That piston looking think is a pneumatic or gas strut. It uses compressed nitrogen to say "open" until enough weight is put on it to overcome it's fixed resistance. That looks like a nice grinder. I'm currently using a Harbor Freight 4x36. (yuck)
Yes it is a gas strut. I used to use a home made one my brother made when we shared a work space but i bought this one when we each bought a home and started working in our garages.
I saw that one when i was shopping around. It was cheaper but i knew it was going to be hell for me to try and line everything up just right. So i went with this guy instead.
Just got mine today, switching from 1x30 super stoked now to figure out what attachments and what belts to get so many options for attachments

Nice man! I have the older version and the motor is not attached to the chassis. Set up was a pain.
