    Thank you so much for your patience with this piece! I'm proud to present the fourth work in my ever expanding catalogue, Lotus!
    ★ BACKGROUND NOTES ★
    予獨愛蓮之出淤泥而不染。
    - 周敦頤 (1017-1073)
    I love the lotus because while it is growing from mud, it is unstained.
    - Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073)
    The lotus flower (蓮, lián) is commonly seen in many Asian cultures. It is traditionally seen as a symbol of perfection, beauty and purity. Lotus root (藕, ǒu) is also a popular vegetable used in many Asian cuisines. My inspiration for Lotus comes mainly from the nature of the lotus flower. It is able to grow beautifully despite its muddy and undesirable origins. The flower is able to float over the surface of water and often lives for over a thousand years.
    In this work, I wanted to juxtapose the qualities of the lotus flower with identifiable human experiences. Lotus begins with a 'floating' theme of tranquility (a passing reference to Debussy's Arabesque No. 1) that is repeated and varied throughout the work. It is placed
    alongside a second theme that is more reflective and unstable. The structure of Lotus alternates between these themes, with the tranquility representing our moments of peace, and the instability representing our moments of hardship. The themes develop with
    increasing energy until Lotus concludes on a final moment of peace.

    Seems very Debussy inspired. Especially the descending melody in the right hand 🙂. Sounds lovely and I’ll for sure be playing this at somepoint

    I really appreciate it when percussionist compose fantastic pieces for 4.3 marimbas rather than making it a 5 octave piece for those who don’t have a 5 octave but also not making it too simple for a 4.3 like most 4.3 solos. Thanks Adam for this beautiful piece. I would love to see more 4.3 solos from you.

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for this! I agree with you, there are more players out there with 4.3s at the moment and we should be encouraging more serious music for that instrument :)

      @@AdamTanPercussion This is me being out of school with my 4.3 and having played some pretty difficult pieces (kieko abe ftw)
      And then being sad I need to move up those low notes on even easy peices.

    Sounds like something that would have been in a move like Up, during the beginning part where it shows the couple growing old together throughout the years. Beautiful.

    i’ve just been told by my parents that i shouldn’t even try to go into music. and that i don’t even practice.
    i’ve been practicing hours every day for the past 4 years in hopes of being able to go somewhere with percussion.
    not giving up just yet.
    also i know that that’s a pretty young person thing to be worried about but… i can’t see myself doing anything else.
    just wanna say that ur a huge inspiration, and that this piece brought tears to my eyes just now. and i’ve heard it a million times already.
    thank you.

    Hmmm, my review of this. It’s really really beautiful, and I love the recurring melodies and themes throughout the piece. I also really appreciate the contrast between the themes as they are sequenced next to each other. The chord progressions are beautiful as well. I’ll definitely be playing this in a solo ensemble with moon as well. Oh and the most important note- ITS ON A 4.3!!!

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duuude I'd love to hear you play it! Thank you so much for your wonderful words. And of course I love writing for 4.3, gives us extra challenges with the smaller bass line :)

      littlelamp100 it depends on how comfortable you are with the instrument. If you haven’t really played a marimba solo
      Before there are other pieces you
      Should begin with,as this piece has some advanced stuff in it. But if you think you’re up for it then I’d say go for it!

      I think what everyone said above is right! You can learn anything if you take it slowly and it will show you exactly what you need to learn to get the piece to the standard you want. And 2nd movement of mexican dances is pretty good!!

      Same here, does anyone know of any warm ups or exercises to obtain the chops to do this solo?

      @@mr.pwingles8959last week i finally performed this solo and didnt make it because our judge had a lot higher expectations than any other, but when i was learning and going on I just played the song I never really used warmups, its probably not the best way to go about it but thats just what I did

    Ugh now I have to decide whether to play Lotus or Moon for my first four-mallet solo. Moon seems easier for me except the one handed run at the beginning which is odd because even though I'm right handed I am much better with rolls and independents in my left hand!

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moon is the easier one for sure! The one handed run can be played with independent strokes too, I just like the feeling of a one handed lateral :)

    What’s your process for writing these solos and how long do they usually take to make? (Your solos are great and I love them!)

    Anybody have any recommendations for any dual tone/graduated sets of mallets for maybe a 5 octave marimba (rose wood)?

      @@AdamTanPercussion Thanks for the luck. Last year the instructors went heavy on putting your own idea into a piece. I thought Moon would be a good choice.
