Thanks. KiwiRail are only running one return service a day from Auckland to Whangarei. Before the cyclone came I heard they were planning on adding a return service but it never happened. Hopefully once tonnage builds up on NAL they'll add another service.
At this point in time, I'm not sure what the plan is with the line north of Kauri up to Otiria or whether or not they will build the branch out to Marsden Point. But if they do decide to start work on the line again then I doubt it would be completed anytime soon.
There is one train a day between Auckland and Whangarei. The shunt to Kauri does either ione or two trips depending on the traffic. There is no work going on North of Kauri. This has been stopped until a final decision is made on the Oakleigh Marsden Point link.

They're scheduled to run three trips to Kauri a day but sometimes it's only two and rarely one.
