Sponging is an easy way to create realistic foliage or flowers. Especially if someone has trees they don't like, sponging on top can improve them immensely.
So love and appreciate this wonderful tutorial! So grateful for the tip of the razor/tape as that was a light bulb moment. Can’t wait to paint this with my daughter. Thank you so much!
I've been watching watercolor demos for four years and this is the first one of yours I've seen. So glad I did. Its the best and easiest to follow one I've ever seen. Thank you sooo much!
Glad it helped, Maureen. I have several videos on sponging and the one on painting shadows has also made watercolor easier for a lot of students. I hope you love watercolor as much as I do.
Thank you so much! My in-person classes are starting next week, so I'll be posting new videos for each lesson. You will find the free lesson with handouts at watsonwatercolor.com/
I use the same thickness of wash that I would apply with a brush. I usually wet the sponge first and squeeze out all the water, then dip the sponge in whatever wash I'm using. I use a tiny piece so it doesn't soak up a ton of paint.
@@vharrald Your channel looks great! The more we get people painting, the better the mood of the nation. I do my voice overs with just my iphone recorder, and while it's not the best, it works okay.
Hi Linda, this one is still on the old website - www.debwatson.org/p/landscape-composition-tips-for-improving-your-landscapes. I'm trying to move them all over to the new site but it's taking time.
In the 'with sponging' painting, the background trees on the right were done with a sponge, and in the 'without sponging' the trees were painted on with a brush. The sponging gives you very realistic looking foliage edges - leafy - easily and quickly!
Hi Carol, I usually teach online and at the York Art Association. I'll be teaching a physical class there this winter, limited to eight people with masks and social distancing. I have a zoom class on Tuesday mornings now and you're welcome to pop in for a free class to see if you like it. If you're interested, email me at deb@debwatson.org. And thanks for posting.
Wonderful demo! So relaxing to watch.
Thank you so much, Ruma!
Lovely painting tutorial. The masking tape on the barn was a great tip, thank you!
Still the best instruction for watercolour
I’ve seen yet.
Thank you Deb.
Thanks again, Beryl!
That sponging takes the trees to a new level.

You're welcome, Kim! I felt the same way the first time I saw it done, just be careful with razor blades.
I am so grateful to have found you. The way you explain things make me realize that I can really do this.
You can do it! And thank you for posting.
Thank you Deb! I'm going to try this. Great lesson!
Really nice to c this done with and without the sponging - Tks!
Very distinctive touch.
Thanks
Glad you think so!

Thank you for the kind words, Pat! I try to keep things simple and explain as I go.
Wow! Another awesome tutorial. Thanks for sharing this ma’am. ☺️💕👍🏻
This is an excellent tutorial.... Thanks 😊I just wish your paints and water were also in shot as this would be really useful to see
Thank you! I do put the palette in some, but I'll try to include at least a small shot of it in the future videos. Great suggestion and comment!
loved this tutorial on a country barn thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
I enjoyed all the tips and tricks you suggest! Thanks for sharing
You're very welcome, Joy. Red barns are a classic in landscape.
Yay! Will give this a try 😱
Have fun!
Great tip in using the razor edge to tear and get the correct angles for your masking tape, that’s a keeper.
With a little practice, you can mask out an buildings in a flash. It's so convenient.
You teach good.and have a wonderful technique. I wouldve never figured out about the natural sponge.
Sponging works great for landscapes, and so easy!
What a beautiful scene - so peaceful - which we surely need right now!
Thank you, Linda! I agree.
How pretty! And thx so much for the clever masking tape technique. Why can’t I come up with clever ideas? 😂 🥰
Thanks, Alicia. Masking tape is very useful stuff with watercolor.
I followed this tutorial this week and it turned out really nicely! Thank you for sharing!
I'm so glad! It warms my heart to see students turn out art that they're happy with.
A real treat to watch. Thanks!
My pleasure, John. Thanks for watching!
I do like your easy to understand realistic voice over and your lovely natural voice. Thank you
Thank you, Mary. It's nice of you to say!
Great tips in this. It's gorgeous!
Thanks so much!
So many great tips Deb ❤ Beautiful
Thank you!
So so pretty
Thanks, Catherine! Loose flowers this week and a simple watercolor landscape with a river next week, so stay tuned.
I'm a beginner who struggles, some great tips and love the sponge technique.
Glad it helped, Maureen. I have several videos on sponging and the one on painting shadows has also made watercolor easier for a lot of students. I hope you love watercolor as much as I do.
Lovely painting tutorial!

This is beautiful and so helpful. Thank you
You are so welcome, Wendy. Thank you for posting!
I've been wanting to do a barn scene in the country mated and framed large painting to put above my sofa
Barns are always a great subject - I'd say do a small one first to work out the bugs and then go for it with the larger one.
Wow.awesome tips
Thanks a lot, Dianna. It's hard to go wrong with red barns and green landscape.
FABULOUS 👌
Thank you, Craig. I have many red barn videos and another popular one in classes that I'll be putting on soon.
So beautiful

Hi thank you for tutoring us. I really need to learn how mix colors and keep them constant
Sticking to three to five colors for the entire painting will give you more professional looking results. I'll be doing a video on color soon.
Wonderful 👏. 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent instruction.
Thanks Lynn! Hope you're well and painting!
Deb, this is beautiful 🤩 I’m new to your channel 👍🏼
Welcome, Mario. I just finished the winter session of classes and will be working on new videos for a few weeks.
I like the sponging method deb... please explain how much water you use with your sponge.. thank you

@@DebWatson thank you Deb... that really means a lot.
Can I ask where I find the patterns for each lesson? Love each one I've watched so far but would love to give them a try?

In the end of the video what did you mean by “with sponging and without”?
In the 'with sponging' painting, the background trees on the right were done with a sponge, and in the 'without sponging' the trees were painted on with a brush. The sponging gives you very realistic looking foliage edges - leafy - easily and quickly!
I like the version without sponging more❤
Thanks for posting! Every painting turns out unique because we all like different things. I like it without sponging more, too.
@@DebWatson its always a lesson. Trying things out gives us other perspectives
