Transformers G1 Autobot Commander Optimus Prime 40th Toy Review

- This video review is for Hasbro's generation one Transformers 40 years Optimus Prime. Basically an reissue of G1 Optimus Prime done in cartoon colors. This video includes unboxing and side by side comparison, photo gallery
The trailer for this reissue is actually a completely new tooling. According to Evan Brooks, who is a designer at Hasbro, the original mold was lost/damaged which is why the 2018 reissue didn't come with one.
@RileyTNTlego The trailer is identical to the 2002 Takara collection release. I had it in the original cut of the video but cut it out because it ran longer. With the exception of the anti-aircraft gun. Even the missiles are the same. I cut that part out to. 😮💨
Love the opening of this video.
@@matthewgaudet4064 Thanks! I knew true fans would get it.
I love the opening to this. I love all your videos sir.
@@nathanbarger3449 Thank you, I appreciate that!
It’s on sale now for about $53. Definitely worth it for that price. I like it more than I thought I would, I like the cartoon colors without worrying about stickers falling off over time.
I picked this up for $52 at Walmart. They’re having some kind of sale. Disappointed by the lack of stickers and the colors, but I really wanted the trailer. Thanks for all your hard work!
@Coffeebibber Holy Vector Sigma $52 Sweet!!! Thanks for watching.
@@80sTransfromersFan I broke down and got him too when I saw he was $53. The box reproduction alone was worth it at that price lol!
I had a moment of nostalgia the other day over the old G1 Transformers I had when I was young. I went looking for cheap knock offs and saw they had these 40th re-issues at Walmart. I impulse bought this Optimus and the Soundwave. Then I bought a cheap original Ratchet on eBay. Man I know I am really going to miss a few of the differences from the g1 die cast Optimus Prime I got for Christmas way back then but this is pretty cool. Might see if anyone is selling decal reprints to put the decals inside the trailer. Yeah, I know they were going for cartoon accuracy with this 40th but man, that trailer needs the decals in my opinion.
The terrible wheels etc, I can live with I think.
@0525ohhwell All of the reissues have the exact same diecast part as the originals. You can find sticker sheets on Ebay or Toyhax for your Optimus. And congratulations on your purchases!
Wow. And that’s why I watch reviews. I am not hurting for a another Optimus prime. I do like the way it looks in robot mode. I’m not sure if I’m gonna get one or not.
@scoobysnacks3740 I know this version isn't for everyone, but I like it.
The review I was waiting for!!! Great one George!!! I will also get this version (if I find it for a decent price in Europe) but I wonder, why we didn't get a missing link version with cartoon accurate trailer or a cartoon accurate Optimus paint deco? Obviously all of it is an evil scheme to "force us" buy the same figures again and again :) I am waiting for a missing link soundwave at somepoint to see if we also get 2 versions and what differences will it have from the 40th anniversary!
@tassosk.5414 Toy manufacturers are always on the quest for more money. Thanks for watching and commenting!
So many decent to great Optimus Prime toys out.
@thecheese4255 Yes, and they hit us all at once.
Between the lack of chrome and lack of sticker sheets I’ve felt the cartoon accurate reissues (hound, Starscream, hot rod etc) have been cost cutting measures, even the last batch of reissues started to lack stickers by the time Blaster came out…. It’s cartoon accurate but doing it that way cuts the cost of chrome and stickers at the same time.
@musiccityworshipvideos I agree for the most part. As far as the reissues go, they start to print on the sticker decoration towards the end.
Found him on pulse today. I was really hoping he came with a hat though 😂.
@@Prime-collector 😂😂😂😂😂 I'm a sucker for another Optimus Prime!
@@80sTransfromersFan me too. Best figure ever is g1 Optimus.
It really does look like the cartoon. I like it. I only wished they used the ML re-tooling/re-engineering for this figure because that one was amazing in what they did modernizing a G1. I like the retro anime/cartoon styling. It's different. The original is great and this one is too. At the very least, they could've given Prime the new ML rifle! After 40 years, they corrected it so he can hold it properly but they stuck with the old one. Oh well. :D
@@CedricCheng I think that's the game plan. To hit the fan from both sides. Takara Missing Link and Hasbro G1 cartoon colors. 💸
The Return of Optimus Prime confirms that even if the bot has lost its spark due to damage or lack of energon, as long as their body haven't been melted down, there's still an imprint of their spark in the body. His spark can be recharge as long as he has a working spark chamber and their spark can be reinitialized using the original spark imprint from his body. That's what I thought happened to both bots&cons after the Ark crashed and was repaired in the 1st G1 episode. So Teletran1 can recharge their bodies&spark even it had gone to stasis lock. Wished I kept my original G1 in good condition. Unfortunately this item's typically pre-order soldout. IMO, the trailer could be a mobile space bridge that has a limited range like SkyWarp. This allows the Autobots to travel across the planet instead of taking days to get there from the Ark. If the trailer hides in a pocket subspace dimension, then it can open a portal from that pocket dimension and exit to its destination like in another continent.
For Megatron Missing Link, maybe mod it for additional joints to transform like NewAge especially for the waist&legs.
@Exaris79 I am so looking forward to a Missing Link Megatron!
Awesome review, I immediately put a rub sign on mine 😊
Hey. Jusr ordered one of these in the Uk for £75 so thankyou for the grest review
@richardbourne6660 No worries, cheers.
i hope we get a ironide and prowl ones like this optimus prime
@supergamerandplushshow2 Yes! My most wanted is Ultra Magnus at #1, then Wheeljack a combiner other than Devastator.
Thanks George! They def cheaper out but that’s just how it goes these days.
@evsportsman5478 It's not bad, I just have so many G1 Optimus Primes it's really easy for me to tell the difference. To me, it's still higher quality than the Chinese knock-off.
I believe they done a great job remaking this retro toy, better than a movie remake i can tell you that man! The details like the wheels doesn't turn that great etc i believe are kinda nitpicks for me! As a kid i didn't own the original and this time now its like a dream come true,i am going to pick mine in a couple of days and i am hype as hell! They didn't show much attention to this details because it is a reissue of the classic for collector's.The biggest complaint i have about this set is the fact that they have it close to 100 euros on my region, really close to the studio series 86 which was 110 from hasbro pulse and also bought it! The price tag should be to 60-65 i believe because it is the retro representation and not a modern one! For me in general is like a love letter from hasbro and i supported them with all my heart big price tag or not! Awesome review man thanks for sharing with us! 😉
@TwesomE I really love this version of Optimus Prime as well! I. The review I have to be honest and talk about what I see. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine, and thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers!
Despite having had the Commemorative Series reissue back in the late 00s to mid 2010s (had to sell it and my Commemorative Series reissue Hot Rod)...I don't particularly have that much of an affinity toward the G1 Optimus Prime figure. Though I did get the Legacy United G1 Universe Optimus Prime...and I like that lil' mofo, so maybe I'll consider gettin' the Missinglink version.
That lack of affinity? Mainly because my first Optimus as a kid was 1988's Powermaster Optimus Prime, as a late 11th birthday present (my mom had to put it on layaway, and the scheduling simply meant it'd be in my mitts like two days after my birthday). As such, that Takara Transformers Legends LGEX God Ginrai box set - I could've just went after their LG35 Super Ginrai by itself, but the box set did some stuff better - was my modern mainline update of PMOP. A huge boon considering that I missed both Takara's God Ginrai reissue AND Hasbro's Commemorative Series PMOP "with Apex Armor" set (which was just a repacked Takara G1 God Ginrai, mold changes and all). And with MPG9 Super Ginrai and MPG14 Godbomber on the way...whooo...
That ain't bad at all for a G1 Optimus with the trailer...$75 is definitely a more reasonable thing then $50 for just the figure itself and no trailer. Huh. Tempting.
@DragoonMS Hasbro and Takara are due for a Powermaster Optimus Prime reissue. Also, the Missing Link Optimus is awesome! And this Optimus Prime is pretty cool as well.

MISSING LINK... The GOAT!!!!
@@camaradiop3731 🤔🤔🤔
i wish this had incorporated the Missing Link upgrades. It would have been the ultimate G1 tribute with the G1 cartoon colours with the dynamic posing/movement.
@jayquanvo5134 I feel the same way, but Hasbro and Takara aren't going to miss an opportunity to make twice the money.
Does the figure sit properly in the tray without the plastic ties when it's back in the box, on display? Thanks for giving us a look at this guy! I'm really tempted to get him.
@OEAgent01 I'm sorry I haven't tried to repackage it yet.
$75?? That is actually the exact price when you account for inflation. $25 in 1984 is $75 in today’s money.
@Wizard66 Wow, I didn't know that. I was just happy it was under $100.
Neat to see more original G1 figures with toon inspired colors. Even if certain parts like the trailer look a bit plain without the stickers. I’m curious to see see who could be next. Maybe a Galvatron in a darker purple as the prominent color… Or a Megatron…as a online store & Japan exclusive due to toy gun regulations nowadays.
Apparently there’s another change in the repair drone; being that the old Diaclone don’t sit down all the way due to the legs being a bit too long for it now. Just saw someone online demonstrate that, along with showing that reboot Diaclone pilots fit better in it due to the shorter legs on those.
@kaylemathewcomendador6964 Well, as of right, Bombshell and Ramhorn are available in a rwo pack. And apparently, we're getting a G2 tank Masters done in g1 cartoon colors.
You could also pick up a KO and spray the upperlegs white. Then you're already half way there. 😅
@maanjezus8622 The KO's are the same price and higher, and the quality is not nearly as good. You would actually spend more money in the end.
I saw this in Taiwan’s Toystore now
I wish they had a large grey sticker running along the side, which would have covered up the screw holes like the original. I'll stick with my two Takara reissues that have the tampograph shoulder symbols and my Missing Link version. I hope they do a Missing Link for the G1 Dinobots and Soundwave that uses the original style door.
I would love to see any reissue Dinobots!
I was trying to save up for this and 86 prime but lost over 2000 worth of stuff so saving up to replace as much as I can so no figures for months but I want them😭. Great review thanks for sharing just notice cant even put springs in to fire so may just try for a ko cant afford that right now
@davidct1157 The 40th reissue is about the same price as a knock-off and is higher quality even with the tires and missiles not firing. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
@@80sTransfromersFan I can get a ko around 60 with shipping but the 40th well be about 100 plus in Canada
Does the cab have diecast?
@DMSL2007 Yes, the chest and the feet are diecast! The exact same as the original and every reissue ever. It has never been taken out.
@@80sTransfromersFan Thanks!
They knew this would sell out but they cheaped out on tires and trailer not covering screw holes, and no rub heat sticker on top
@@khamla616 I was definitely disappointed in the way it rolls. And the screw holes suck. But the rub sign is supposed to be left out.
Are you getting the G1 Legacy Generation Deluxe Optimus Prime? He's an updated version of the original toy, but with actual heft where the Missing Link didn't incorporate it
Yes, I have it on pre-order from Pulse.
Guess I missed this one. Was traveling back and forth to South Carolina after my brother passed away... :(
Is it available to order anywhere at this point? :(
@fluidsc_ My condolences for your loss. 40th Optimus Prime is currently a Wal-Mart exclusive but will have a limited release on Hasbro Pulse. So you're going to have to keep checking back. Entertainment Earth had a pre-order up for it but has been taken down. I believe that in the future, Optimus will be available on BBTS Amazon and EE. But for now, checking in stores at Wal-Mart is your best option.
@@80sTransfromersFan Thank you for your kind words. Why can I not find this thing? Is it available at all yet? I have tried several times to find this on Walmart's site and it just isn't there.
Will he available on Amazon??
@@leoprimesmatrix I'm not sure.
Hope to see the SS86 Optimus Prime in George's hands soon.
@@BblastedD I have it on pre-order.
Looking forward to it.
I have the SS86 but I need someone to tell me if this reissue is better. It’s a little lower price than SS86, so I might try to find this one instead.
I have the missing link version
@@JNy5873 that's an awesome figure!
Man it's real disappointing that Hasbro cheapened this Anniversary. The 25th Anniversary (which I have) was commemerated better than this one! I get the whole cartoon paint scheme...but nah! I'm good with the original style with all the cool stickers!
@frankiev-tech4630 I totally get what you're saying. I guess I just have wanted to see this redeco of G1 Optimus Prime ever since I was a kid. That and the fact that I love variations of the G1 mold makes this so cool to me. But hey, I do realize that this release is not for everyone. But I've always thought that the 25th anniversary (I also own) is the weakest reissue of the G1 Optimus Prime mold. But I'm a sucker for another Optimus Prime! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@80sTransfromersFan Yeah but it's also the additions like the comic book, DVD, and that talking Autobot insignia! Doesn't have to be the same but you expect fireworks on a 40th anniversary! Hasbro should've been more creative on an icon of a figure! But yeah I enjoyed your enthusiasm on your review! The paint is cool!

Are you going to review the Studio Series 86 Optimus Prime?
The best TH-camr 🩷
@@isisreed-mu5wk I truly appreciate that!
I recently learned my wife’s favorite Transformer is Optimus Prime…I knew there was a reason I married her..lol.
I think Soundwave is about the only perfect Transformer G1 toy. It's perfect in robot and alt mode. Whereas, Optimus Prime is almost perfect except for the gap in his back as you mention. And that the gun sits at an angle, though they fixed that on reissues.
@colt5189 Sideswipe is near perfect. He is strong in both modes.
@@80sTransfromersFan Sideswipe would be the best Missing Link if made.
He has one of the best robot modes, with distinct separate hands and feet not made from alt mode parts, a fantastic head design, a great body shape, great colour mapping, perfect weapon load out (hand weapon, shoulder mounted launcher which are both side swappable for lefties and righties then a hand free), awesome alt mode everyone likes even today.
Then you get the easy repaint to Tigertrack, Red Alert, Deep Cover and Clampdown.
I think he may be revealed next to go alongside his bro, who I believe was made because Spinout is seen as the first TF.
You have to put the insecticons in there also.
Love the review George Optimus prime is one of my favourite characters of all time 👍🏼🤖🤖🤖
@KennyWhitty Optimus is my favorite transformer! And thanks again.
Walmart is the exclusive for g1 transformer because no toys r us in the states
Crazy it’s sold out already.
@Prime-collector I'm not. By it being an adult focused toy, I'm pretty sure this is not produced in quantities as the Studio Series 40th Optimus Prime. So they will probably release a few thousand at a time and measure sales between each release to see if the demand is there. But I'm confident this will have at least two-three more production runs.
Where to buy, cant find it?
@RabidDogEOCF Wal-Mart, but it's currently sold out.
Back in stoc today
Just got this 👍🏼
@@dfjsorbys How do you like it? A lot of people are upset about the lack of stickers and chrome.
Is this a Walmart exclusive?
@kiake75 Yes,for now.
This is unexpected, given that I didn't see any information about it being released. When might Bombshell get released? It seems pathetic that for the 40th Anniversary that we had less figures than last year.
@Electrasound I actually stumbled on it, seeing it in a Facebook G1 Transformers group. I had no idea it was out. Bombshell is out now, also. I've seen people posting him all over social media. And I definitely feel we could have more releases on the 40th anniversary year.
my son wants to get the missing link optimus prime but its to much money online
@jeffbrothers The Missing Link Optimus is not a retail item and is only available online. And yes, it's not cheap, but it is a great toy.

@ashnorris9294 wow really? I think it's pretty cool. What are you most disappointed about?
Something just isn’t right looking at this, the original g1 is just better. I think it’s missing the stickers
@Transformers-fan-kid I have so many G1 Optimus Primes that this was a welcomed change. And now Wal-Mart has dropped the price to $50. I'm thinking about grabbing a second.
The lack of chrome in the entire movie series is very disappointing.
@MikesTek If these figures had the chrome, they would be regular reissue.
You compared earthrise Optimus prime and you said studio series.
@allanegeto7487 Well, while you're pointing out mistakes, that's the Netflix Optimus Prime, not Earthrise.
Amazing seeing "grown a$$ adults " actually saying that they are "disappointed " at a toy. A TOY that many of us have several times over. It's a f@#$ing toy, absolutely NOTHING to be disappointed about!
