    I added the shortcuts to my most used programs to caps lock + 1, 2, 3.
    I even added multimedia controls and volume controls with caps lock + A,S,D,Q and W
    I took the idea from the chromebooks keyboard, which replace the caps lock key with something else

    To those that don't want to use the function keys, Ctrl Alt Tab is quite similar in the fact that it is near the centre of the screen so would take less time than moving the mouse and if you wanted to map it to a key, it would only take one (who needs F1 anyway?).

  • @ShinyVeggie

    Just in case you or anyone else wants some hints on autohotkey:
    To access your script even easier you can use caps as an additional modifier.
    In autohotkey you can type:
    SetCapsLockState, AlwaysOff
    ^ This will disable caps from ever turning on (phew, what a relief)
    After this you can just go to ahk and use:
    CapsLock & q::
    do something
    return
    Your left hand is probably already on top of that area of the keyboard anyway, so pressing that is incredibly quick. You can also swap 'q' to any other key.

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you figured that out!

    very useful. I'm surprised you're not using qttabbar (the one from wikidot, not the older sourceforge version). like Clover, it adds tabbed browsing to windows explorer, except qttabbar is much more mature with way more customization option than clover. it allows you to set hot keys for a ton of different browsing and file management actions in explorer which I'm sure you could put to use in scripts (like scrolling through file browsing tabs, going to certain favorite folder locations, etc). mainly though, having tabbed browsing with middle click on folders to open in a new tab just like chrome is a god send. all I can say is imagine 10 years ago when you would browse the internet and have to deal with 15 browser windows open because tabs weren't a thing. that's what you're doing now with file browsing and it's a huge PITA :)

I've done it, got the 2 dlls (x86 and x64) but don't have enough keyboards to try them. Since I don't have 10 devices, I'm not sure if the dll is embedded in the installer or simply replace the dlls in the library folder is enough.

    I'm not 100% sold on this. If you are the average Win user and normally work with at most, say, 5 different windows at the same time, I'd spare the F keys and use the Task View to switch through windows with a click.
    I personally have a Logitech mouse which lets me open Task View via mapping one key to do so (I guess most of non-bundled mouse have at least a programmable key to assign to something) and I'm able to switch windows in a second. Of course, alt+tab will do even better if you just need to swithc between the last two used windows.
    I loved the video and, for the sake of programming stuff, I started using AHK for a few tasks (i.e. for opening certain applications and for abbreviations), but I wouldn't give up my F keys. Rather, I prefer using other combinations of keys (even if that, of course, prevents me from leaving the right hand on my mouse).
    For the sake programming I also got rid of Word and switched to LaTex, by the way, and you guys should definitely do the same LOL

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In my ideal world, there would be no double-key commands.
      CTRL C wold just be a single button, "copy."
      CTRL Z would be a single button, "undo."
      And so on..... The problem with this, of course, is that human hands are only so big, and only have 5 fingers. You run out of space extremely quickly. That's WHY we use modifier keys... to save space. But to save that space, you have to sacrifice TIME. It takes longer to get your hand into position, and to physically press multiple keys.
      I hate wasting time.
      Macro keys allow you to turn a multi-button command into a single-button command. Now you can save time, at the expense of space.
      I have plenty of space on my desk.
      Now the trouble becomes physically MOVING your hand and even entire arm to where these macro buttons might be. Considering that I have an entire keyboard of macro buttons.... my arm is moving a lot indeed. And now we're back to wasting time.
      The solution is to eliminate the need to press a button at all. The solution is a direct brain-to-computer interface. Think of what you want, and it happens. No button mashing required.
      That's the theory anyway. The tech is still in its infant stages. But I believe it is the future...

    • @stefanocalio9
      @stefanocalio9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the answer. I get your point, by the way, and I think it's mostly a matter of personal preferences and need: in my case, as an off-site student, I don't have the physical space on my desk for an extra keyboard or "pad", so I'm kind of constrained in using double- or multi-key solutions. And, since I don't have the need to switch through windows, call functions etc etc (as an economist, my work mostly consist in coding using a statistical package while reading PDFs and/or writing down the results of my analysis in TeX Studio), the sum of wasted seconds boils down to a reasonable level.
      Still, a direct interface would be very cool and I agree we're probably not super far off from having that (we're already using multiple input options, even if, of course, none of them is that much "intimate" and "low level" yet).

    Hi Taran, love your videos.
    I bought a usb numpad and wanted to turn it into shortcut keys, but I'm still new to programming.
    I downloaded the two programs(autohotkeys and Interception), but it seems that I can also program the keys using the interception.exe, then how do I use autohotkeys in conjunction with interception?

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      what I do in interceptor is have a keystroke, say "numpad5 down" trigger F24 down, numpad5 down, numpad5 up, F24 up.
      Then in autohotkey, I have the code:
      #if (getKeyState("F24", "P"))
      F24::return
      ;here is where you put all the keypresses.
      numpad5::msgbox, lol
      #if
      you COULD program everything straight from interceptor... but i am not good enough to do that. if you figure it out, document your findings and publish it somewhere, and send me a link!

    Hm. I watched a lot of these videos from you now. And i thought about this: What about having a key, e.g. Ctrl and each time you press and release it, the keyboard goes into a different mode and each mode has different makros/routines attached to the buttons. Which basically means, you could cycle through infinite different keyboards on a single keyboard.
    Ctrl Ctrl Ctrl would access the third additional keyboard layout and press A would do something.
    Or an alternative: you could press Ctrl+Q for the first keyboard mode, Ctrl+W for the second, Ctrl+E for the third, ect. This way, you could technically have thousands of makros by just using the left hand on the left side of the keyboard alone.

    • @TaranVH

      Those are called "layers." People keep bringing them up, It's a bad solution for me.
      They sacrifice time, to save space. Not a good trade-off.

    Hey Taran is there a particular reason why you're still using Word 2007? Are there some features that have been removed in later versions or is it just what you have lying around at the office?

      You should definitely upgrade to 2010 ... and then stick with it.
      MSO 2007 is like Vista and 2010 equals to Windows 7, IYKWIM.

    Hi Taran!
    First, I wanna say THX for the grat script. Just downloaded it, and it works great. I use it to switch between explorer, firefox, android studio and word. But I also sometimes want to see the performance-screen in the task manager. What can I do to make AHK press ctrl+shit+esc, and then 3x tab and 1x right arrow for me?

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nnnkatze
      F5::
      Send ^+{esc}
      sleep 100
      Send {tab 3}
      Send {right}
      Return
      Or something like that. Read the getting started guide.

      Taran Van Hemert Task Manager opens, but when the task manager window is activated, the other shortcuts (F1, F2, F3, F4, WinF4) don't work. I'll read the guide, maybe I can find something. Nevertheless, thanks for your help.

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nnnkatze ah, yes.
      Be grateful for that.
      Task manager seems to override eeeeevvvvverything, including AHK. So I you make a script that gets stuck in a loop, or disables the keyboard, or whatever... And task manager still works completely normally. So yeah, you'll have to click to get away from it!

    Hey, does anyone know how to make a script like this- Normally when I press F2 on windows, it's the shortcut for renaming files. However, I have dozens of keys especially alphabet keys mapped to macros. I tried assigning escape to a function called Suspend, but it's a forgettable thing to first press F2 and then escape and then the system goes haywire(cause I'm typing with all hotkeys firing off). How can I make it so that when I press F2, the hotkeys temporarily get disabled and then I can type text normally and then after finishing typing the hotkeys again get re enabled?

    Heres a script to grab the active windows name and scroll through them, this way only uses one hotkey but you have to have the type of window you want to scroll through open, like file explorer chrome window etc.
    ; desc: gets the active window name and scrolls through windows of the same name
    ^j:: ;the hotkey
    WinGet, OutputVar, ProcessName, A ;gets proccess name from active window
    SameVar:=StrReplace(OutputVar, ".", "blue") ; replaces "." from the variable with "blue" because it does not work as a groupadd title
    SameVar:=StrReplace(SameVar, "+", "blue") ; replaces "+" from var name
    GroupAdd, %SameVar%, ahk_exe %OutputVar% ; adds the process to the group with the group title of the same name minus illegal characters like "."
    GroupActivate, %SameVar%, ; activates the group
    return

    ok strange question, I have a smart plug socket and i want to control it using a hot key. i found a relatively easy way of doing it but its slow and not reliable, first i use IfTTT (If receive webhooks GET web request THEN turn switch on) now this is related because i use AHK to send that GET request but for some reason it triggers twice sometimes and sometimes not at all. if anyone wants to help that would be cool. or even point me in the right direction. i can make a quick video explaining this if someone thinks they can help. anyway taren you are the AHK king is there a simple way of sending HTTP GET requests using AHK or another program that allows me to use hotkeys to send GET requests?

    Im having a huge issue, I dont want to switch to the application. I want to use the keys to control OBS Studio while streaming. Meaning i dont want to tab out. AHK is setup with the right hotkey but the key does not work unless i have obs selected, but if i do the hotkey on my normal keyboard by pressing the button combo it works in any window.

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uuuuuh, this question is missing a lot of important information. I'm not sure what you're asking.
      are you using more than 1 keyboard?
      Do you have AHK scripts overlapping some of the standard OBS shortcuts?
      Are you saying that a simple AHK script, designed to simply press a series of keys for you, does NOT work to control OBS.... but physically pressing those keys manually, DOES work?

    • @dylanmaniatakes
      @dylanmaniatakes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taran Van Hemert yes more than one keyboard, no only one script running(i followed your newest tutorial) and the hotkeys work just onpy if obs is the selected window

    • @TaranVH
      @TaranVH  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought that OBS's shortcuts are supposed to work at ALL TIMES, no matter what application you have activated...? Is that the case? If so, but if your AHK scripts aren't working, you may have to implement a physical solution --- have your keyboard itself execute the macro. So you'd need a techkeys keyboard, or a razer, logitech etc keyboard that has built-in macro keys.
      It also may be possible for an AHK script to activate the OBS window temporarily, WITHOUT "raising" it (thus keeping it hidden in the background) , and then send the command you want, and then switch back the the application you were previously using.
      I found a thread that talks about this concept, but they did not seem to come up with a fully working method, though they do discuss some potential ideas: autohotkey.com/board/topic/29270-keep-window-focus-on-one-app-while-sending-input-to-another/

    WinGetClass, Title, A

    GroupActivate, taranpdfs, r
    WinActivate ahk_class %Title%

      It looks like Corsair CUE 2.0 CAN indeed launch programs directly. So yes, I could do that. But then I'd have to have a huge folder with one script for every single function WITH parameters. This is what I did for the stream Deck, since I had run out of normal keys. It's more of a PITA to deal with, AND you can end up with scripts massively interfering with one another, as they all try to run at the same time, and don't wait in line like they should.
      It's often better to just trigger the functions with keyboard shortcuts. ;) (ones that use the CTRL modifier so they never type anything in.)

      You are right and we've got the same PC peripheral's EXACTLY just mine is 5960X :) Downloaded your right mouse move playhead in premiere and it's awesome! IJust bought 3x Panasonic GH5 to do my cooking videos and I'm pretty happy with them! Just bought 2x corsair K65 RGB LUX with 3x G700s which I store in closet for a later date when they stop manufacturing those :D like I don't want to have that K95 scenario..ever :D. Amazing how far you as a group went , fully amazing up travel here on Yt!! There is a AHK script that you can move windows from anywhere in the window frame I am using for quite some time and its wayyyy more easier to use than the slim bar on top it's called Easy Window Dragging , look it up :) I set mine as ctrl+alt + right mouse and !` to suspend. Cheers man! Hi to LTT !:)
