    I'm glad they're starting to include a Jon into the show more. I think the Colbert writers weren't quite sure what to do with him coming from the old show, but he's a real asset. He's fun, energetic, and wickedly talented. Glad they're giving him a voice.

      what is that third pedal for? I have it and it puzzles me everyday.

    • @wolfsurvival2009
      @wolfsurvival2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@yasmineabouali6537 On an upright piano, it either pulls down a bar with felt or brings the hammers closer to the keys. Either way, it's kind of like the soft pedal only a lot softer.
      On a grand piano, it takes the dampers off the string of each key you are currently depressing as you push the pedal down. So it's like the right pedal (sustain pedal) but only for your selection of notes.
      It can be fun to see the piano from the inside and study what happens when you press a key or pedal.
      By the way, I'm a pianist and piano teacher and I approve this video ;)

      pianofiend I need to learn how to play the piano or violin or something. I grew up as a bit of a gamer so I kind of have a bit of a preference for game music, old and new, original and remixed. I just think it would be nice just to learn how to play something pleasant for people once in a while. Here are a couple of examples.

    The middle pedal is the Sostenuto. It lets you sustain some of the notes. Basically, some objections get sustained, while others are overruled. Especially when triangle offenses are committed in the basketball court.

      @christopher7042 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mute? stop a note from ringing i think.

    • @gfabisevich
      @gfabisevich 9 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      +martinaee It sustains a note, but only one note/chord at a time. So, unlike the sustain pedal, which sustains all the notes present and future, the middle one will sustain just that one note/chord, while you play later notes without sustaining them

    • @MrMelonMuffins
      @MrMelonMuffins 9 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      +Glen F That's true only for grand pianos. Upright pianos are always, from left to right:
      hammers closer to the string for softer sound, strings muted for practice, strings released for sustain sound.
      Grand pianos are more complicated and include the one pedal you said.

    • @bobsmith-ov3kn
      @bobsmith-ov3kn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +Brendan Beckett the middle pedal is usually a separate bass note sustain. Any notes held down (up to middle C) when you push the pedal down will stay sustained until you let go, but any notes played while the pedal is already down don't get sustained.
      It's really not that complicated, I don't know why it's like this joke

    According to Wikipedia, the middle pedal on any upright piano is a "practice" pedal, similar to turning the volume all the way down on a digital keyboard . . . (?)

    2:35 That middle pedal? It's called the sostenuto pedal, and it only "targets" specific notes.
    I was watching a master class taught by the Hungarian pianist, Andras Schiff. While giving advice on how to play a work by Janacek, he suggested the student use the middle pedal to sustain one particular note because that's what the middle pedal does - it will sustain a single note or chord, while other notes remain unaffected.
    I thought, "Okay, so FINALLY someone tells me!"

    As a multi-instrumentalist, I find all these steps quite interchangable. Like, what the hell does the thumb trigger do in a trombone?!
