THE REAL OBSESSION : NYAR KA'KELLO AOKO HULLY ( HULDA) , THE WOMAN WHOSE BEAUTY ABDUCTED BROTHER CHARLY'S COMPOSITIONS . Charles Oindo K'Oloo popularly known as Brother Charly holds the record of a number of songs done for a single Lady in the history of Luo Benga . Charly did about 7 songs to one Aoko Hully through out his music career - starting from Aoko Hully 1 to Goodbye Hully . The question though wasn't Brother Charly's inspiration and consistency about Hully but how beautiful this woman was to deserve such praise and prayers by Brother Charly and whether they were really in a relationship in the first place. Even his close friends like Opiyo Bw Emma who was also his Band leader at Victoria A Jazz wondered. The truth is , Brother Charly met Aoko Hully as a youth immediately after doing her form four and as usual , such relationships come with various expectations that if unfulfilled might haunt either of the party for life ; in this case Brother Charly was the victim . Aoko Hully was one of those ladies who would use a man as an umbrella , being with you when it shines or when it rains in their life and forget you when the weather is good . She had a secondary education and this lifted her to a standard higher than that of Brother. She later left Brother Charly in Migori and headed to Mombasa with a promise that she would come back one day and marry him. Because of love Brother believed that she'd one day come back to her. She had gotten a job in one of the hotels in Mombasa , what later turned out to be a Journey to her marriage. After the split of Victoria Jazz , Charly relocated to Nairobi and stayed in Mathare where most members of Victoria A like Oguda OTC , Okidi Wuod Nyanyuok , Adika Mayaka who was a Solo Guitarist , Odoyo Ngurngoche and Bw Emma stayed . Here he got a hint from someone who knew Hully that she had been married in Mombasa . The telegrams , letters and calls went unanswered. Charly couldn't believe that the Aoko he knew would one day break the pot of their promise and move to another one else apart from his. He made several attempts to reach Hully but it couldn't work. Music was the only mode of communicating her dissatisfaction and he decided to do it the better way. He composed song after song , trying to resuscitate their beautiful moments. Goodbye Hully remains my favourite not only because of the excellent composition but the beautiful instrumentals by the likes of Odongo Dwele who was in the bass guitar for this particular song. It is very poetic with a load of important messages to Hully. The mood in this song is resigning and it seem Brother Charly was giving up on Hully after numerous attempts to have her back . The hope was gone but he is affirming that despite everything, Hully remained the most beautiful woman with a beautiful heart he ever met. The opening two verses of which he deeply express his undying love for Hully and the pain of losing her goes like :- "..Bradhe anyon waya kapod angima mondo owinjae , Kata awer pacha rumo ne nyako ngimana chanda Sani akuong amosie odusa lera Hully jaber Nyar gi Auma sama ochak wero wende piny chama Hully na ni takawo ni en e kende ei chunya Sama awero wendi ang'iyo mana piny ngima joga Bebi na love tura ti konyo tek winja kawer Pod awendo ka tiyomboya nang'o donge iwita Koso daket kora ni in e kende kare iwuonda Nikech arito ndalo ema kalo Hully pod ok onee Kata ka ura tagiyo ne nyako moketho chunya ni Samoro aparo naluw aluwa ndachi ka ng'ama orundi Ne wang'iewo kodi love moro pesa ma ok ong'ee Tinde iloko wiyi iyomboyago pogna mara adong' Be nayud nyako ma rambanya kaka in Hully Aoko amako kiti kaka ichalo nyaka chieng' e chunya .." Brother Charly is still alive , staying at his home in Marabiko , Masara Suna West in Migori . At some point , he ventured into matatu business but due to old age , he retired to do other businesses at home.
@ellyOgal; interesting! Almost all men have had a once in life Hully Aoko drama, whether in Africa, Europe, America or Asia-Middle East. It's a single strike blow followed by an eternal retreat. As per Hully, she just couldn't run faster than the popular Mombasa "bordou"; Kuingia rahisi, kutoka ni ngumu! She went in a similar manner to 3 of the Late Omore's wives; Apondi Betty, Achieng Maggy and Auma Pilly. Similar happened to 2 of the late Odongo Agwata's wives; Debora Achieng and Dinah nyar Oneya and many un-mentioned. Mombasa has Always been a needle in the heart of many Benga musicians. Thanks for sharing!
