- Emrakul, the World Anew is a new Eldrazi dropping with MTG Modern Horizons 3. But the wording of the card can be a little confusing. So I'm going over all the rules you need to know, breaking down exactly what the card does, what it has protection from and how to beat it!
Thanks for watching!

You can tell they tried to decrease the power on this card vs the older versions of it, and it's still totally busted lmao
This is the 2nd stronger version of her. The 1st version, is by far the strongest and the 2nd version of her is the weakest.
pretty much. busted card like many eldrazio.
@@adrien4337 lmao! 🤣 delete this troll comment. You DO KNOW that the protection clause is the ACTIVE turn of that spell or permanent was cast NOT when Emrakul was cast. She is one of the most powerful eldrazi, only dumbasses don't understand how she works (like yourself obviously)
And if you're throwing her in the deck any sane person should be sure the deck has enough mana to support it, so that kiddie/sloppy argument is null.
So how do you deal with Emrakul?
1. Deny that she exists. Close your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears, and ignore the fleshy tendrils as your body mutates.
2. Open your eyes. See Emrakul. You’rmrakul. Be’mrakul!
My first thought on this was Whirlwind Denial, but the blinking is probably the way to go. Maybe Stifle too. I don't like it, but I don't really like any of the Eldrazi - are there no showers in the broken eternities? They're just sweaty as hell...
Stifle only solves half the problem :/ there's still a 12/12 to deal with.
I hate that Solitude is our only hope 😂
I don't understand how this card can be perceived as not good. You cast it to get a big fat Eldrazi plus assuming control of your opponent's board. That's better than the best sweeper. When she leaves, they die. This is designed to be taken advantage of early in Tron or vanilla cast anywhere else. Beautiful design.
@@xportaleerx9287I don't think anyone thinks this card is bad 😂
@@attackoncardboard I'm pre-ordering 4!
That scenario you outlined isn't entirely correct actually, from a rules standpoint.
They'll have control of all your creatures, an Emrakul AND a food token from the underworld cookbook :P
redo the video then
😭
Another special content, thank you! If you can, please address the weird thing going on with Krenko’s Buzzcrusher and how to respond to it. WotC really seems to have gone to far there!
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
RE Buzzcrusher, do you mean the non targeting part?
@@attackoncardboard Yes! That seems like a shortcut, still haven’t found a reason for WotC to make it rely on the text bypassing rules instead of something along the lines of Shadowspear’s activated ability
It was to help against Lotus Field and other lands with Hexproof.
@@attackoncardboard Oh, got it! Thanks again!! But then I’m still confused by the design choice of the card. Wouldn’t it be better to use a “land looses hexproof” kind of effect and retain the targeting, for the sake of clarity? 😅
That sounds like adding more words when you don't need to. Sundering Titan uses the same templating, no targeting required.
If you cast the solitude this turn… and ephemerate that same turn… the game see it as a new object right? So it would now bypass the protection?
It bypasses protection because the "new" Solitude wasn't cast 🙂
@@attackoncardboard Magic is complex lol! Yeah, the "if it was cast this turn" clause just 'feels' different than usual rules text... almost makes you think Emrakul can see what you're up to! Good thing she's not THAT smart!
If you creatureless edicts work, but I guess so does normal counter magic.
How does having Avatar of Woe in play help? Doesn't Emrakul just steal it before entering the battlefield?
Yeah I think I forgot about that part too 😂
Okay what about a stifle or the newer LCI merfolk? Since its on the stack does it not have the static ability of protection yet?
Stifle counters the "Gain control of creatures" triggered ability, but the rest of the card still stands.
@JudgingFtW did a video covering a similar situation with Tishana's Tidebinder and Ulamog - DDR#696. Basically Tishana's "loses all abilities" effect only kicks in if you counter the triggered ability of a permanent. While on the stack, Emrakul is not a permanent. So yes, Tidebinder will counter the triggered ability, but it will not make Emrakul lose its other abilities.
Okay good I actually was really curious about Tashas tidebinder thank you! I figured it wouldnt work but also was worried it was too situational. This is huge!
In edh. Can't a player just wait until your turn is over and swords to plow shares it?
Read what Emrakul says during your turn. It's still says "spells that were cast this turn". In the same way that "now" is the present and is always the present. Now can't be the past or the future. It's right now.
@@attackoncardboard yep I just read that part and then I read about how non targeting spells get around it. It took a minute to understand but your video answered everything. Thank you so much.
Beast deathless prince ramp deck
Is that what deck you're currently playing? 😃
@@attackoncardboard im interested in it, eldrazi just looks like a good addition
What are some other answers to this in Commander ?
Non-damaging boardwipes that don't target. Activated abilities that have been on the board for longer than a turn. Flickering ETB creatures.
@attackoncardboard not sure I'd count destroying my own board as a solution. I'd be curious as to which abilities might be helpful
You're not left with a lot of options if you don't want to lose your creatures.
You can counter Emrakul's triggered ability with a Stifle effect, but you'll still have Emrakul to deal with.
So Whirlwind Denial or Sublime Epiphany type cards that's deal with both the trigger and the spell are what you're looking for.
Black lotus into channel. Bring the aeons torn out on turn 1. You can't afford it, too bad.
🧠
How is it that people do not understand this? it does not leave room for any kind of misunderstanding
Because reading the card doesn't always explain the card and not everyone is an expert like you
God a deck that is just going to abuse this thing with blinking effects would be truly horrific to go against.
I do not think that flicker effects would work.
They go to exile and then enter the battlefield to get their etb but then can not target it since they have entered the battlefield this turn.
Emrakul has protection from things that are 'cast'. If you blink a permanent, you're right, it goes into exile, then comes back, but it *doesn't* use the stack. It coming back is part of the resolution of the thing that blinked it, which means it happens all at once (or not at all, if countered). The permanent moves from exile straight to the battlefield. It has not been 'cast'.
"cast" is the key word. Flickered permanents aren't cast when they come back to the battlefield.
@@attackoncardboard But it steals all creatures. How to benefit from flickering a Solitude you no longer control?
You can still flash in Solitude after Emrakul has been cast, exile something then Flicker it to exile Emrakul.
@@Urathamax uups.. totally missed the cast part :)
If this card takes over modern I’ll just quit
"If" riiiight
Only time will tell 🤞
You can't break what's already broken
For Commander my answer is Zur the Enchanter 😎
How exactly is he helping you? I get it, that there are some combos. But I have a token deck, and when Emrakul steals the majority of my tokens, it is pretty much over. I can't see Zur helping out.
@@desputnikcommander I meant the protection bit. Permanents put into play by Zur are not "cast", so they don't apply. For example, you can use Zur to put a pacifism on Emrakul.
6:10 having avatar of woe in play already won't help bc it would get stolen, consider reanimating a ravenous chupacabra instead
also homeward path may see an increase in popularity in some formats
Can you use Avatar of Woe in response of Emrakul coming in or the stealing of creatures is before it is even in play?
Worse case scenario Woe commit suicide but you have a flyer 12/12 + everything else to deal with.
the stealing happens before emrakul enters sadly as it is a cast trigger
Woe suicide is a really cool strategic option
I feel like another great way of dealing with Emrakul is soul shatter effects, and if your opponent has a creature with mana value 13 or more, that probably needs to die anyways.
Excellent idea!
People everywhere be saying the new Emrakul is broken as shit, but honestly, I think they just hate to see a girlboss winning
Like, god forbid a woman do anything, amirite?
🙌
Ooofff I didn’t think the interaction with this Emrakul would get complex, so thanks for the video
That's why I was inspired. Lots of cool rules interactions to talk about 😀
Nice! Looks like MH3 has your work cut out for ya. Can't wait for the rest of those weird interactions!@@attackoncardboard
if emrakul were being cast by madness from discarding cards, can I use deathrite shaman to exile emrakul from GY?
Thanks to Madness, the card never hits the graveyard when you discard it.
"“If a player would discard this card, that player discards it, *but exiles it instead of putting it into their graveyard*"
You can deal with Emrakul by casting another Emrakul!
😂
That will end up wiping the board, you’ll take all the creatures, then Emrakul will end up legend rule dying and sacrificing all of your creatures. 😅
I'm considering building a deck with this as a secret commander, and Omnath, Locus of All as the official commander.
I'm still confused by the "this turn" bit. Is it "this turn" every turn or just the turn emrakul was cast?
It's the turn where Emrakula currently exists. IE, Every turn theyre in play.
@@attackoncardboard ok so just every single turn, fair and balanced. Thank you for the reply though I do appreciate it.
@@hatimzeineddine8723 'Fraid so. Even stronger protection than the original Emrakul 😅
Honestly the madness cost is just insanely stupid. Something that powerful should not be able to be cast for cheap. >< wizards what are you on with this bs? :P
Yea i can see many just checking out of the game if they get all their stuff stolen. The fact it is not a till end of turn thing or you can get your stuff back if it dies, which would help balance this bs of a card, is horrid design.
Wait you still get perma control of all thier creatures if its countered? They really don't know how to do proper card design these days it seems.
Another terrible reiteration of an already amazing card. Why break whats broken
Couldn’t a reanimated creature also deal with Emukrul?
yeah, if you don't cast it from your graveyard
"If someone casts Emrakul, just hope you have this creature that can tap to destroy another creature already in play."
Might've forgotten about that first line, chief.
Sure did! 😅
mono red was asking it
does any sacrifice effect would be another way to get rid of Emmy? Cards like Sheoldred's edict?
I believe I mention those in the video 😃
What were you trying to say with that "Because Emrakul never leaves the battlefield" line? I’m pretty sure that line will proc more than once if I’m using her.
If Emrakul is on the stack, and gets countered. Her "leaves the battlefield" ability will never trigger.
Nah, the edits of this channel are AMAZING.
🥰
I was sure Modern was already broken, so I can't see how any card can break it 🙂
Just think, this is only our first preview for MH3 😂
I think at this point. Eldrazi Summer finna force a total ban fr.
Least reactionary mtg player
We might get some better answers in MH3, previews, surprisingly, aren't that far away.
@@attackoncardboard "Super Oblivion Ring: when Super Oblivion Ring Enters the battlefield, Flicker it, then when it enters the battelfield the second time: do the Oblivion ring text"
Thanks for your explanation!
Hope you enjoyed it! 😀
very well explained!
Thanks! 😊 If you have any other questions, just let me know 😁
Turn 3 12/12 is totally balanced
That's Tron decks for you.
Since the deck it’s coming out in gets access to all colors you can counterspell it after you cast it so you still get to keep all the creatures without having to sacrifice them
Not a fan at all of this Emrakul whatsoever, and I'm a big eldrazi fan usually. Emrakul usually stands out as one of the more busted pieces you could risk losing friends over, but this new one's cost is so cheap that you could just as well potentially lose a lot of the community over it if it begins to take over loved casual formats. Can be played in any deck, and you're nearly guaranteed to retain control of permanents for at least a turn with the protection ability. New Emrakul is a big FU to a player, and it'd feel terrible having to leave your paid commander pod just because someone madness casted or fortell casted the card through other means, such as via a certain commander someone local plays with at our shop to spam the board with timed giant things for no mana while running removals and counters.
Imagine you're trying to play any combat deck, and the opponent doesnt do anything but bounce, exile, wipe, and suddenly he's got a player's creatures worth lethal to someone else, and you're next to figure out how to remove the beast. Might as well have mugged us for money and told us to f*** off.
I don't see it being a problem in Commander at all. TBH The Promised End was more a pain in the arse, as the Mindslaver effect would just ruin a single player's hand and boardstate. New Emrakul only effects boardstate at least. And dont forget, it dies to a boardwipe, not like there's any shortage of those in Commander.
@attackoncardboard Not often does anyone have wipes as instants. Someone's still nearly guaranteed to fall on cast turn even if emrakul was countered, which as the video explained, would even allow Em to keep the creatures since Em is not on the field to leave it. So it's a very likely -1 player for 6 mana madness, while at the same time requiring only very specific means to flip the situation over for the remaining players.
Cast it and Counter it directly😂
finally more blue tron support
The madness cost is specifically *colourless mana*, it can't be paid with generic mana.
Forgive me, because the wording of the rules is confusing me, but a counterspell would work because it resolves at instant speed, right? The rules clearly state that it's a spell on the stack until it resolves, so if a counter isn't countered, it would resolve and counter Emrakul? Does Emrakul not have prot spells until it would ETB?
I'm assuming that you can't counter Emrakul as the counter would still be a spell, therefore you can only get around Emrakul through abilities.
So you cast Emrakul and place them on the stack. When you do, their "when you cast" triggered ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of Emrakul.
You can counter Emrakul with Counterspell, but their On Cast triggered ability will still resolve.
The Protection ability only comes into effect when they're on the Battlefield 🙂
What about activated abilities on cards that entered this turn?
Emrakul has protection from them too!
I really can't get why the first line is activated if Emrakul is countered. I mean, he's countered so he was technically never "cast".
And again it feels super dumb that protection does not work on non-targeting Wrath-like effect. He's protected from everything cast this turn... Except the whole shit tons of thing that don't just specifically target him. Duh.
It looks like Magic rules have been written to always do the most convoluted and less obvious thing possible.
'Cast' and 'resolve' are two different things.
"Cast" simply means you put the spell on the stack and pay the relevant costs. That's why the ability triggers, even if the spell doesn't resolve.
Just because it works like that doesn't make it logical...@@attackoncardboard
one problem though there is a factor the emrakul might be easier to remove than we think (and i'm not talking wraths or anything that doesn't target.)
I has "This turn" so if you got a permanent with a activated ablitiy like a flicker/removal what ever once the turn ends they can just shoot her then the board is wrathed.
now this is a phenomenal Emrakul no question about that but this part of the reason why i feel its somewhat overrated plus in commander its only one player the other 2 opponent can just blast it with what i mentioned above.
How is Emrakul easier to remove than we think? Can you provide any card examples?
lets say i cast a eldrazi displacer for one example it can't target right now because its was cast but once the turn ends I believe the displacer can now target it since its no longer "This turn" (if i read emrakul wrong my mistake)
Ps "Flash" can also be used to loophole cmc on ETB effects on creatures (its just not a modern legal trick)@@attackoncardboard
Oh, I understand what you mean now. Surely then the Emrakul player would just target the player with the creatures that could disrupt Emrakul like that. Not every deck is going to be running blink effects.
minor clarify its after they already did the emrakul thing@@attackoncardboard
Why not just kill it with a targeted spell at the next upkeep ?
"Protection from spells" stops that from happening.
@@attackoncardboard Lol i read protection from spells... that were cast this turn. I was wondering what was the point of having protection from spells that were cast this turn :D
Was hoping for a giant tentacle moon monster but this will do just as nicely im happy to see emrakul back in action does this mean she's free of the moon now or is this set in the past?
The MH3 sets are "points in time", it's not officially cannon.
@@attackoncardboard so I can possibly still get a giant moon spaghetti monster!?
Ugin is super pissed that the Gatewatch have either destroyed or locked up the Titans on another plane, because they are older than time itself and that's probably going to have an impact on the multiverse. So who knows what's going to happen after the Omen path arch wraps up.
@@attackoncardboard all I can think about is the emra-kulaid meme lol and yeah there's definitely gotta be some kinda consequence to destroying the universes cleanup crew lol I just wounder if that's gonna take the form of new even more terrifying creatures or something else...
Can't you just kill it the turn after it was cast?
It will still have "Protection from spells" every turn.
It's "Protection from *permanents* that were cast this turn" which checks which turn they were cast.
@@attackoncardboard Well that's confusing, the way it's worded sounds like the turn Emakrul was casted only
Spells are always cast "this turn" you can't cast a spell on a previous or future turn.
If the effect was only going to last for a single turn, it would use the wording "Until end of turn, Emrakul has protection from spells and permanents"
@@attackoncardboard I know but still, weird wording
The "permanent that was cast this turn" clause is because Emrakul in the past has had "protection from colored spells" So someone whould have their Emrakul (that they probably cheated in so they didn't get the extra turn.. but they were sure they would win with their 15/15) and then opponent would respond with Oblivion Ring or Journey to Nowhere.. Emmy player would be all "protection!" and then opponent would point out "the thing doing the targeting is not a colored spell, but a permanent: enchantement" ..The "cast this turn" makes it so these types of enchantments that only target on ETB don't work if they ETB'd by way of being cast
Forgot damage for protection
Flickering solitude also doesn't work
1:51 "can't be damaged by"
And yes, flickering Solitude does work, did you watch the video? 😅
If you flicker a Solitude, when it gets exiled, it becomes a new game object, and when it ETBs, it wasn't cast, so it can exile Emrakul as it's neither a spell nor a permanent that was cast this turn.
Just had someone resolve their emrakul in limited with the double cast eldrazi enchantment. Most expensive and silly board wipe ever
Just gonna not bother shuffling up to play against someone using this as thier commander. Not going to be a fun game at all.
0:49 They?
EMRAKUL GOES BY SHE/HER!!!
It's an Eldritch-inspired spaghetti monster, it doesn't go by anything. That said, the citizens of Zendikar did at some point worship it as a female divinity.
For next time, if I'm not sure about a fictional characters pronouns, what would you like me to do? Er on the side of caution and use a gender neutral term, or get it wrong? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Also, what the other person said, giant tentacle monsters of unimaginable horror that is older than time. What do you want?
why call emrakul a they if she's canonically a she?
Because singular they doesn't have to be about gender? Why are you like this?
Because I er on side of caution as I can't remember every detail of lore. Which would you prefer I use if I'm not sure?
