When you put the brilliance of Al Stewart's lyrics together with the genius of Alan Parson's production, you have something so unique, it's incomparable and timeless. They will play this in 100 years and it will still be loved and enjoyed.

Al Stewart is a great musician and singer, I mean to say that he released this song in 1976 and it still sounds so good now and the guy still tours solo and in a group, transposed all the instruments to the guitar, when he does perform solo is amazing! I really love his song "Time Passage", that's my favorite!

I truly love watching young people discover the songs that were every day common place during my adolescence and young adulthood! Basically the 1970's sucked, BUT our music was GREAT! Getting into the top 40 and staying there was a true accomplishment.

My dear Cynthia... I want to thank you with all of my heart for finally reacting to my suggestion and I think you haven't regretted it. ;-) If you could only have seen me watching this video with a constant smile on my face and in my heart. This was - to be honest - one of the loveliest reaction videos I have ever seen from you. Watching you enjoying this song needs no further explanations, indeed. If you want to hear some more from Al Stewart, I can recommend "Time passages (the whole album, there is no bad song on it !)", "On the border", "Broadway Hotel" and "Running man". I'm sure you will love all of these songs as much as you loved this one here.
Sending you virtual love, hugs and kisses... your friend Gerry

A perfect example of letting the actual music create deep emotions instead of being too verbose, which most modern singers are.As a singer you don't have to fill every minute of a song with vocals.Lyrics can affect emotions as well but most people react to the tune first and then listen to the lyrics. If people aren't taken by the song they won't listen to it at all.The sax solo in this song is just magnificent and sends it to a new level. One of my favourite songs ever.

The way this song was created is beyond bizarre (and a long story). But that was his thing. He was making movies in his mind when he created songs so it's not surprising watching Casablanca influenced the lyrics. Year of the cat came from a Vietnamese book his girlfriend had open. lol
Alan Parsons is one of the best producers there has been and he had a lot to do with the sound on this album.
As a guitar person, I was always drawn to the Spanish guitar on On The Border (another hit song on this album) but it didn't have anything to do with Al Stewart. Alan Parsons thought Spanish guitar would sound good on it so Peter White, who neither Parsons or Stewart knew could play guitar to that level stepped up and did it in a couple takes.
It's amazing how some of these songs come together.

I've seen Al Stewart live three times and it's always a great show. On top of everything else, the guy is really funny! His live album called Live / Indian Summer is one of the greatest live albums ever produced. The quality of the songs and the musicianship of everyone on stage is beyond belief, as is the flawless production. Incredible music!
Some of my favourite studio songs by Al Stewart are: Lord Grenville, On the Border, Broadway Hotel, Old Admirals, Roads to Moscow, Valentina Way, Life In Dark Water, The Palace of Versailles, Song On the Radio, Running Man, Merlin's Time, Rocks In the Ocean, Here In Angola, and Princess Olivia. From the live portion of the Live / Indian Summer album I would recommend If It Doesn't Come Naturally, Leave It, Year Of the Cat and Nostradamus/World Goes to Riyadh.
    Cheers, Cynthia!

This is a song about a man traveling in a different country who sees this exotic creature “in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain”. She captivates him immediately and all she will say about herself references a year in the Vietnamese Zodiac calendar “The Year of the Cat”. She might be Asian but the reference to “blue tiled walls of the market stalls” seem to point to Morocco or some other North African setting. The man ends up spending the night with this exotic beauty waking the next morning to the realization that he is going to stay with her a while longer. This alludes to the possibility that while he knows he will leave her someday he will never forget her and may regret leaving at all.
Old cliche but they do not write songs like this anymore.

The more I listen to this the more attached I become to the poetic lyrics, his vocals, the complete and ingenous arrangement, the Alan Parsons engineering (who else could've done a better job?) and the players. It is my opinion that there is no song from the 20th century more beautiful than this masterpiece by a master musician. Thank you for loving this as we all do and thanks for your reaction Your face says it all.

Thanks for this! I saw Al Stewart live, playing an acoustic threesome, several years ago. He played all of this album, plus a load more. And he explained what most of the songs really meant - often not what you thought! It was just brilliant. As is this whole album, and plenty more. Check out the live version of "Nostradamus", with "The World goes to Riyadh", or the live version of "Roads to Moscow". And, of course, the superb "On the Border".

A study details and forwarded for you: Co-written by Peter Wood, "Year of the Cat" is a narrative song written in the second person whose protagonist, a tourist, is visiting an exotic market when a mysterious silk-clad woman appears and takes him away for a gauzy romantic adventure. On waking the next day beside her, the tourist notes that his tour bus has left without him, and decides to stay where he is for the time being.
