I remember the red welts Lyle gave Bugner on Bugner's ribs, which were quite visible in rounds 11 and 12. He did the same to Jimmy Young. Lyle was a great body puncher.
This was certainly a close fight. 57-52 for Lyle on the third judge's scorecard sealed it. I would have thought Ron Lyle didn't hesitate and knew how to throw combination punches when he closed in to Joe Bugner. He looked hesitant to rain punches.
It's weird hearing the commentary team of Tim Ryan and Larry Merchant on NBC. Ryan made his name on CBS calling fights with Gil Clancy. Merchant made his broadcasting name on HBO calling fights with Barry Tompkins and then Jim Lampley. Interesting to hear Ryan and Merchant together in the early days of their boxing commentary careers.
Bugner sure came to fight , and this after he stopped Richard Dunn in the first round in his last fight. Only wish Bugner had shown this aggression in his second fight against Ali.
Bugner moved to Australia, became their heavyweight champ in his late forties and lost to Scott Welch in UK. Welch, one of our top heavyweights at the time, would later appear in the movie 'snatch' fighting with Brad Pitts character
not weird = Bugner had the physique and the training - just needed to in the mood to fight, nearly never was. except vs Richard Dunn KOd him and Winston Allen KOd him with one punch.
if Bugner had had a punch to match his skill speed and rock hard chin , he would have been a champ , totally unappreciated in Britain yet was 10 times the boxer Henry Cooper was
Yeah it's strange how Cooper was idolised by the British public and press despite being far more one dimensional. Bugner didn't deserve all the negativity
@@jakeyb25 Not strange at all. Bugner exasperated every fight fan in the UK. He had it all, size, skill and punch power and he could take a punch, yet never lived up to his potential. He just didn't do nearly enough in his fights. Always holding, never letting his punches go, always defensive. As one British boxing writer said: "He has the body of a Greek statue...But fewer moves."
@@timothyratajczyk8507 no he wasnt , you obviously never watched it nobody beat anyone , and no way could cooper have lasted with any of Bugners opponents, he even dodged Frazier
@@oldschoolboxing6048 I think you are trying to justify Lyle being a cross dresser/drag queen. You don't have to, as what he does with his private life outside the boxing ring is his affair. And providing it doesn't harm anyone, good luck to him.
He had that power but chose not to use it most of the time after he killed a fighter early in his career. If you want to see what he could do when in the mood, watch his fights with Richard Dunn and Winston Allen.
Thanks for the video, Old School Boxing
Big Ron with a solid victory. Joe gave him a tough fight. Never realized Joe was taller than Ron.

He was indeed a very good body puncher, Thanks for watching. 💪
Excellent upload thank you
Thanks for watching 🤝
thank you for the upload - be well be lucky
Bugner was a very good Heavyweight contender. So was Lyle, either man would hold the Title today.
Good, almost forgotten fight. Lyle really put it to Bugner, but Joe kept it close.
Good fight Ronnie was a serious heavy weight contender Nice man as well
Underrated forgotten HW's.

Its weird that Bugner made comeback in 80s and beat Tillis and Greg Page.

damn right Bugner never really punched his weight
Bugner was beaten badly by Cooper. Watch the fight.

Why is the great, late Ron Lyle wearing a yellow ear ring in the thumb nail??
That is not ron lyle in the thumbnail. It is a woman from one of the advertisments

Joe bugner. Looked like Brutus, fought like olive.
If bugner had more power he would have won more fights, you can be good but you lose fight you should win
