I legit don't understand what problems people have with this game. I'm sad the ball catching QTE is gone, but it's still fun as hell!
Imo there are quite a few things. The game is fun with friends but thats about it. The solo content in the game can be completed so quickly and has no depth compared to its predecessor, its just sad. Along with this the entire content of the game is the same thing, all cups are the same thing, so without friends to keep the fun going its get stale pretty fast. Another thing people are pissed about is how much content they left out from the previous installment. From only ten characters, no sidekicks(All having unique shots, passes, and more), the maps just being smaller and basic without hazards like lava, or flying objects in the level to change it up. I think more people including myself are more mad about it being a straight downgrade(aside from graphics and animations) from Mario Strikers Charged. Also the gear system they added is pretty cool though.

From my experience on GameCube (haven’t played any newer strikers so it might not correlate) it’s easier to do pass play by yourself, which is what Puffer was doing when he was solo. Playing with two or more people on your team will require more spacial awareness and from the looks of it, there was not a lot of that going on 💀
Plus a certain someone’s decision making is a bit questionable at times oop
