communism didn't exactly work out for them did it with so many starving to death, no access to basic medical care outside of the huge cities, human rights abuses galore, genocide.......and the list goes on. Without fail, they always have the money to go on very expensive tours. In Australia our borders are still closed except to New Zealand. Thank goodness we're keeping out the Chinese who had the audacity to profit from the pandemic which they started and yet we're still no closer to any answers to how they lost control of the virus! Not a fan of the CCP either.👍
