Walk Around York's Hidden Medieval (and Roman) Gems!

- York is a beautiful, medieval city filled with magnificent famous buildings! The Minster! The abbey! Stonegate! Jorvik Viking centre!
So let's ignore them completely and take a little walk around the city to some of the less well-known places, and maybe one or two that you might have seen before!
A beautiful Yorkshire day calls for a video of some of the bits of town that I always love to visit whenever I'm in York. I hope you enjoy them too!

As an American living in a city where anything from the 19th century is considered ancient, my mind simply boggles at the idea of being surrounded by so much history. York is so beautiful and it's definitely on my bucket list. Thank you for the tour!
Hi Jimmy, sorry you're still feeding under the weather. Get some rest and don't worry about us, we'll be here when you're feeling up to it. I really hope you're getting some sort of commission from the British Tourism Board or whoever is in charge of trying to get people to visit the UK! Your videos about visiting historical sites always makes me want to instantly book tickets to go see them 😍

I'm glad you were able to focus on taking care of your health! And I'm amazed at how much of historical York is still intact - especially with everything being built so on top of each other! How cool!
This is brilliant, I had no idea about any of these sites apart from the Eye of York, thank you for shedding some light on them! I'm thinking of applying for a Experimental Archaeology masters at York Uni, and this makes me want to go back and visit even more! I'm glad you're feeling better now too. Also PODCAST YES PLEASE!!
I got to visit York way back in '89. Was staying in Beverly and visited a book shop, where the shopkeeper showed me a book that was a tour of York by walking the wall. Bought the booklet and did that walk. One of my favourite experiences in the UK! Thanks for taking me back 😊
This made me realize how weird this is. There's just something about living in certain European cities where you can walk past centuries old Roman ruins on a daily basis. You get used to it, or desensitized, you know. It's just always been there. And then wide eyed tourists think it's so incredibly amazing.
"oh the Wall ruins, yeah, I went to picnics there as a child, it's not very comfy", "it's literally a 2000 year old ruin from a fallen civilization, how are you not amazed by this".
I know Americans for example can't even imagine something like this. It's not even that we don't care about history, it's that it doesn't occur to you how special this is. Especially if a lot of surrounding cities/villages also have ruins. It's just a normal occurrence here. But it's completely abnormal for tourists. Neat.
There's a lot of history in the America's too. Just not as well known and perhaps fewer stone ruins under current cities. But there's still history there.
Those damn victorians! *angrily shakes fist* I'm also blaming them for no-one coming to see your play. Disgraceful!
So glad to see you back here again. I'd probably still watch if you'd read from a phone book so no worries😉 though I might need some anecdotes and fun ramblings with that🤔 I hope you keep doing better and better!
What a beautiful city! There's something so thrilling about knowing a place has just got history piled on top of history, kind of... A physical representation of the passage of time. Whew.

I loved visiting York and I can't wait to go back. I knew nothing about and randomly chose it and I'm so glad I did. Got to go down to the crypt in the minster while the choir was performing and it was ethereal.
I love the little tours! Please do more. Also never apologize for taking care of yourself, anyone who gets mad at you for taking care of yourself doesn't deserve access to you. I hope I can travel to all these places one day but until then I will have to live vicariously through you

How fun, your Black Swan seems to have inspired a restaurant near me, Swan on the Rideau, definitely influenced the architecture since I'm pretty sure we don't have buildings older than the late 1700s in Ontario!! Oldest building in Canada that's still standing is in Montreal, built in 1684. We just don't have the same kind of history... the city I live in was only founded 196 years ago.
It probably makes land development in Canada a lot easier over there; as you don't have to keep stopping to excavate Roman ruins. Of course, York is relatively young when compared to somewhere like Athens. 👍
More of this kind of thing please! Rambling around old bits of cities and getting hopelessly lost is one of my favourite past times.

I loved this! We visited York when I was 12 and way too cool for the history my mom liked, but I still remember Yorvik Viking Center with fondness
As someone who wants to study medieval history and everyday people, this makes me so so jealous. I wish I could just go on a walk and see so much history like that.
This was brilliant - thank you so much. We here in the states don't understand how awsome it is to stand inside a building that was built nearly 1000 years ago. When you are lucky enough to travel and do so, it takes your breath away and reminds we USians that we're very young indeed. Thank you for this.

I went to York when I was 21 (sent to the Uk by my parents for the birthday) - Loved it; walked the walls, the Minster, Jorvik centre, The railway museum of course! SO.Much.History!
Looks at York from Australia.... Over here, we heritage listed a building from 1980. Cries...
For what it's worth, you being you is what you "normally do", and this was an absolute treat to watch... just in case Future Jimmy ever needs a reminder it's okay to take things gently when he needs to! I've only spent the briefest time in York, but totally fell in love with the place. There's a point on there wall where there's a board (Chess? Checkers? What did they play on it?) carved into the stone floor, and somehow I particularly love little side details like that.
Reusage was a very real thing. But that is so cool to be able to see that many centuries in one city's architecture.

I went to USheffield and we bopped up to York practically once a month. It's a really great city.

Hey Jimmy, great to see you again! As an Australian, I find it fascinating to see in your videos the actual things we read about, hear about or see “dramatised” versions of in movies etc. There is virtually nothing older than about 250 years here, except of course aboriginal artefacts, so it’s really interesting to me.

The Black Swan is a great atmospheric pub with decent food and good beer. The York pagan group and the York folk music group both meet at the Black Swan.
Awww loving the less famous aspects of my city getting their due. Your bringing back memories of school trips and doing my own play down in the bottom of the roman tower.

Loved this - York is the place I have most loved living in and if I could choose 1 place to live again outside of my home country, New Zealand, it would be there for sure. I went for a long weekend because of the Richard III connection when I first arrived in the UK and ended up staying for 18 months! I am always telling people who are going to the UK to include York in their itinerary. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and I appreciated the tour of some of the lesser covered historical gems.

Thanks so much for posting this. I only spent a few weeks in York in 2012 and 2013 but it's an absolutely beautiful city that carved a place in my heart. It was so good to see it again
I miss it so much. Yesterday I watched a Scotsman (inside the walls!) doing a live TikTok around the city.

I spent a couple of weeks studying at the Uni there on summer schools - lots of chem work and nice walks, plus a ton of drinking.

It's incredible to imagine so much history still standing in one place. Where I live we have nothing of the sorts. Not because people didn't live here (there are some bronze age grave finds not far from here), but because most building were made of wood, and everything have been burnt down at one point or another.
This was brilliant! It reminded me of my visit to England & the afternoon walks to various ruins, & picturesque towns. I hope you feel better soon! Much love from Arizona!

Thank you for the images of St. Leonards Spittal, I have read a series of books set in York during the 1300s and St. Leonards features in the majority of them. I had often wondered if any parts still remained so I am thrilled to see at least a bit of the great building/facility/hospital/old peoples home (because they also had carrodies in place, at least for a short while during the time of John of Gaunt) still exists in some slight form. Great video as always.
I really like this format, it's easier to paint an accurate picture of how things look while you give the information. I wouldn't mind more of these videos even if you have more time and feel better again :)

This is a fantastic video for me this week! As I’m already going down my own (early medieval textiles) research rabbit hole a beautiful walk around medieval York is just perfect! One day I hope to visit it & just gently place my hands on some of those ancient stones… ah just such a beautiful video.
I don't know much about cities in England, but it's a fun little history lesson. The one thing I remember hearing about York is the Gladiator graveyard they found. One of the skeletons was tall and had iron shakles cast around his feet. That story made an impression.
But I never really realised that in old cities you'd have so many buildings from different centuries all next to eachother. (Probably because Dutch buildings look a bit different)

Next time you’re in york I really recommend visiting St Deny’s Church! It has amazing stained glass windows - mainly from the 14th/15th centuries, but also includes two reset 12th century roundels which is the oldest in York

Most interested in Wales, as my family are descendant from Gilbert "the Red" de Clare of Caerphilly Castle. I'm studying archaeology here (as I've probably mentioned a bunch of times in various comments lol) and it's awesome to see this video on the same day as I've been walking around these same places, just today I had a field trip around the Museum Gardens and discussed all these same ruins and remains as you're showing. Lovely city, I'd recommend a long visit for anyone who can get here, there's so much to see that you'll never run out of stuff no matter how many times you come!
Oh shit just saw from that shot of Clifford's tower that it is in the same state I saw it in yesterday (I had a field trip around York Castle and Bailey Hill that ended up going to St Mary Bishop Hill Junior too lol), with all the scaffolding coming down from the restorations it looks like you might have just missed me or I may even be in the background of one of these videos, that's very fun
