Great ideas. Inexpensive, convenient and practical is the way I roll. Also, you were smart to put your boxes in the open away from trees to protect the baby birds from predators.
Didn’t know what I was gonna do for my Mum birthdates. She’s almost 90 years. She doesn’t really want anything but this is a great idea I’m going to build her a bunch of bird houses put the rebar down and attach it to the galvanized conduit I know this sounds wrong 🙃 my Mum and Dad bothering her go out several times a week just taking pictures of birds. Out in the woods and parks. This will be perfect for them. Thank you so much for sharing your time and your videos I really really really really do appreciate it
Enjoyed the video...like the way you think...easy, simple, inexpensive...I can tell I'll learn alot from you...thanks and continue the great work you are doing 👍👍
I love birds just for the sake of them being there, but am also happy to have them around to eat bugs and caterpillars etc. Watched your video about Larry earlier and was very impressed to see that you have vultures!! So cool.
The boxes are simple to make and we use a compressed planter pot inside for easier clean out of their old nest. Placement of ours on the edge of the hedge rows and ~100ft apart. To protect you produce have some type of watering device located in the garden for the birds to drink from. Enjoy the birds.
Lol, Josh, you remember me telling you that you and I are alike in ways, well I have about twenty bird houses in the yard 😂. Not in the garden per say, but close enough. I like the idea of using the 1/2” EMT conduit though, surprisingly I’ve never thought of using that with my bird houses because I’m an a electrician and use conduit all the time LOL.
Loving your channel! I can see all my favourite youtubers in your videos like the JR chickshaw, JS chicken tractor, JM fortier market gardening and some habits picked up from Curtis Stone. You are living my dream friend! Video quality and content is great, you just need a mic i think :). Can you do a video on how you got to where you are today?
We have five bluebird houses on our five acres. Lots of other species also that love our blueberries...….lol Do you have a video on your hoophouse. Also what direction is the hh facing? I subbed you this week and will be sharing you because of your content and knowledge. I like the fact you are not afraid to credit other growers. God Bless...…..
I don't have a video on my hoop house, but it's on my list. It is facing NE-SW (ish) so not ideal, but it's kind of where it fits on the property. And yeah, we all learn form somewhere. I'm just doing my part to share my knowledge and experience with others to help more people grow more food.
Hey Josh! I know that this is a old video, but I just found your channel and love your ideas! How do you guard again raccoons and other wildlife from climbing up the conduit and destroying your bird houses? I was thinking about greasing the conduit with lithium grease that I have from around the farm.
@@JoshSattinFarming Yeah Im looking for land, City bound but been growing in my postage stamp of a Town house yard for 5 years. Was thinking of trying to shoe horn my way into micro-greens but need $ for stuff lol
I do enjoy watching them too BUT, I don’t enjoy watching them put holes in all my tomatoes. As soon as they turn yellow, or the slightest bit orange, they’re ruined. Have lost so many big heirloom tomatoes to these wonderful birds. 🙄
Try putting a few birdbaths around and they will stay out of your fruits. The birds are thirsty and that's why they are into your tomatoes. We put in three baths and boy do they love them! Good luck!!!!! 👍🌱🐦
Here is a possible idea to keep birds away. I saw this suggestion on another TH-camr’s channel. I don’t remember the channel though. When first planting your maters have tomato cage or trellis up. Tie a few green and red shatterproof Christmas ornaments to them. This way the birds check them out while the plants are growing and by the time the maters are fruiting the birds will possibly leave them alone.
Do you ever have issues with birds taking your young lettuce ? I suspect a bird bath may help me, but the birds have decimated my lettuce this year (small scale home gardener)
I haven't had issues with birds eating my lettuce, but that does sound a bit odd to me. What kind of birds? You can always keep some netting on your beds and that will keep out most animals from eating your crop. Or use some insect netting and then you have other pest protection too.
DID IT ! And....I have a pair of bluebirds !!!! EXCELLENT VIDEO...easy.
Thanks Josh, over the last week I've watched all your videos. Please keep them coming. Mark from Australia
Thanks Mark! Glad you have been enjoying the videos.
Two favorites - gardening and birding - great video! Thanks Josh! :)

Super cool use , of the electrical conduit and rebar . Loving these vids man!

I have three bird houses up, several in the trees and four 2 liter bird feeders. In the growing season the adults take the fledglings into the garden.
The sound is great trying to get humming birds in our yard
Lookin good Josh.
I love birds and that's perfect in your garden.
Nice idea!

Hahaha loving the Portlandia reference. Love your videos as well!
Nice! Glad you caught that reference. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I'm a new sub. I really enjoyed this video. Never thought about using birds as pest control for the garden.
Keep up the good work.
I know this video is a few months old, but Bluebirds will have multiple broods a year. Last year, mine had 3!
Nice!

Your farm is the exact size I want.
It's a great size. The yields can be incredible.

@@davefroman4700 You can always grow food on other people's land and barter for food that you grow. If you want to do it, get creative!

Is there any concern from birds eating your crops due to this? Thanks!
The birds are around anyways. If they wanted to eat my crops they would.

Please, don't touch a nest. Never, it's bad for eggs.
