The gameplay looks great however the 2016 remake went a bit far in making the game Pixar like and losing the trademark snarkiness/edge of our main characters. Do they still have some of that sarcastic wit or are they still incredibly apologetic/overly kind?

That's why I always play a game on the highest difficulty (except in certain games where I'd genuinely struggle with that xD) because 9 times out of 10 that is the difficulty the game was actually designed and intended to be played at whereas the "normal" and "easy" difficulties are just downscaled from that initial "hard" difficulty for more casual playstyles and ease of access.

I'd actually be a bit worried if it _was_ as complex as CiT's, since that game capped a narrative "trilogy" (duology, let's be real lol) and still had to drop some plot threads to wrap everything up quickly. Great game and they fixed almost everything I had a problem with in the 2016 game, but I still prefer the PS2 games over this. The level design is nowhere near as good as the first two games and they are still going with this kid friendly approach with the writing and characters. • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think that's fair to an extent, but some of these levels are quickly on their way to being some of my favorites. "Nowhere as good" is a bit of an exaggeration, but those two are also completely different kinds of games from Rift, so it's all down to taste and adaptability!

My only complaint is that Gold bolts and Ryno schematics are way too easy to find (even without using the map-o-matic). • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

The Gold Bolt placement has been a bit on the easier side for a while now, ever since they were more directly factored into the design from the start, rather than based on what unintentional areas QA and focus testers found. I haven't loved the change either, but finding the Bolts via my own platforming/breaking the game made up for the thrill of the hunt a little bit here lol.
If I had to guess why they're a bit easier here than even usual, I wouldn't be surprised if work-from-home made user tests a bit harder to monitor fully/spin ideas off of. Some growing pains with WFH would also explain the occasional terrain clipping that a bunch of players have run into, I'd say.

Hey man, I absolutely love your channel. I’ve watched all the retrospective videos so far and I’m amazed at the time and effort you put into them. They are mega impressive and loved getting to relive parts of my childhood while I watched them.
I mostly completely agree with your review, I absolutely loved this game. Only (very small) gripes I have with it are the lack of weapon upgrade animations when you get to them to Level 5. One of my favourite parts of the older games was seeing your weapon essentially evolve like a Pokemon. There was something to satisfying about it that I would fully upgrade every weapon in older games (even the ones I disliked) just to see how it changed.
Also, and I’m not sure what other people think about this kind of thing but I thought the trophies were far too easy. I got the platinum trophy 5 minutes into my NG+ and I wasn’t even trying. No trophies for fully maxing out your weapons or for collecting all the gold bolts baffled me. I’m not a completionist by any stretch but I do like when a game gives me an achievable but challenging goal to keep me playing a bit longer. I just didn’t feel like I’d earned the platinum. Not an issue with the gameplay, I just like a bit of extrinsic motivation to justify why I’m playing the story again.

  • @Trax95
    @Trax95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

I finished and got the Platinum today and I’m gonna be honest, if I had to pick an absolute favorite from the series, it would probably be Rift Apart. Rivet is a joy to play as and I already enjoy Jennifer Hale, so double bonus. I was worried at first when I saw the trailers. Was worried they were trying some sort of inclusive new road that was doomed to fail. But instead, we get a character that is genuinely lovable and understandable. If ever anyone was ever going to play a single Ratchet and Clank game, I would want it to be this one.

"Rivet is a joy to play as" she plays exactly like Ratchet... there is no difference. And tbh. In my opinion Rivet is quite flat a character. She's basically "Ratchet in different". Could've done much more with a different backstory. instead it's basically "Left on a alone on a planet BUT has the morts. Doesn't have a clank... but looses an arm and because a GUARD BOT SHOOTS HER, she's distrustfull of Robots"... what would've happened if an organic guard had shot her? Would she have joined Nefarious?
In overall character, she is still quite similar to Ratchet... the whole Alternate Dimension was a massive waste of potential.

I'm going to list just my cons because the game is excellent and you've nailed the pros.
    1. I personally think the weapon variety need a tiny bit more. I did not need a whole three automatic blaster type weapons, and did not need four passive/turret weapons, most of which I never found very useful other than topiary sprinkler. I find it odd a forgettable weapon like the buzzsaw blades made a return when something creative and thematically relevant like the Rift Inducer (one of my favorites of the entire series) didn't.
    2. This might be "old man yells at cloud" but I think the humor was pretty lackluster. It's missing the satirical edge the first four games had, I imagine partially due to no longer being rated T. Like you showed in the nightclub, there are absolutely awesome suggestive jokes sprinkled in, but I still miss stuff like Nefarious' head picking up shlocky soap operas. And I miss villains who had a motivation beyond just being evil. The villains who were motivated by greed hit perfectly within the satirical anticonsumerist themes of the originals. I do know that, however, some of my story complaints are things that are just a product of being twenty years into a single franchise. I am very glad the focus was on Rivet because we've seen plenty of Ratchet.
    3. Not enough enemy variety. You've seen maybe half of the enemy types in the game by the end of the first planet. I remember old games had more (albeit shorter and less polished) planets with some unique enemies to every planet. The miniboss recycling is obnoxious as well, they managed to do it even more than Dark Souls and Sekiro. You get to moments that felt like they should have something unique and relevant show up to fight you and it's just Large Robot #12.
    4. I'm personally not a huge fan of the more open levels, save for the crystal levels of past games. This is totally subjective though, that's just me.
    5. I thought this soundtrack was pretty forgettable too, but I couldn't hum a theme from any game after the first three so it's been that way for a while like you said.
    6. The fanfare around weapon upgrades! I miss the little cutscene and big growing electronic drone that made you really feel the weapon evolving.
    7. Speaking of weapon evolution, it's lacking here. In UYA, weapons would change slightly in function as they leveled up several times on their way to max level, and I think they may have changed more from 5-8 as well? In this game nothing changes but damage up to level 5, and whatever evolution in function a weapon gets at 5 tends to be pretty lackluster. Some of them I couldn't even tell the difference. I miss big interesting changes like the lava gun turning into a liquid nitrogen gun (although I know for some people a change like that may be unwelcome).
That being said, I know I just made it sound like I hate the game, but it's still a solid 90 and an incredible game. I just wanted to share my critique with somebody as invested in the series as I am. I'm also knowingly looking at the original quadriology through rose-tinted glasses. Some of the critiques I made here absolutely do apply to the earlier games as well. I think this game has set a gold standard baseline for gameplay and graphics innovations that truly justify the existence of next-gen, and I know it'll only get better from here.

I have to say that while I do not have a PS5 or a copy of the game (yet), I did manage to play a fair chunk of it when I went to try it out at my local GAME store. I managed to play the game to Savali and did a little bit of exploration after getting the hoverboots (they had to close shortly after, and I was really gutted). I didn't immediately learn the hoverboots mechanic at first, failing the canyon jump over and over. The fact I had a little bit of open space to practise in just clicked in my head and I immediately had huge respect for that one little piece of level design that allowed me to do this.
When I finally get a PS5 and am able to play it in my own time, I do not know. But from what I've played, it's pretty much the pinnacle of the series thus far, and I am a *huge* RaC fan.

  • @JakeTheArmyGuy

I loved this game to death. I truly feel this is the purest, most distilled Ratchet & Clank experience. However, I have big two complaints about the game:
    1. There is no gameplay difference between Ratchet and Rivet. I agree that it makes for great pacing, but what is the point of introducing a brand new playable character if she plays identically to the existing one? I feel it's a big missed opportunity. Imagine if there were sections of planets that only Ratchet could reach, or sub-quests that required Rivet because she knows this universe's characters?
    2. The moment where Ratchet and Rivet meet is so underwhelming it almost angered me. In this continuity, neither of them have ever *seen* another Lombax before. You would think their interactions would be a bit more substantial or heavy. But the story never gave them time to really get to know each other. I wanted them to bond, to really connect over their shared loneliness, or even nerd out over each other! You criticized the Future Saga for not really doing anything with the "Ratchet has never seen a Lombax" angle, and this game doubled down on that I feel. Again, just a missed opportunity.

Rift Apart feels like nothing short of a masterpiece.
It hits that nostalgia sweet spot that Ratchet and Clank deserves being one of the only franchises that’s survived from my PS2 glory days as a child. As a long time fan, I can appreciate how this game caters to fans new and old and this most definitely is redemption for 2016’s flop.
It also plays to the PS5’s strengths with its rifts and lack of load times, as well as the haptic triggers feeling like an integral part of gameplay rather than just a gimmick.
The story is gripping and paced masterfully and character development for both new and old characters is superb. None of the main characters felt over shadowed or neglected which was a concern of mine before I began my play through.
While it is definitely capable of being a stand alone game for those new to the series, I will say that it’s done an incredible job of expanding and solidifying the lore of the old games that I wasn’t too much of a fan of when it was first introduced in the Future series.
Gameplay feels incredibly satisfying and fresh whether it be in combat, puzzles, or just exploration of the beautifully crafted planets. Just about every inch of every level feels meaningful towards the story and world building. Attention to detail is amazing and the first look at each planet was more than enough to leave me in awe.
Combat, once again, feels amazing due in no small part to the weapons. While it’s inevitable that I had my own personal favorites, when I took the time to use others for the sake of leveling them up, I found myself enjoying each and every one, including how I had to change my play style and tactics to use them effectively. This led to me switching weapons more and more often, giving me the feeling of being a literal one man army in a multiverse of madness as I blasted through with an incredible arsenal.
Besides bugs that will definitely be fixed with future updates for the game, I’ve had little to no complaints. With this dive into the multiverse of Ratchet and Clank, it still feels like we’ve only scratched the surface. I have very high hopes for the future of Ratchet and Clank and will be eagerly waiting for the next installment.

I enjoyed Rift Apart, but I have to say I disagree with so many of your points. I don’t think RA has anything on the original games other than what time and money has given it - amazing graphics. It also has generally decent gameplay and some fun gunplay, I especially loved the plant gun thingy. However, I think Rivet is a much more shallow character than you make her out to be. I agree with the aspects of Rivet that you mention, what she suffers from or has to deal with, but it’s done in such a lacklustre way that I didn’t feel anything for her. The story itself is so bland that i was never really invested in anything. Ratchet is a shadow of himself, unless he’s talking and bonding with Kit, in which case he’s great. And Kit is great. Clank is just nowhere to be seen really, and I greatly disliked his puzzle missions. Rift Apart is a symphony of sights and sounds, truly a next gen experience. But it’s so easy, reuses it’s enemies and bosses, and does not deliver a mature or funny enough story which is something I really do expect from Ratchet and Clank. Apart (lol) from that, good video!
PS: it’s a bit sad that you added that only “the most cynical of players” would disagree with you. I don’t think one has to be cynical to dislike parts of this game. Again, I liked the game, I think it’s a strong 7/10. But I do believe it has some major flaws which leaves it lagging behind R&C 1-3.

If you're gonna throw a jab at the end, at least have the decency to quote me directly - don't set up an argument I didn't make! Criticism such as some of your thoughts here are very disparate from the cynicism to which I was referring, and the two rarely overlap.
What I said was that over the next year, the cynical chunk of audience will latch onto Rivet's characterization as some perceived negative. It's happened before, more than once, _with just this series,_ and it will happen again this time! So, as I said in that same breath, the fanbase should prepare itself ahead of time, because over the next year we'll see an outpouring of negativity; the ones that liked the game will forget most of their thoughts on it, as usually happens; the ones that hated it will remember every minute detail about why this game is a slight against the series, the worst game in the series, whatever it might be (read some of the other comments here, it's already happened a couple times!); and somewhere in the middle, the narrative will start to emerge that this game was subpar, another step off the cliff after the PS4 game, or whatever drivel it'll be. It's not some Ratchet-exclusive thing either, it's just how gaming discourse is nowadays, because there's a small but loud chunk of every fanbase that actively has contempt for the games and fellow fans.

    • @AndysTake

@@TheGoldenBolt It wasn’t meant as a jab, friend, I just felt a bit targeted, but I’m happy you didn’t refer to criticism like mine then, only to what I suppose we both would consider toxic or unproductive negativity. I really do think this game was good, and it’s by no means a bad game. In my opinion, though, it lacked originality and a sense of self. That is to say, if Ratchet and Clank was the first R&C game I had ever played, I’d probably think it was truly great. But because I’ve played every game in the series, and because I began playing them 19 years ago, I’m a bit more critical of the game. Either way. I love your reviews of the original Ratchet games, and I’m glad you got to say your piece on this one. Also happy that you loved the game, I wish I loved it as much as you. But the inevitable bad faith arguments that we'll see soon enough aren't criticism, they're empty whining, and I have zero time for that.

Tis the main reason I bought a PS5 and while falling into a looming disenchantment after the intended direction and (retroactively understandable) time periods between, this was the light at the end of the tunnel. My few gripes are fairly consistent amongst the other comments - enemy variety, especially in the indigenous category, and with that, the element of crowd control weaponry felt understated: especially on the harder difficulties, you feel the need to knock multiple tough enemies at once with more than the peashooter types. That, or I just really miss the plasma Storm. From here though, leaves me caught in greater anticipation. Insomniac has knocked this one out of the park; but they've opened up the multiversial doors, polished the title logo as if entering a new era, thus seemingly at the precipice of an ever larger idea. I watched this off the back of your Deadlocked/Gladiator review, and where they were experimenting back in '05, some of thoe ideas/mechanics were touched upon here. Ergo, where they push into the future, and I strongly suspect they might, I'd hope to see those large concepts realised. Afterall, they have the power now.

I am current;y entirely obsessed with Ratchet and Clank franchise. I got Rift Apart on Steam recently, and I had the best time with a videogame in YEARS. Rift Apart brings to my mind Adventure Time, due to how unhinged it can be at times, and how endearing at others. This game became my personal definition of "triple-A gaming", right next to titles like Doom 2016, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bioshock Infinite or Dead Space. Currently, the best looking, one of the most visually and artistically consistent games I've ever played in my life. Rift Apart made me excited for videogames again. It's not perfect, even after 2 years it has a pletora of bugs, but in my book it's stil a fully deserved 10/10, Game of the Year material. If not for the fact that I simply cannot stand playing on controllers, this game would single-handedly sell me PlayStation 5.

Love this game as much as the past Ratchet and Clank games. There’s and Easter egg to sunset overdrive with giving you the opportunity to change bolts to the the overdrive drink from Sunset Overdrive. Now that Sony owns Insomniac, I’d love for them to port that game over because I love that game so much as well.

I am honestly kinda disappointed by this game, don't get me wrong it's fantastic, definitely an 8.
But for me is the fifth best of the series, only 9 planets, the arena sucks, no strong secondary activity, no Insomniac museum, no weapon customization, forgettable music (even if better than 2016), worst bosses of the entire series with absolute 0 variety (there are around 20 variations of the same boss i got SOOOOO tired of them) and even the final battle against the emperor is lackluster
Is it better then R&C 2016? HELL YEAH
But does it have the same quality of the original trilogy or the two Future games? Unfortunately for me, no it doesn't

i pre order it and 100% it, it was the “movie like” ratchet and clank game that I expect, it’s a very cartoony game and i love it, i love the added emotion side to the characters, why ratchet is hesitant to find his race, why rivet has trust issues, i love this, and the weapons are my favorite, using the dualsense adaptive triggers to it’s true potential, some weapon’s second effect requires the triggers to be half way. The aggressive enemies make the fights feel like the original game, where you really need to every weapons to at least survive. And it leads to the dash, giving you invisibility frames where (in harder difficulty) it’s Requires. I love this, despite it’s flaws, like the music not playing and the game crashing, but i played this day one, so I’ll let it slide. Ether way, all of the things i can talk about, golden bolt already said, so I’ll end it with this, this game is the truest PS5 game and the best showcase for it and ratchet and clank series. Insomniac, keep this up. 😁

Really the biggest complaint I have is the lack of weird gadgets. But it’s really a nitpick too because that’s only a complaint based on the legacy of the games. And there is a pro to having almost no gadgets, the flow of the game is VERY well maintained.

    • @TheGoldenBolt
      @TheGoldenBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd have to think that a stronger gadget focus would be a big focus of whatever might come next. Once I noticed during my second run, I missed the gadgets a smidge too, but I was still fine with it after that since this very much feels like the ground floor to build from and introduce new challenges and ideas going forward, a la Tools of Destruction.

  • @gaminggladiator06
    @gaminggladiator06 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

First off, i have to say that this game is one of the best ratchet and clank games i’ve ever played since CiT. i was a little worried after the spinoff games and the subpar EtN game and the really not good movie tie-in game, i was worried if this was it for the series. Not that it would end right there, but that the games afterward would be so cookie-cutter bland. So, i’m very glad that this game proved me wrong.
That said, i don’t exactly have this game as my #1, not to say it’s far from close. I still have to give that title to crack in time.
Now, this is only like a few bits from being up there, but that doesn’t mean i a higher love for crack in time than rift apart, i love these games equally.
The reasons for having it as my #2 are rather small, but prominent enough to be noticable.
One is that i just like the character designs from crack in time more than i do for rift apart. In CiT, ratchet’s design had a mix of edge and compassion. You can just look at him and think “he looks like he’s been through a lot, and yet still looks like a nice guy.”
In rift apart, ratchet’s design looks a little more”kid-friendly.” Like they kinda just stuck with movie-design ratchet and made a few tweaks.
And i’m sorry if you like the design and got offended at my opinion, i just find CiT ratchet better.
The other thing is the story, more moreso, how the story went along. In rift apart, it kinda felt like all the objectives the heros had were all lined up for them, and while the story itself was still good, and there were still some bumps and unexpected turns in it, it mostly felt a bit linear. In CiT, the only thing you had as a guide was your ultimate goal, find clank. Ratchet had to follow breadcrumbs in order to get to his next point of interest, and even then, he would sometimes have to go do other tasks of the path for people, like quark getting way in over his head at the battleplex and needing ratchet to get him out of it. I think one of the reasons the game felt a little shorter for some of it is because the crew never had to put their goals aside for something else. Even when they were slightly sidetracked by something else, they were still progressing through their main goal with ease.
This is the last one, and it’s not the biggest, but while the weapons were all fun, they were still a little underwhelming. Like i said, the weapons were still fun, and the use of haptic buttons was still cool, but they didn’t get me as much as CiT’s were. A lot of the weapons in RA were reused weapons from past games, some were reworked weapons of previous ones, and a few were completely brand new.
The roster for this game didn’t have much appeal to me as i was hoping. The exceptions to the completely brand new weapons that have different styles compared to past and present.
This part is only spoilery towards the weapons, so if thats fine, than continue, but if not, stop here.
    Thank you
Now, the weapons that got me, in style of old, new but old mechanic, and completely new, was the warmonger, lightning rod, and ricochet.
The warmonger is a straight up classic, it’s a rocket launcher, you can’t got wrong with that. It’s been a fan favorite ever since it’s debute.
The lightning rod is the new, yet old, because while it is a rapid fire electricity blaster, it’s still a blaster. Every time i used it, i couldn’t help thinking that this was just a revamped starter blaster, like they could’ve taken the actual blaster out and put this in it’s stead and it would still be fine.
But, that being said, i still like it for it’s ability to not only stun enemies after a number of rounds, but that it chains it’s attacks to other nearby enemies. The charge-up function is interesting, but not exactly noteworthy. I’ve seen a bunch of games that had electric charge-up weapons before. Still, pretty good for a new, yet old weapon.
The ricochet is one of the brand new weapons of the series, a gun that fires a ball out of it, that when it hits an enemy, you can repeatedly hit the fire buttoon afterwards to have said ball bounce of the enemy a bunch more times before the ball returns. Never have i thought that weaponiziing pinball could be so much fun. While the weapon does leave you open for a bit, needing to use it more with single enemies than crowds, it’s still a fun little thing to mess around with. I mean, the freaking thing makes pinball noises, how could you not feel a bit of nostalgia after just pulling this thing out. Even if you didn’t play real pinball before, some people had to have played that computer version that was already preloaded onto computers back then. It fun seeing a big metal ball just bounce off an enemy after repeatedly hitting the fire button. It felt like watching a pinball bouncing off the paddles and into a bumper repeatedly. I was going to put this game’s RYNO on the list, but i didn’t want to spoil it. Plus, the series always had a new one in it, so it wouldn’t feel like a completely new, but a new, yet old, if you get me.
Overall, the game is great, i recommend it to all to all series-hardened veterans. For the new players, i suppose you can play it to, but there are a lot of things that tie to previous games, so i’m not sure if you’ll get it entirely without going throught the series fully, but it’s your call.
Like i’ve said before, this game gets my gold star of approval, but my platinum trophy will always go to CiT.
And before anyone asks about if it was also because of the little things like character voices being changed, or some plot holes about certain things, then no. This is my completely unbiased opinion, the voices thing was just because some people weren’t available at the time and certain things that were left open or incomplete will not sway me from thinking of this game any differently than what i already think of it.
To put it to perspective, it’s like putting two works of art side by side. They’re both very lovely, but one has just enough noticable mistakes that it doesn’t put itself above the other. It’s still seen and cherished fondly, but t’s praise is just slightly lower than the other.
And if you really want to imagine how much of a difference my admiration is between the to.
Take out a ruler, look at the edge of the inches side, then go up to the smallest first notch on it.
And then reduce it by half.
That is my difference. My admiration has a difference between the two, but just small enough to be unnoticable.

The pacing between combat and platforming is near if not perfect imo . the only thing I really wanted was a longer story because the main plot felt split on a potential plot and what was actually done through that just makes me excited for the inevitable sequel even if it takes 3 plus years.

Some retrospective on Rift Apart after playing 1.5 playthtroughs (fon context, I've only played Deadlocked and the 2016 reboot aside from it so far, so knowledge of the series is limited. Loved the retrospective of Deadlocked BTW, great game overall):
    - I'm actually bummed that they showcased a good deal of the best planets prior to release. These planets are just so good you want to ignore as much as you can from them. Almost any of them is a different cinematic experience of their one they do not feel the same.
    - i was afraid about the low amount of planets in the game, but the 'revisiting' of some with each time a big enough twist actually increases the length of the game more than what you'd think.
    - the characters in this game are GREAT. Seriously, top notch. Even the smallest side characters have very distinctive quirks and personalities, and they feel whole the moment you start interacting with them. They even have their own common past which influence their discussions (I think everyone who's played the game knows which 'brovalry' im talking about).
Thr Rivet reveal was necessary because she's at the core of the gameplay loop, but there are some others which aren't touched by the showcase or very barely, which i loved because I'm sure everyone will enjoy them.
Also glitch and crank levels are great. I especially loved glitch because she gets her own side story to the main plot, which quite frankly surprised me.
    - the combat is incredibly fast faced yet very strategic in the way you approach each combat zone, especially at higher difficulty where the enemies literally rush your face 24/7. You have to make use of the phantom dash and Rift repositioning, else you'll die. Weapons are fun and the haptic feedback triggers are well made use of. It basically makes every single weapon a more unique thing instead of 'press one button to do one effect'. And it's great.
    The qualms i have:
    - ammo economy: better than in 2016 at high difficulty (god it felt awful), but could still use a quicker ammo crate respawn, especially the early levels in the first play through, i was ALWAYS out of ammo because the enemies were literal bullet sponges.
Rejoining Bolt on the heavy weapon damage on bosses. I found later in the game that the best DPS on bosses is CC them then melee with the wrench. The wrench does a ludicrous amount of damage of bosses even at the highest level (3 to 4% per hit and it's unlimited xD).
    - Rough take but the raritanium based weapon upgrade system is getting super old super fast. It tells you it gives you agency over weapon build but it's not, only maybe in early game decisions, but since your choices are limited by the weapon level it's not really agency.
I wish we had something like deadlocked where you could add a specific weird effect to any weapon to vary the things they do, or what you would earn from them (XP/bolts).
I hope they get away from it next game.
    - minibosses are too little. They get repetitive quite fast because they're overused in the game. They even barely have 'reskins' which makes it worse i guess.
Overall it's a great R&C game and the reputation it has as the legit flagship title of the PS5 is far from overdone. Anyone (even non fans of the series) who wants a PS5 should own this game, and I say this as a rather neophyte of the series.
I wish I could say more because there are so many loving moments in that game, especially with the characters, but that would be spoiling them greatly, and you want to play that game without knowing too much, else it would take away its greatest magic.

I hadn't played a Ratchet title since Deadlocked, and as I went through the archives of titles I hadn't played, I was expecting to finally experience the downslide in quality I'd heard about from a friend who had played all the game, top to bottom. Thankfully, I was blown away by how good this game has been. I haven't been able to 100% a game of the 13, almost 14 hour length that this game was without slipping into another game for a while before continuing. I also had a new experience of NG+ing the game as soon as I was sent back to the main menu, instead of waiting a few weeks/months. I'm pretty sure I missed a lot of context, especially around the pirates and some of the side characters, who I wanted to see more of, but it was definitely one of my favorite games of the past few years.
I am so thankful the game is as good as it is, because it scratched an itch that I've had since a year or two after Deadlocked released, and restored a lot of faith I'd lost in the games industry's ability to make great games. Shame there's so few PS5s floating around, or the game probably would have gotten record breaking sales for the series.

Agreed. I love bolt's passion for all things R&C but rift apart felt more about showing off the tech than being a groundbreaking game. By far the best PS exclusive on current gen consoles, but as an isolated game I am not headd over heels in love with it.
I plat'd the game after the first level of my second playthrough (just needed to buy the secret weapons from the vendor). Here are my thoughts:
      Pros:
      - amazing gameplay, best shooting mechanics yet
      - best graphics of the entire series (hud and menus are quite slick)
      - controller feedback is amazing
      - suprised at how much I liked Rivet, very cool character
      - pocket dimensions were usually very cool puzzles
      Cons:
      - feels 'stripped down'. No space combat, no giant clank battles, no races (aside from one in the arena planet), no hacking puzzles (although this was replaced by glitch I suppose) and fairly short main campaign.
      - clank puzzles and glitch puzzles are both cookie cutter and rather dull. Just wanted to get back to Ratchet/Rivet.
      - very little Captain Quark, no Al (aside from a balloon), wasn't a fan of Dr Nefarious' redemption arc.
      - rift mechanic was wasted outside (admittedley awesome) set-pieces - just used for quick teleportation in combat
      - The bug and dragon riding mechanics are frustrating and not particularly fun for me.

My O N L Y gripe with the game was that every time I saw the boss meter pop up, I was left a little disappointed in the variation between bosses. To me, seeing that giant health meter had me expecting something dangerous and unique, only to be met with what you could consider "tough mini bosses".

Honestly, the game and story is really good, but the game is way too short, too linear and there isn't much to do in ng+ except get the trophies that you missed in ng. There's a reason they keep splitting Ratchet and Clank, and it's because their relationship has already hit comfortability. Rivet is the wrench in the equation I think we needed to avoid hearing a ton of complaining that they're bland a la 2016, to be frank! As for Challenge Mode, there's rarely really anything to go for beyond new weapons and cleanup, so I can't say I'd know what you'd expect - my only NG+ disappointment is that we didn't get an Insomniac Museum this go-round. Otherwise, the weapon balancing and scaling has been incredible, even above Nexus for me, a game that nailed that perfectly. I'm halfway through my third run and I still have to get 15 or 16 weapons to level 10!

In my opinion Rift Apart is OK to good... but not the OMFG AWESOME thing it got hyped up... For me, it wasn't nearly as bad of a letdown as KH3 or FFVII FR. However it felt more like Quest for Booty or Into the Nexus rather than, for example, A Crack in Time (which ground it retreats a bit with having Ratchet and Clank split up again). Some spoilers ahead.
Gameplay is good graphics are great. Weapon choices overall fine. But i miss the groovytron and the party mushrooms are no replacement for Mr. Zurkon.
No Lawrence is a major letdown because his snark at Dr. Nefarious was always a highlight. Also Dr. Nefarious' running gag didn't make an appareance, so instant minus points.
Emperor Nefarious also wasn't really impressive imho. He was a bit too goofy or at least didn't switch between sinister and laughable as well as Dr. Nefarious in older games did. Since I am german, I played iwth the german VO and there I also have to say: His (german) VA didn't help either. Sounds more like a petulant 17 year old or so. Also, Dr. Nefarious got a new VA in german which was a major downgrade. Clank I think also got a new VA but he at least sounds similar.
I also think that the whole switching between Rivet and Ratchet overall didn't really click with me. It reminded me a bit of the MJ and Miles Morales parts of Insomniac's Spider Man. Luckily RnC didn't have a gameplay switch. But still. It's been ages since the story got continued with a PROPER part of the series. And for a return I'd have prefered to spend more time with Ratchet AND Clank, rather than also having to introduce Rivet and KIT.
Might also have to do with how we're thrown into the dimension that is pretty much already set up for a big blow off. But "why care"? We have little relationship wth them other than there are counterparts to the characters we know and Emperor Nefarius. And overall the game feels a more about Rivet VS Emperor Nefarious with Ratchet and Dr. Nefarious mainly there to introduce them. Linkara, in his review of Flashpoint, raised a similar point about the Flashpoint Timeline characters. There, all that stuff got tie ins... but why care? When the timeline is fixed, they'll never have existed to begin with.
Here it felt for me like the stakes for RIVET (the dimension stuff was caused by Dr. Nefarious and RnC) were basically just there because "Emperor Nefarious evil.".. and he didn't even take the stage until halfway through the game. Yet the game at the same time feels to be a bit more about Rivet than Ratchet. But at the same time... Rivet just lacks in the character department imho. She has no real "standout" trait so far taht really sets her apart from being anyhting other than "Ratchet in a bit different". Ratchet at least started out as a, for many, unlikeable Jerk and grew out of it... here? Rivet is half "fully formed" in terms of character and half unfinished...
It kinda feels like, if we round up the play time to 20 hours, the game was 5 to 10 hours too short with both characters, Ratchet and Rivet, imho needing a good chunk of time more. Rivet gets the Arena, whcih imho was kinda underwhelming in this time. Ratchet has. Right nothing. And Rivete could've used more story to show her backstory with the Resistance and Emperor Nefarious and so on.
Also felt a bit forced when Rivet and KIT gave Ratchet "shit" for being worried/might not be interested in looking for the Lombaxes... the game apparently forgot about the events of Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time with the dangers that just "go looking for them" could bring... and the dimensional troubles of Rift Apart itself. No, the game is basically just "Ratchet fears that they might not like him! Or he might not like htem!"... Wehad the Cragmites and Azimuth to be a warning for Ratchet. It made sense for him to be heads over heels for it in the Future games, because he had just seen the chance to find them. And now, after years... he'd seen what the obsession with that stuff could bring.
But nah, such complex emotions aren't interesting. instead he's angsty because "maybe they won't like me!" and instead Kit and Rivet, who haven't seen what Tachyon and what happened with Azimuth, are all "atta boy!" and in implied way "Don't be a coward. Why wouldn't you like to meet htem?!"
Also the armors... i appreciate the concept, but i think i liked the older armor system more... and the designs weren't stellar... I kinda miss the DeadLocked armors, they had some great designs.
It wasn't a bad game but in my opinion also not the great big bang for PS5. It feels like Rift Apart is Insomniac getting back into the groove... but not quite back there yet. I hope the next big RnC won't wait til the PS6 and will be a banger.
ALso the new ships are lame. I miss Aphelion.
Btw. A small logic issue I have with "Rivet and Kit are Ratchet and Clanks counterparts" (afaik though they said that they aren'T ACTUALLY their counterpart because Lombax dimension travelling etc. but still) NONE Of hte other characters have an other gender Counterpart. It's not Empress Nefarious or whatever.
i have no issue with the mc gender switch myself, and i understand it as far as that, as a lombax, she isn't really native to the dimension herself and probably got stranded there early in her life. However the game still tries to "sell" her as Ratchet's counterpart.
I guess part of the reason of not swapping other characters is how recognizable they are, while Rivet is new. But in turn it kinda makes the alternate Dimension a bit of wasted potential, with all of them still being quite samey, aside of mr. Zurkon.
Rivet's background, EmpFarious aside, even seem quite similar to Ratchet's instead of her having a different one that could've given a nice contrast.
And instead of using the set up to bring back old characters, like Sasha etc. We only get Pete, Skidd (potentially because of the 2016 game) and quark... and their counterparts.
EmpFarious could've at least had an alt version of Courtney Gears imho.
We could've had a bunch of former villains return as EmpFarious' Henchmen. Courtney Gears. Vox and so on. Instead we constantly fight the same kind of giant robot as boss.
Heck for Rivet's backstory. Maybe instead of "Alone on Sargosso" (with the MOrt.) She could've been happily adopted and was orphaned later by Nefarious. Would've been more interesting than "she is fighting against him because he's the villain and she's this universes' Ratchet." Or hell. Why not have her start out as villainous?
I also thought that the whole "she distrusts robots because of her arm" was a bit week. She was trying to break in. If it'd been an organic guard that shot her would she have distrusted organics? She got shot by a robot guard and lost her arm (but somehow could build the replacement) and now she dislikes robots. It feels forced. Like it was added to give her a bit of conflict with Clank early on and a reason to leave KIT later.
Of course they couldn't have KIT do anything really bad but maybe instead after she lost her arm a group of the resistance could've been attacked by one of Nefarious' attack forces and gotten decimated?
another logic gap: In that universe, Nefarious NEVER lost... so why is he 1) A robot that is 2) in the Polaris Galaxy?
If he never lost, he'd never had to be rebuilt as Robot. Without Ratchet and Clank stopping him, he wouldn't have gone to the Polaris Galaxy... So he should be an organic in the Solana Galaxy

I felt like certain boss fights failed on a very critical level to test players on things they've learned.
That purple dash punch. I just had to pray that they didn't use it enough times to end me, because I didn't figure out how to avoid it until I looked it up after beating the game.

So, I finally played through it myself and I still prefer the PS2 titles based on feel more than anything.
Rift Apart ist still absolutely awesome and probably the best game in the series mechanically.

I've always been kind of interested in the R&C series, but never had much of a chance or reason to really dig into them. This game is what did it for me.
My husband - who's played a decent chunk of the early games - played it while I watched the first time, and I've been hooked. I'm doing my own playthrough now, and been having even more of a blast than I did just watching it. I've fallen in love with the characters and the world, and been binging on the R&C lore ever since to catch up on lost time. The new art style they went with is perfectly my brand - toonyish with gorgeous realistic textures and a very detailed world.
I sincerely hope Insomniac continues in this direction - I want to see more of THIS story arc, with THESE characters. I'm so happy they put so much effort and love into this game, because it really shows, and inspires others like me.

I absolute loved this game don’t get me wrong, but this game was so short, I got my Platinum just under 7 hours of gameplay which… is really disappointing since i’ve been waiting for a full fledged game since A Crack In Time

I told myself that for my first playthrough I was going to be relaxed with it,that I wouldn't go for every collectible and that I would focus on the story. I was wrong. I ended up completing 96% of the game on my first go through. Not because I felt the need to have 100% but just because I explored that much. I probably would of beat the game in one sitting if I didn't have to go to work. Instead I beat it in two sittings

Had a really fun time with the game, the extra mobility feels so good and I want more of it yesterday. The pacing definitely feels really nice, and every planet felt like a very considered, unique episodic adventure, sorta like a Ratcht TV show in a way. Rivet worked for me, but I do feel she's too similar to Ratchet for her own good. More unique differences like another alternate dimension character would be nice. Also noticed how much the RYNO 8 just didn't help me, especially when farming for Raritanium. That Grind also made me realize that, yeah, more enemy/boss variety would be nice.
Gotta say my favorite scene was one where Ratchet talked about Captain Quark, if you seen it, you'll know. It was a really good scene that not only served the game's general themes of confidence and overcoming doubt, it was just a really nice scene that drew on the series/character history and gave me a new appreciation for Quark and Rathet's relationship. Genuinely made me tear up a bit, I want way more of that.
All in all very happy with it and I hope some of the possible story threads left are followed up soon for a new game.

After a year of waiting, I finally managed to get a PS5. I'd say i'm about halfway through my first playthrough, and good lord this game went above my expectations. Every praise this game gets is honestly an understatement. It was hard waiting this long to play the game and even harder not watching videos about it. More than worth it powering through.

Was trying to decide if I wanted to get this game or not, since i haven't played a ratchet game since the first trilogy of games on the PS2 after up your arsenal haven't gotten to play a single one. Watching this has convinced me to buy this one lol, it's time I return to a series I absolutely loved during my childhood :) .

Being one of the lucky ones to have a ps5 under my possession, I had the pleasure to complete this game and it is...phenomenal, but definitely not perfect. Storywise I got a bit disappointed. Nefarious has been overused which definitely means we lacked a strong villain figure and I expected a bit more focus (and progression) on the whole Lombax story. I also missed the more serious tone R&C used to have in the older games up until ACIT. The writing does have heart in it, sends some truly great messages out there and Rivet is an awesome new character, but I feel storywise great opportunities were missed here. Plus not a single mention is being made on Azimuth, Talwyn or Cronk and Zephyr which is odd to say the least. Especially for Azimuth. Voice acting is awesome though and we should point that out. Gameplaywise is in my opinion the very best of the series. The movement and weapons feel incredible and there are some stellar action sequences here. There isn't a single filler moment in this game and everything is so masterfully crafted that trully indicates the love they showed. Visually it's stunning and the worlds feel so alive and detailed, while there is literally zero loading...
All in all, because this got way longer than I intended, if this is the beginning of a new era of R&C games, it is definitely a strong basis and above all an addictively fun game (which is what matters most after all), but could do better storywise.
