Thank you for this tutorial. It has answered so many of the mistakes I was and have been making. I now feel ready to try printing with my letterpress again. Catherine
Hi Arthur - cool to hear from another stone hand - I'm in NZ, the Victorian Precinct in Oamaru - south island. Its a wee town built of Limestone during the goldrush (1870's-90) - lots of Victorian architecture. The Precinct is the old wharfe/warehouse/railway area. I'm mirrorcity letterpress - the vids above were done in 2011 - when I lived in Dunedin. I moved here last November and now have 100 sq metres and alot more gear.
Rob, I am an old stone hand I worked in a shop with 3 verts, 3 large flat bed Miehles and of course a Heidelberg Cylinder and Platen. Now i run the Olde Time Print Shoppe at Gulgong NSW Australia, where are You?? Arthur Johnson olde comp.
We also tried not to use metal to metal we used wood furniture or reglets between metal. With the high speed autos formes had to be good, you can get away with rough formes for slow machines. Arthur
Handmade printing ! So cool ! Since I read "The Bookman's wake" by John Dunnig, I am interested in handmaded books. Thank you for sharing this serise of videios.
Didn’t notice page having been tied up with page cord before sliding on and of the stone. One other point the forme when tightened up slightly should be planed before final tightening of quoins.
When I was a kid, I found a skip full of the print plates with icons on, stuff like hands pointing and scroll patterns. There must have been over a thousand different pictures for signs etc. Wish I had saved them, looking back, what a waste!

I just watched Linotype the film, and loved it! Very interesting.
I had one of them John Bull print set toys when I was a kid and wish I had gone down that career path.
And the last of the three - btw I did these vids during and after the Chch shakes - a hard time for the Ville and one they're still recovering from.
thanks Catherine - and have a great Xmass..

I think they belonged to 'The Yorkshire Post' in Leeds, and were thrown when they went digital or photographic type.
