This album is incredible! A thrash record that has so much intensity and does not sound the same as everything else. True masters at their craft!

EDIT: Motor kill-er, No Filler. Many blazing riffs and solos going strong right from the start. Wouldn't be surprised if many of us mention it among their faves in December.
Highlights: Title Track, 'The Surgeon', 'Twist of the Wick', 'Fever', 'Harder they Fall' and 'Bag o'-Chugging Goodness'.

I consider myself a casual Overkill fan, but damn I can't stop listening to this album. I've listened start to finish at least a dozen times and it's motivating me to go back through their expansive catalog. I love the new Metallica too, but while that one is a slog to get through, this one I've caught myself restarting at the end for another listen.

One of the most consistent thrash bands right from the start. Your right, they really don`t have a bad album. Showing them all how it`s done.

I've been living with this and 72 Seasons for roughly the same amount of time, and if I'm being honest - and it has been known to happen occasionally- the Metallica album is growing on me, although I agree it needs trimming by about 20 minutes.
Scorched, however, sounds like it was recorded by a band of 20 somethings. It breaks down the door, smacks you in the face, then leaves through the window. Without opening it first. Blitz still sings like he did on Taking Over, and thers not a moment wasted.
72 Seasons came to the end and I thought, about time.
Scorched ended, and I thought.. Already?
Thrash album of the 2020s so far, let alone 2023...

I was a thrash fan from the beginnings of the sub-genre, but Overkill is one of the bands that, unfortunately, I missed out on back in the '80s and '90s. I knew *of* them, but back then, I never heard more than one or two songs, and never bought an album, just to check them out and see what I was missing. I've since learned that I was missing out on one of the *greatest thrash bands* ! Catching up with their discography!

Thanks for this review, Pete. Always make the effort to listen to at least some excerpts from any album included in the weekly new product episodes. Thrash is not a genre that often attracts my attention and mostly unfamiliar with this band but have to say that the opening track on this album made me go back and play it again when it ended. Any album doing that deserves a fuller listen so this one goes into the SoT homework listening library. Your continued effort in providing these weekly new product episodes is appreciated. Thanks again.

They have created The GRINDING Wheel !! 😁😁😁 Overkill is THE most consistent Thrash Metal Band and god bless Blitz for being such a UDO with steroids and his voice keeps getting better over the years ! DD (one of my favourites bass players ever), Dave Linsk (great solos always), The Skull crunching the rhythm guitars and a fenomenal drummer Jason Bittner (one of the best on the scene nowadays). 🤘🤘🤘

  • @gwts1171

Overkill is one of the best bands in the genre. Blitz sounds great here, as always! I like 72 Seasons more than most seem to, but Scorched easily surpasses it for me. Like Pete said - no filler at all. Thanks for the video!!

Only got it yesterday, 1 listen so far and its Kick Ass! Like you said they don't reinvent the wheel, but with every new album you get a new set of mag rims, a full tread change, and shiny new hubcaps with lotsa chrome! Plus Travis Smith has his best Overkill cover painting yet. 9.5 outa ten for me on this one.

Another amazing album from these legends. Going back to Ironbound in 2010 they've been on ridiculous run of great releases and this keeps the streak going. Having Dave and Derek as a guitar duo for over 20 years really gives them a continuity and is part of why they continue to put out stellar albums. Not a bad song on here and no signs of slowing down!

This is the first Overkill album I've bought since The Years of Decay, so it's been a while, LOL. I can't believe they are still releasing albums this good, and more importantly, albums that are true to the band's sound from 30 years ago.

.., the band's twentieth studio effort, having released their first album: "Feel The Fire" in 1985 (OVER KILL are often referred to as the energizer bunnies, though with aging key members: Bobby 'Blitz' Ellsworth: vocals and D.D Verni: bass) both being the longevity factors and contributing songwriting, masterminds of the outfit! ..
OVER KILL (hailing from New Jersey, USA) is my numero uno or major favourite amongst most acts around (in reference to those from other American States, countries: Canada, Germany, England and so on) of the Thrash Metal genre, having heard bucket loads of bands and enjoying many varied offerings in the last 30+ years
.., one of the undisputed Thrash Metal music outfits, outside of the Big 4 (hailing from the Garden State of New Jersey) and one of the finest from a genre, having it's emergence in other parts of the world ..
.., OVER KILL (the elements comprising of strong compositional musicianship, a unique stylistic vocal approach and witty to intelligent lyrics) has a ballsy attitude and energy that's unsurpassed in which is derivative from the Black Sabbath'sh and most notably; core-early or innovative Punk influences, that's a bit obvious throughout all of their releases .
.., beginning their career as a four-piece and evolving into a five-piece with preferably a twin-guitar attack (i've enjoyed all of the musicians, since the departure of Skates - drums and Gustafson - guitar) continuing the development and direction, on the burner of an undefeated formula ..
.., releasing material (EP's, Cover songs and Albums from 1985 and still to this day, playing local circuits and internationally) their initial years: 1987 - 1994 are those that i'm very fond of... Though, i'd lost some interest in the movement between 1996 - 2012 (there wasn't much lacklustre on the wealth of stuff; they had as offerings) during that timeframe .
.. my re-kindled interest began in 2014 into 2019 (as the band had in the previous years passing, self-produced most of their efforts) and working previously with Alex Perialas in the company of the Zazula family (Megaforce Records), Terry Date and Andy Sneap .....
.. there are albums that carry great sounding hidden bonuses (with one having a memorable listed tribute): a beautifully arranged instrumental piece, prepared for guitarist: Chris Oliva ("r.i.p") of the band: Savatage and those delivering the OVER KILL concept themes, my utmost fave being the second of the lot: "The Nightmare Continues" .
.., amongst my favourite mascots (IRON MAIDEN's Eddie, MEGADETH's Vic') OVER KILL's Chaly is also at the top of my list ! .....
My favorite albums are in this specific order of a re-visit!
    1. "The Years of Decay"
    (1989)
    2. "Taking Over"
    (1987)
    3. "W.F.O"
    (1994)
    4. "From the Underground and Below"
    (1997)
    5. "Under the Influence"
    (1988)
    6. "Feel the Fire"
    (1985)
    7. "Horrorscope"
    (1991)
    8. "I Hear Black"
    (1993)
    9. "White Devil Armory"
    (2014)
    10. "The Grinding Wheel"
    (2017)
"Scorched" amounts to possess a slightly appealing touch than that of "The Wings of War" and picks up as to where "The Grinding Wheel" left-off with drummer: Jason Bittner [ex-Shadows Fall] seemingly fitting into more of a groove, there are songs (such as "Goin Home" and "Won't be Comin Back") that takes it's residence in your head (similar to 'Keeper' from "ReliXIV") more than those of two released promo singles: 'The Surgeon' and 'Wicked Place'
"Scorched" earns it's place in the number 11 spot of my own all-time favorite listings!

It’s really crazy to me how people are saying the new Overkill album is so much better than the new Metallica record and how it blows it away. They were both released on the same day, but that’s about the only comparison you can make. Most people want to slam Metallica and throw shade on them by saying they are rehashing older stuff and they are just washed up and need to retire. You cannot listen to this new overkill album and not say the same thing about them. The new Metallica is better in just about every way production lyrics and yes dear, I say it music obviously, Metallica is going to have more money to have a bigger budget to make a better produce album, but still the dynamics, and the sound is so much better than the overkill record. The lyrics are more relatable and more impactful, and even though it may sound rehearsed. I prefer the Metallica rehash the sound to the same old overkill thrashybluesy approach. To each his own I guess but it sounds very crazy to me to praise this overkill record and want to crap on 72 seasons.

    • @ronaldeccles5147
      @ronaldeccles5147 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree - the Metallica album is clearly better than the Overkill one for me. I am disappointed with the Overkill one - I thought it would be much better. I listen to it thinking their last few albums are better, and have gone back to those and I am now sure of it.
I am also from the outlook that says Overkill and Testament in the 2000s is where its at - that they have excelled in that period. I really don't see this at the standard that has been there.

    • @ericsilverado7757

@@ericsilverado7757 If you stopped writing the same old tired stuff that keeps being said and actually listened to stuff, you would notice that 72 Seasons is in fact a really good album - and Scorched isn't. That is how I see it Metallica have come up with some really good songs and mostly Overkill haven't - it is quite boring heaviness.
A lot of people had written or convinced themselves before the event of the idea Overkill would be the better album, and I would have thought that - more due to how good they would do, rather than Metallica doing badly.
Metallica have a reputation for not delivering, and Overkill for doing so in recent times. I really don't think that is what has happened this time, and I have listened to both enough to have a clear view of them.

@@ronaldeccles5147 Lol. Apparently you've missed the fact that 72 Seasons is the first Metallica album to NOT hit #1 since like, ever. Its general consensus by now young bruh. Metallica has officially lost it. I myself feel they lost it right after And Justice. Or at the very least became a completely different band in both style and delivery...for the worse.

OverKill is a weird band for me and maybe someone can help me out here. I had the first three albums and liked them, but have nothing since. They dropped off the radar for me mainly I think due to geography.
Living in Philly, OverKill played here frequently in the 80's. And when i say frequently, it is not a gross exaggeration to say that I think I saw them 10 times in a short period of time. It really felt like they opened for EVERYONE that came through Philly, especially at the old Trocadero Theater or City Gardens in Trenton.
Something just got old really quick with OverKill for me. How do I check them out again? Start at the new record or look for something different?

New one is killer-I'd have no issue saying start there, or Ironbound, or The Wings of War, their last one.

Does it mean that you didnt hear Years of Decay and Horrorscope if you have only first three? :) Of course these two albums kill. Albums from 90s and 00s had some experiments. And 2010 was a new beginning for Overkill.
So Ironbound and The Electric Age are the best albums from 2010s.

I would go all out on the discography and if something doesn't suit your taste at least jump to another decade... The 2000's albums are really good and they all kind of go together. I'm a big fan of Killbox 13 and Relixiv breathes down your neck. The most variety you're gonna get is probably the 90's run, where you have something like WFO that's very Anthrax-ish- Among the Living period, or I Hear Black which is maybe the least thrashy but still satisfyingly heavy. 96-99 had some unique releases that are hard to categorize. Different on each release... I'm really fond of this 90's run, though. 2010's Ironbound is kind of unanimous with fans and the next few albums sound a little similar. Whereas before each consecutive album might have had different production styles, guitar tones, etc.- kind of like Motorhead in the 90's and 2000's. The Grinding Wheel is my favorite from last decade...

The new record has alot that reminds me of 80's Overkill. Killbox 13 had those vibes too. Every Overkill album good but there's about 7 out of the 20 albums that are great. Taking Over is one of the greatest thrash albums ever imho.
