A HUGE missed lore opportunity in Overwatch 2!

- The Mirror Watch event has been one of the most fun and overall successful limited-time game modes we have seen in Overwatch 2
Many of us, including myself, seemed very keen on seeing some of the changes in those events make their way to the main game. So, overall, it was a success.
But...
Blizzard, when you do an event like this, where you serve us this twist on the existing heroes, on the canon lore, like you did with Starwatch and this time around with Mirrorwatch, WE NEED LORE. Let's have a look.

I remember being so eager to hear or read how the lore would be reversed, and while I didn’t expect it to be super extensive, I still couldn’t help but feel a bit let down by the incredibly vague details that were given by voice lines. Truly a missed opportunity.
Think we could have got a small bit of what changing in lore to change these heros paths
I expected a comic like how Starwatch got, or maybe a short cinematic in the mode like the Cosmic Crisis event :c they could have given hints are canon lore with this mirrorverse....
I don't get how they didn't make any lore for this event. This is literally THE BEST event to have lore for! How did DF become the leader of Overwatch? Where are Jack and Reyes? In Winston still on the Moon?? So many questions, but no answers :c it's truly a missed opportunity. GREAT VIDEO!!!
Doomfist actually works well as a hero instead of villain. He's a good guy in Starwatch too.

I personally think the key difference between the two timelines is where Winton and Hammond landed. I think in this timeline Hammond and Winton swapped places, Hammond designed Tracers chrono accelerator and winton crashed in Australia.
Another difference could have been that Moria had a conscience or was likely dead thus giving vengeance no reason to become mercy as there was no negative role model for her to take warning from. Without Moria I think mercy would have gone down this darker path.
Still hoping we get a Mirrorwatch sequel season sometime in 2025
a mini story like the fantasy roleplay season would have been totally fine, or a logbook where you unlock entries like in the few pve missions they released, but I did want something
So feel free to correct me at any point, but based on the mode, skins, and my own guesses, I think I have an idea of what the lore of Overwatch’s Mirror verse may look like. He is part 1 involving tanks, while the replies include DPS and Supports respectively. At any rate, here are some of my ideas:
TANKS
- D.va: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she joins the Junkers after the fall of the Korean military. Though maybe, if the campaign is worth anything, she may join Talon after revealing that SHE was the one who sabotaged MEKA.
- Doomfist: Confirmed as Overwatch’s Strike Commander. And honestly, that’s enough said.
- Junker Queen: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she may be either dead after losing against the former Junker King,or is under the leadership of Vishkar - which is its own can of worms.
- Mauga: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he becomes an Overwatch agent, though it would be funnier if he joins Blackwatch in particular. However, what’s more important is his relationship with Bap now, and in this case, Mauga may be chasing after Bap in order to save him.
- Orisa: Confirmed as joining Null Sector. However, much like with Genji, she may be an apprentice of Zen.
-Ram: Confirmed to have died. Though I don’t think that’s the end all. If anything, we may actually see a revived Ram under the Iris' influence (think Zen’s glowing arms) and assist Overwatch to put a stop to Zen (who most likely put the hit on him tbh)
- Rein: Confirmed to have joined Talon. As for his reasons, it may be due to him falling from grace after the Omnic War. However, what’s interesting is that he doesn’t appear to always be in control, at least in the gamemode.So, I’m guessing he is also under Mercy and Ana's control as well. (think Darth Vader + Bane)
- Roadhog: Status is unknown at the moment. And I’ll be honest, I don’t think there is much to work with. However, as a fun thought, perhaps he may actually be the new king of Junkertown.
- Sigma: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that may be with Overwatch as a scientist turned field agent. As for his motives, it may be due to his experiment and its success, but then later stolen by Talon. And much like Fenrir for R6 Siege, he may want to make sure that no one will use his life-changing experiments against innocence.
- Winston/Wrecking Ball: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that the pair joins Talon. However, for the sake of being evil, they may end up being horrifying creatures after years of Talon experiments (that of straight up dead for failing Mercy’s expectations)
- Zarya: Confirmed to be a Talon agent. As for motive, that remains seen. However, I suppose it may have to do with Russia and its government. Perhaps they may be a backer, or former backer, of Talon.
DAMAGE
- Ashe: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she remains living the high life, never forming the Deadlock gang. And much like the comments with Zarya, Ashe may be connected with Overwatch as a backer thanks to Widow and Gerard. As for reasons to fight, that remains seen, but something tells me it may involve Cassidy (more on that later)
- Bastion: Confirmed to be part of Gwishin. Though it may also be a part of the Null Sector group after the collapse of MEKA and all of Korea as a whole.
- Cassidy: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he is just a simple rancher, never actually joining either side. In fact, he may even be employed by Ashe as a farm hand. At least until he shows his skills in firearms, and that may be due to saving Ashe for Talon assassins. As such, thanks to Ashe’s endorsement, Cass may join Overwatch, maybe even lead Blackwatch, in exchange for Sombra keeping his identity safe; unlike the Sombra we know who threatened to expose Cass’ identity.
- Echo: Confirmed to be an agent of Blackwatch. While not sure of much else, a fun idea is that Echo is Sombra’s creation, alongside Mina Liao, to assist in Blackwatch’s operations.
- Genji: Confirmed to be a Junker Ninja after his “death” by his brother. As for why he died, perhaps it was from a coup attempt as Genji was the next in line to ruling the Shimada clan. And as for who fixes him, I bet it is Symmetra. As for what happens next, that remains seen. However, I suspect he may may end up joining Overwatch still and not Talon (more on that later; I think like Kiryu from the Yakuza series)
- Hanzo: Confirmed to be part of the Hashimoto clan. As for how and why, it may have to do with spite as Genij was named the new leader of the Shimada clan. As such, he joins forces with the Hashimoto clan and sells out the clan for a position in power- may have gotten some help as well from Kiriko. And as food for thought, he may take up Talon’s offer to empower the clan and wipe Genji off the map as the sole survivor, thus being an illegitimate leader.
- Junkrat: Status is unknown at the moment. And honestly, not much else is known. Though, as for some food for thought, it would be interesting for him to become Roadhog’s chief of police.
- Mei: Status is unknown at the moment, and honestly my least favorite to play against. And honestly, not much else can be truly said. However, a fun idea would be if she went full Joker/Mr.Freeze after the Antarctic incident. And as a bonus, Mercy would be the one who has caused it…. for reasons.
- Pharah: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she never exists after Ana’s fall and Sam’s death. If anything, she may be Widow’s child now- which that’s going to open a whole different can of worms!
- Reaper: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he was a former Talon agent now turned vigilante (basically Baptiste, but more Batman-like)
- Sojourn: Confirmed to be a Talon agent. And that’s pretty much it.
- Soldier 76: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he is a Talon agent after leaving Overwatch. As for motives and other reasons, that remains to be seen.
- Sombra: Confirmed to be an Overwatch agent. Though for added flavor, she may even end up being the creator of Echo and recruits Ashe/Cass into the fold
- Symmetra: Confirmed to be a Junker. And to add some spice, she may have been the one who fixes Genji, though not much else can be thought of.
- Torbjorn: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he is a mere Talon engineer. If anything, Bastion and Torb may still have a relationship as well, though I suspect it to be less empathetic and more power hungry. And that may be due to the fall of the Lindhelm name, and him trying to bring it back through force.
- Tracer: Confirmed to be a Talon agent after the failures of the warping experiments from Overwatch, vowing revenge for essentially losing much of her life (think like Backroom’s lore), Not only that, but SHE was the one who also killed off Ram!
- Widow: Confirmed to be an Overwatch agent. And from what it seems, she may still have Gerard, unlike Ana. However, she may have only ended up joining Overwatch after losing her eye against Ana- probably from that assassination attempt I mentioned earlier involving Cass and Ashe.
- Venture: Status is unknown at the moment. And honestly, that’s about it as they are too new.
SUPPORTS
- Ana: Confirmed to be Talon’s arch-commandant, or commander-in-chief. As for her motives, it may have to do with the death of Sam thanks to Overwatch. However, that may not be the end as I suspect that she may be 'roiding as well, and this is due to her ultimate. And in a way, it makes sense as Mercy may have introduced it to her as a way of feeling powerful in a hopeless situation- which is probably the same tactic she is using on Rein as well.
- Baptise: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he is a Talon agent after abandoning Overwatch. And much like what was mentioned in Mauga’s case, he is in deep stuff and won’t leave. Thus, unlike Bap running for Mauga, Mauga is now trying to save Bap. However, that seems to be mostly it.
- Brig: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she is a simple Talon paladin. However, to add some spice to the mix, she may be Rein's handler while Ana is his owner. As for her connection with Bastion and Torb, that remains to be seen.
- Illari: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she is involved with a different faction involving an eclipse. However, it is just too early to call.
- Kiriko: Confirmed to be a member of the Hashimoto clan. As for how that came to be, it most likely has to do with Hanzo and his coup against the Shimada clan, as well as the killing of Genji. If anything, she may be the one who struck him down as Genji doesn’t seem to be too messed up in comparison. Once done, she most likely remained by Hanzo’s side as a captain of sorts.
- Lifeweaver: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that he may be a rogue Junker in order to join Vishkar. However, not much can be thought of as he is also too new.
- Lucio: Status is unknown at the moment. And honestly, I really don’t know- maybe an orchestra player who later joins Talon?
- Mercy: Confirmed to be the leader of Talon. And that’s pretty much it, or at least on the surface level. Otherwise, I have a feeling she may be the ultimate mastermind all across the mirrorverse.
- Moira: Status is unknown at the moment. However, it is most likely that she is a part of Overwatch’s medic team. However, unlike now, she actually has ethical standards- one she most likely saw broken when around Mercy during their time together. Funny enough, that’s about it from me, but I’d also like to think she she may be the embodiment of the "I'm a healer, but *gun* " meme.
- Zen: Confirmed to be the new leader of Null Sector, and from what it looks like, it may be less of the resistance/rebel group and more of a cult rather than a rebel group. This would explain Ram’s departure from the group and his eventual assassination- which may or may not have been organized by Zen himself as to keep the group in check. And much like Ram in the current universe, he joins Talon with Mercy.
the game needs lore, the game needs a story mode, the game needs more fun experiments, and a way to have that fun consistently.
i wonder where i've heard this before? i think there was a game that came out in 2016 with those same issues. can't remember the name though. overseen, maybe? idk.
Feels like these kinds of events need a pve mission or atleast anything related to archives would be nice to see from Blizzard.
I was also hoping the mirror watch skins had special interactions that fit that mirror watch lore. it is very bizarre for mirrwatch skins to have old lore interactions where it does not make sense. Widow had one with Tracer and that was cool but hearing her saying "There goes your othere eye" On the ana skin where she did not lose her eye and Widow did? It is strange.
Their spawn interaction even stayed the same.
Ana still says " Looks like Talon failed another mission, Going soft? Widow still replies by saying "Don't speak to me unless you want to lose your other eye.
They really less than half way with the mirror watch season.
An the lack of cosmetics higlight intros and emotes Venture got for their release? Up to now everyone had at least a couple of legendaries a bunch of emotes and victory poses. But Venture got the bare minimum. Seems like new heros from here won't get legendaries on release from here on out.
Mauga also didn't have any epic or legendary skins other than the one in the battle pass and the one in the shop.
@@tau-5794 Well yeah but at least he had legendaries. That is my point. Venture may be the first hero to launce with no Legendaries at all.
I would not say anything if they had a battle pass legendary and a shop legendary like mauga did.

Yeah, I'm sad they didn't go more in-depth with this theme.
In general, I think it would be cool if they added a lore index in the game. There's a ton of info about the universe, but it's everywhere else except in the game itself.
As a lore enjoying person, it's been kinda frustrating to see people notice NOW (not this channel specifically, just in general... looking at some of the Porsche collab reactions) how important lore is to OW. It's not just about comics or shorts, lore is a backbone which distinguishes OW's universe from any other universe. No lore =/= no characters or maps having names, looks, or personalities.
When the layoffs happened in January we lost not only Gavin JF but ALSO Maddie Buckingham, who was the lore historian for OW. Combined with the entire PvE team being let go, it means that there's only three remaining full-time writers for OW, and we have no idea what the state of the relationship between Team 4 and Blizzard's SFD department (who also make a lot of lore) is.
There's going to be a lot of missed opportunities like this in the near future, and it's deeply frustrating to see. Everyone seems to think lore = the cancelled story missions and nothing else, but they're also important to things like this! Mirrorwatch is such a blast to play, too. Really could've gone from great to amazing if it had a comic.

Here is what I would think of the lore of overwatch shattered glass
Jack Morrison wanted power so he founded sg overwatch and the founding members were torbjorn but he became a robot due to an incident , Reinhardt , sojourn but became a mutant wolf after she accidentally tripped into a vat of mutagen , Ana , Gabriel Reyes but he never left overwatch so mercy experimented on Reyes thus he became a floating skeleton on fire and Ana and doomfist but doomfist saw the twisted things overwatch was doing so he rounded up ex overwatch members Moira,sombra,widowmaker and non overwatch members like sigma,Mauga,Baptiste and many many more people to found a heroic organization named talon and talon would swear on their oath to protect the world from the evil overwatch but that’s like half of the lore
Isn't that not the case though? You can see it's not evil overwatch vs good talon it's talon members becoming OW members and vice versa, so this wouldn't work here.

For me, this event, and in a way season 10, feels flat. Maybe because it’s just too close to April Fools and the blending of abilities is a little too close to what that event is all about, but the lack of lore or even a short story/comic makes the event feel slapped together.
I’m just hoping that the reason that this event feels meh is because better things are one the way, but I’ve been telling myself this for years now.

Yeah, without lore it just felt like the April Fools event (especially right after April Fools), hence why I personally like the April Fools event a bit more
1000% agreed. Kinda disappointing for what was otherwise an amazing event
Love the channel but I have to disagree.
Just drop the lore any more. We had fun with what little they dropped but with PvE gone, there’s no reason to it. We won’t see lore changes reflected in game other than maybe an off-handed reference map doodad or spray. Magic didn’t exist until it did. Soldier 76 was a commander and then a mercenary and maybe now a commander again.
The lore is negligible at this point. It’s a casualty of Bobby. Send it your thoughts and prayers, mourn what could have been, and move on. Let the cohesion be whatever’s in your mind, because the alternative is letting Blizzard make concrete lore.
And the history there has become spotty in recent years.
