Yes I probably have more in common with John Shelby Spong these days. But I still feel a deep connection to my Christian heritage. Its impossible to divorce oneself from that. This song is such an awesome afront to the shallow materialism of contemporary society. I also think Michael Card is very good at expressing the 'kingdom of God' message of Jesus ministry in song. As Bishop N.T. Wright says, the New Testament isn't just the incarnation and the passion - as deeply important as that is for Christianity - the gospel proclaims Jesus as the one who speaks, brings and ushers in a new kingdom on earth. Or as John Dominic Crossan argues, that the acts of Jesus - as in washing the disciples feet - are as much demonstrative parables as were those he spoke. Thank you again for posting.
Our Grace Brethren have the footwashing service in our communion. It shows servant hood but even more the daily cleasning God gives us from sin, but I am with you good friend..serving others is part of the joy of knowing the greatest server of all..Jesus
God called us to be His servants; to bring hope, healing and reconciliation within our communities. It is tragic that nowadays we see so much civil unrest - hatred, violence, and intolerance from those who preach and petition for tolerance themselves. Michael Card's beautiful song has reminded me of God's promise that one day men will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks, that peace will cover the earth and we will all be friends.

A place where the most destitute and despised are not rejected but the guess of honor. That my friends is the great feast where Jesus will serve us in the new kingdom. Even then He still serves...
