This was, without a doubt, one of the great Neville Brand's best performances. What a great, underrated actor...

One of my favourite movies - only recently discovered it and now I can't stop watching it! Just brilliant

Stacy Keach's finest, most resonant, arresting performance ever, and he did it in less than a minute. Now that's acting.

The scene where he is pounding on the wall and Groper looks scared all of a sudden. I'm pretty sure the Groper just realized he is the "other" Col. Kane aka Killer Kane.

That is such an unbelievably great rant from Mr. Keach. Nice work from Mr. Brand, too. Mr. Blatty needs to direct another one!

One of my all time favourite movie scenes. The first time I saw it I just froze for half a minute.

Neville Brand’s performance is underrated as well.

Agreed. Sadly, this would be Brand's last good role before he died.

There's an even better scene, earlier on, in which Groper gives Kane a hard time about something. Groper's face freezes up, then dissolves into utter fear and shock, and he simply says, "Yes, sir, whatever you say sir" or words to that effect. The best part is that since Kane's face is shot from behind, we have no idea what Groper is really reacting to... which is far more effective than the histrionics in the scene posted above, however fun to watch they are.

I read the book Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane before I saw this movie decades ago. In the book it states that Groper saw the killer look in Kane's eyes and knew that icy stare.

How did Stacy Keach NOT get nominated for an Oscar?

quaestor, perhaps Histrionics was the wrong choice of words. But it does stand out amongst the preternaturally calm performance throughout the film

Neville Brand was a highly decorated WW11 veteran, European campaign. He fought Nazis, and I truly believe he wasn’t acting and sincerely hated wearing that uniform.

Why was he called "Killer Kane" as an insult? He was just a darn good soldier doing his duty.

I'll have to read the book to find out (originally titled "Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane"). The "nom de guerre" isn't necessarily an insult. People are labelled or take on names to fit a role as a means of surviving the mission.

    • @finalascent
      @finalascent 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Exactly. And sometimes a "nom de guerre" is kind of a weird mix of reverence and insult. BTW, I tried reading the original book. Ugggh.... Film was way better, surprising since Blatty wrote the book and adapted it.

He was called "Killer Kane" because he was really good at killing people. He'd cut your head off with a wire, that sort of thing.

There was an actual Marine Reconnaissance team in Vietnam called "Killer Kane" during the 60's that developed a reputation for lethality and effectiveness. How they came up with that name, who knows... it was probably from Buck Rogers, like the film referenced.

One of the pleasures of this film is the way so many scenes straddle that thin line between poignant and pretentious.
