For majority of my life I have been a theist, but, I questioned a lot of things as a kid. For example, in northern India there is a belief associated with eclipses that one shouldnt go out during solar eclipse. Another example, which made me uncomfortable with beliefs was that one should not sleep with their head pointed in the north direction. And most of the religious people around me used to provide absurd logic for these sets of beliefs to make them sound scientific. They would often blame it on earth's magnetic field, or the rays coming from sun in case of eclipse colliding with moon to create carcinogenic rays. But these answers never satisfied me. Interestingly, I used to look for answers to these questions in religious texts, because my belief was that my belief in God (specially Krishna) would save me from any of these troubles and so as a believer I dont need to fear eclipses or the direction in which my head faces while I am sleeping.
Fortunately my transition had nothing to do with anything bad happening to me. But things changed when I started observing some sort of discrimination, sexism, racism, casteism etc., in nearly all the religious texts. Interestingly, it all started with the academic study of Quran and the Shariat Laws in 2014 (I was in law school and Shariat was part of the curriculum). Initially my relatives and family were happy that I was openly criticizing them. But little did they know, it was just the beginning. I moved on to Bible, then to Ramayana and Mahabharata and later on to the Vedas. By the time I finished with them it was already 2018, and now the same people were not happy with my criticisms of their own God/s and beliefs. I could literally see their hypocrisy and whataboutery dripping all over the place. During Covid pandemic in early 2020, I was introduced to Vimoh's Instagram which gave me another set of perspectives to look at the idea of God/s and beliefs. That was precisely the time I started actively reading about atheism and became a gnostic atheist. Later, over conversations on live calls with Vimoh, I read more and became an agnostic atheist. And then in one of yours last livestreams with Vimoh as guest, you dropped another bomb as to the whole idea of knowledge and belief. Now I only know that I dont believe in any God/s, but I dont know if I will be comfortable enough to qualify my position as agnostic atheism. 😅 Labels have been hard for me to keep.
I am glad I was introduced to Vimoh's channel and from there to your channel as a lot of my ideas about atheism and rationality have been influenced by perspectives I get from both of you. Keep enlightening us. Much respect and power to you guys. 😍

Thanks for sharing! I feel your path of "knowledge" is the best way to get out of religion. The hypocrites don't understand that there are bad ideas in every religion and the only way to get rid of them is to look at them from the neutral stand point of atheism.

Many of them leave their religion not because of any intellectual vacuity it has but rather it is purely for personal reasons..
When you do a headcount of irreligious people in India, you would find that the majority of them are from the Abrahamic faiths and that too especially Islam.
In Hinduism there are only 2 strong things that affect or interfere in a person's personal life and thus it has been forced practice, namely Caste System/Untouchability and Marriage Horoscope.
All the other beliefs and practices in Hinduism do not interfere in a person's personal life in an extreme manner, hence many Hindus don't tend to leave their religion in large numbers as the people from abrahamic religions do.
Generally Hindus are not forced to go to their temples or forced to pray or are forced to follow rituals except in some cases, that too in orthodox/ritualistic religious families... Otherwise a Hindu is free to do what he/she pleases and their religion would never interfere in their personal lives
Hence, it's not for Intellectual reasons but rather for Personal reasons why a large majority of people discard their religion.
PS : Sati was thankfully abolished..

Yeah, IF you can't provide logic for what you believe, don't force it over others. That solar eclipse thing is very relatable.

I have seen many unethical theists in my life but there are many more ethical theists. Also I have observed that atheists are generally ethical since they advocate for rationality but I have also met an arrogant atheist too. So it seems being atheist or theist have nothing to do with being moral.

The reason fanatics are strong and trying to be united in their worldview and especially traditionalist ideas of the holy cow is mainly due to external pressure from Islamists and missionaries.
Otherwise India has a huge majority of 'mind my own business' type moderate hindus and raitha nationalists as compared to the fanatic ultra devotional traditionalists whose ultimate activity is to enforce traditions. 🔷

Anybody who wants to get a correct logical perspective of the phenomenon of religion, then one must study one of the greatest Sociologists of all time and his work on religion. The Elementary Forms Of Religious Life by Emile Durkheim. 🟣
