I'm not really sure why people see this as a bad Rory moment? She offers to get student loans, she offers to change her major. Lorelai shuts down those suggestions, and it's understandable that Rory needs to step away for a bit. Feeling powerless can be incredibly frustrating, but the way she responds to her mother as she leaves makes it clear she's not mad at Lorelai. She just needs to process. I know Rory has gotten unpopular with a lot of fans of the show but I really don't see this as an incident that backs it up. Probably getting the loans and Lorelai helping with them after college if necessary would have been the best solution, but again Lorelai is the one who shuts that down.

Like we meet them once she’s exposed to the Gilmore wealth but she didn’t have that growing up. And I think she would’ve been successful as a society lady like Emily running fundraisers or a corporate wife or secretary. But Lorelei hated the very things Rory was good at so Rory had to keep pushing at the Journalist angle that wasn’t a fit for her.
