AGrayPhantom my geography professor was raised Amish. He loved to watch the jets fly overhead and was fascinated by their contrails. He said he realized by watching them that there was no way the earth was flat. He was beaten, shamed, for not believing. He eventually ran away and with help, finished his education. His family has ostracized him. I find that so sad. His hardships though, I felt, made him such a fabulous teacher. His love for learning, knowledge, made my classes with him the most enjoyable.
Please don't use the word "theory" like this in that context. One is a model describing facts about the environment we live in, being the pinnacle of what science can possibly achieve, the other is a spontaneous idea someone pulled from their ass. I hate how the word theory is defined so fundamentally different in a coloquial context than in a scientific context, but that's what it is. Please don't use the term as if they mean the same thing.

Even when I was in high school in the early 1990s we learnt about the possibility of panspermia in science and in history. The idea of life originating from another planet and being deposited here goes back to about 600 BC.

I've always thought the government shouldn't be in the marriage business. The government should only be doing civil unions. Then any religion can do whatever marriages they want, according to their values. Certain churches or mosques can permit only straight marriages. Other churches can sanction gay marriages. Other churches can even do polygamous marriages. Marriages should be a solely religious ceremony and the secular portion should cover the legal piece through civil unions. Then any given couple could opt for just a civil union or just a marriage or both depending on what suits them. This seems like the optimal system.

I wonder if it’s possible that abiogenesis has actually happened on Earth more than once… but any occurrence of life spontaneously appearing would have gotten annihilated by all of the bacteria and viruses created by the first occurrence of abiogenesis. How the F*CK does he KNOW what to look for so that he can KNOW that...? What did that original life form LOOK like? How can we tell that it's NOT continuing to do so? Let's pick some numbers. Let's assume, it takes a million years of random chance to bring the right atoms together within the WHOLE of all the oceans of the earth to create a 'living object' from non-living objects (a new 'a-biogenesis' event). So, once every million years, somewhere in all the oceans 'new' life pops into existence from 'dead' chemicals. How the F*** would you FIND it? The chances are that 'it' would be 'eaten' by some already massively evolved life form or would fail to flourish because something that formed billions of years earlier has already filled the niche that the 'new' life could utilise. We can't even be sure if identical copies of the 'original a-biogenesis 'life' still exist today...... how would we KNOW it was identical to the original...... and how would we know if we have found a copy of the original..... or another original? They won't have chassis numbers or 'sell by' dates on them!

I wonder if it’s possible that abiogenesis has actually happened on Earth more than once… but any occurrence of life spontaneously appearing would have gotten annihilated by all of the bacteria and viruses created by the first occurrence of abiogenesis. Any other occurrence other than the first one would have no immunities built up to protect them from the mutations and evolutions that the first occurrence had acquired over time. Is it possible? I’m not a scientist so I have no idea.

Basically: Chris is proposing to teach creationism science wich means "We know nothing but possibly life was created" and this is like what? 10 minutes of class? And as i know from my time in school biology teachers already mention that.

Also in no way evolution is a fundamental part of biology. We could study biology finely even without evolution which we did before.

This is a classic. He argues that we'd expect to see something like the first example of 'life' continuing to 'pop into existence'..... and he argues that we don't...... How the F*CK does he KNOW what to look for so that he can KNOW that...? What did that original life form LOOK like? How can we tell that it's NOT continuing to do so?
Let's pick some numbers. Let's assume, it takes a million years of random chance to bring the right atoms together within the WHOLE of all the oceans of the earth to create a 'living object' from non-living objects (a new 'a-biogenesis' event). So, once every million years, somewhere in all the oceans 'new' life pops into existence from 'dead' chemicals. How the F*** would you FIND it? The chances are that 'it' would be 'eaten' by some already massively evolved life form or would fail to flourish because something that formed billions of years earlier has already filled the niche that the 'new' life could utilise. We can't even be sure if identical copies of the 'original a-biogenesis 'life' still exist today...... how would we KNOW it was identical to the original...... and how would we know if we have found a copy of the original..... or another original? They won't have chassis numbers or 'sell by' dates on them!
That is exactly what I was thinking. New life could arise from chemicals often, but it would immediately be eaten or killed by what is already there.
There is equal evidence that life started accidentally as that Popeye created life.
Therefore we should teach Popeye in science classes.
But Popeye is presumably living, therefore he can’t create the first life.

What does feeling guilty feel like? I honestly have no idea I'm convinced that I don't feel guilty ever about anything but becasue I don't know what feeling guilty is like. How can I know if I feel guilty?🤷♂️
@ConfusionFusion I see a psysch every month what confuses them is that I do appear to have empathy but I don't know what feeling guilty feels like, perhaps I've never done anything to feel guilty about or I simply don't have that emotion.

You see 5 years ago my dog and my father died on the same weekend my father helped me bury her then the next day he passed away one year later I woke up cuddling my wife's corpse this wrecked me in a way I can't put into words, but the loss of my wife (I was 43 she was 46) brought out an emotion I had never felt before along with the feelings I had earlier with my father and dog. I believe this to be sadness anger and empathy, I could be wrong.
I can't say if I have never hurt another I am merely saying that if I did perhaps I was unaware of it. Basically, I don't understand what some feelings should feel like. Guilt regret and the thing people call a conscious I simply don't know and no one can seem to explain to me what it feels like so how can I know what feelings are what.
