Pieces 13 and 14 are supposed to represent a component on the real dive helmet that directs a stream of air on the forward viewport to prevent condensation.
I got the template and made this for holloween. It was fun and the outcome was excellent! People kept on asking me how i made it and how original and beautiful it looked. Thank u so much for making my Halloween fun!
Sometimes I watch these just for the comedy and to watch the technique. I'll probably never make a diving helmet like this one, but it was sure entertaining and educational. As a retired engineer I appreciate what has gone in to the design of these projects.
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!! Love this! I'm making a Steampunk camper and going to make this into a light fixture! THANK YOU!!! Please come up with more Steampunk ideas!

@@LostWaxPieces 13 and 14 are supposed to represent a component on the real dive helmet that directs a stream of air on the forward viewport to prevent condensation.
Making this tomorrow for an undersea rave party. I bought the full collection of patterns a few years ago and have made a few models from it. Excellent value compared to many cosplay designers and very good support and instructions. 20 stars outa 5
5:22 - Pieces 13 and 14 make up the transceiver housing, which is fitted in the correct place on this helmet. Many reproductions stick them further back but on the genuine US Navy Mk V helmets, they're mounted in the same place as on here, so massive kudos for authenticity!
This IS most impressive!!! I've never played with foam like this, and I'm amazed at what you've done with it (in this and other videos)! I see an exploration into the world of craft foam, hot glue/contact cement, and acrylic paints in my future - and all because of your beautiful inspiration! This is art!
Joints can also be done with contact cement, which is more work, but I trust it more than hot glue for sturdiness. Oh! Nice pattern and workmanship there!
They make bigger silicone mats. I saw one that’s 24x60 and it’s gridded. This a great project for anyone doing a diver for Halloween or underwater theme for a party and have a dummy or skeleton in it but be sure to make the entire outfit.
Hi Chris, this is awesome. I am almost finished with the helmet. I bought your pattern and it works fantastic. Even a bloody beginner as me can get it done. I use the helmet for our Rock-Show Stage performance. We are Covernaut a Rock cover band who supposed to be a "steampunk-look" expedition team with their Ship Covernaut on the seven Seas. So your Helmet was exactly what I was looking for to complete our appearance. Thanx a lot!
Your vids are always hilarious and amaze balls, but this particular build was especially spectacular. Your creativity blows me away!! The clip at the end of you "diving" was also hysterical, lol. Thanks for being awesome and creatively inspiring.
Pieces 13 and 14 are supposed to represent a component on the real dive helmet that directs a stream of air on the forward viewport to prevent condensation.
@LostWax so I've been doing some research, and on helmets of older design, like the russian 3 bolt diving helmet, it is an air diffuser. However on the U.S. mk 5 it's a pocket for the communication speaker.
TDUD3 You're welcome, also the airline runs to a check valve on the back of the helmet and the exhaust vent bleeds off the side so it doesn't bubble in the diver's face.
John Beauvais cool!, like I can get an idea of the all and how it works watching some videos and such, but never knew that.. that part were a microphone, never went to really search about it.. now im more intrigued about the all custom.. im gonna research for it, thanks man.
I'm currently working on Steampunking my downstairs. I saw this in my email and my first thought was, "That's cool, but I don't need a divers helmet." Then it occurred to me that it would look AWESOME in my downstairs as decoration (and...maybe occasionally to be worn around my house, lest the neighbors think I'm normal or something.) Another awesome creation! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing creations!
I'm giving this a go for a photoshoot we have on Sunday... Complete newbie here but your instructions look pretty thorough and I'm stubborn as hell. I'll send you the pics if it turns out well!
im kind of missing the hose connectors tho. but Im guessing you could find some suitable piping from your hardware store and glue on for a quick solution to that.
I think your videos are really cool. My brothers and I enjoy watching them. You should make some Lord of the Rings chest plates, helmets, swords, shields, etc.
let's be honest. u rock. the fact that u try to figure things out before u make these tutorials shows ur dedication to art. u would be the coolest art teacher ever. and just so we are straight on it, ur voice is perfect for tutorial instructing. This is absolutely amazing! Chris, you're insanely talented! :) Thank you so much for sharing your patterns! It would be interesting to see how you work on making the patterns. It seems like magic to me! :)
This is absolutely brilliant- I love this! Great video too, it's looks like it is very easy to follow. I'm thinking about buying the pattern as I'd really like to make this for my partner as a decorative piece. I wondered, how easy would be to scale this down so that it is half size?
This pattern scales down quite well. The pattern does already include two sizes, the adult size as well as one that would fit a child, so, depending what you want you might not need to scale.
Make something Dr Who inspired please. Maybe a Dalek hat! 😂 I love your videos and your mellow tone of voice makes me think I can make anything you came.
I love all your videos and already bought several patterns you supply (included this terrific helmet) :) May I ask you to think about making a steampunk gramophone with its beautiful horn... that would be awesome !!! Let me know :) greetings from France :)
This looks realistic enough to give someone a heart attack if you threw it at them !! Nice job. The GOOD EVA foam, without the tread plate on the back side, would look much nicer for this project.
@@LostWax Yeah. I'm definitely gonna build one, using your work as inspiration, along with a nice, little replica, that I got a good deal on, at a thrift shop, as reference. It's pretty accurate, and the details appear to be exact. It's made of real brass and some other metals, and is roughly, about a quarter of the size of the real thing (about the size of a large cantaloupe or a honey dew melon). It's pretty cool looking for a small scale. Now I wanna make an actual size one out of EVA. I'm glad I found your video. GREAT JOB!!
So many yeas down the track and iv finally made one of your things. Hopefully I have enough time in the hyper fixation that I can get a few more made 👌🏼

Definitely. I am going to assume you are using hot glue? If you take a small piece of the foam that you used to make the helmet- this works best if you didn't use really soft foam, and you rub that foam along the glue seam kinda quickly. The extra glue will soften and rub away, leaving a pretty nice seam. If you want to go a step further after that, use some fine (400grit) sandpaper and repeat.
just got the patterns, planning to build this with a few modifications namely some exhaust vents concealing fans, spooky looking window tinting (only after making sure a fan can provide enough air) and trying to figure out a simple way to harden the helmet with fiberglass and twist on/off the actual helmet from the collar for a costume im planning... one question, where can I get a roll of EVA foam that size, preferably from a retail outlet found in the USA?
I'm not in the U.S. but I would check at the big hardware stores, usually sold as a kind of anti fatigue mat. I also have a link to one from Amazon on my product page here: www.lostwaxoz.com/product-links/
I actually found some at harbor freight tools when I went for some cheap bits to work on this with. I was familiar with the puzzle mats but the roll is a bit thinner and I ended up picking up enough foam for several helmets as there was a sale on the puzzle mats
Just finished this. Thanks for the pattern. For a first attempt working with foam, I could have done worse. Would like to send you some pics. What's the best way to get them to you?
I would love to get people sharing their creations on instagram, If you hashtag it #LostLargeAsLife I will see it. Or you can email it to me at lostwaxozcontact@gmail.com

The regular size pattern will fit on a 72" x 19" sheet of foam. As for density, you want something a similar density to the puzzle piece foam mats you can get. But it will work even with the lighter, foam you'd find in a camping mat.
