Lyon 2014 - 1000 mile road trip in Edwardian racers

  • Firstly, all you armchair directors... don't leave a comment telling me I should have left the music off so you can hear the cars. With no bodywork to shield the mic it's just wind noise once you start moving at speed :)
    One of the most exciting - and hilarious trips of my life. Driving all the way from the UK to Lyon in 100 year old cars to revisit the site of the 1914 Grand Prix. The cars were the 1904 200hp Darracq (an original land speed record car!), the JAP GN (a beautiful wooden chassis GN with an exceedingly rare V8 JAP aero engine), the Monarch (a special powered by a Curtiss Aero engine) and the De Dion special - also Curtiss powered. These are just a few silly clips which I managed to grab while clinging onto the car. For a fuller picture of the trip please visit the flickr gallery... flic.kr/s/aHsk2fWcsA

      The dilemma! If it was me I’d be totally selfish and just soak up the experience. There again, it isn’t me! So, more filming please, could watch this for hours. Well done chaps and chapesses!

    the more i look the more i see Stefan. The idea of using charlie's piece (music) to structure the video is brilliant. A great counterpoint to the raw, brutal forces that we witness from the off (the two kids covering their ears give it away), yet the structure and relaxed tone of the music belies the brutal realities of war (WW1 engines, fighter planes, castles etc) .... and of course just as in war, the magic of humanity re-emerges, the humour, good will, camaraderie, daring do... the warp and weft of life! ... lovely stuff, bravo!

    gotta love a fuel tank mounted directly on top of the roasting hot engine - not only does it ensure a nice gravity feed, it also ensures in the event of a crash that there will almost certainly be a nice toasty fire to warm the cockles of your heart in your final, agonising moments. Pure nostalgia, feels just like WW1.

    That is such a wonderful video... beautifully edited and very atmospheric with the soft piano music. I have a technical question please- I would like to know what RPM more or less the darracq is running when on country roads. 600, 700? That is such a magnificent engine... incredibly compact for 25 liters

    • @StefanMarjoram
      @StefanMarjoram  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for the comment! The Darracq will cruise at 84mph at 1000rpm. I think full power is at 1200rpm - but a lot of the time when pootling through villages (or waiting for people to catch up) the car is turning over much more slowly. If you're running low on fuel you can even switch off one bank, making it an economical in-line 4 cylinder 12.5 litre :)

    Stefan, What camera were you using for that early footage as Mark accelerates and lifts-off on that long straight ? You can almost feel the surge acceleration. Watching that is a great way to escape lock-down.

      I shot everything (stills too) with a little Canon Eos M. For the video I used the kit lens which has some stabilisation - but it's still pretty shaky. Being on the Darracq I really didn't have a lot of luggage space and reluctantly had to leave my usual DSLR at home. I have to say, while it's reasonable for video, the little EOS M takes great photos (especially with the 22m lens). Definitely a good choice if space is limited.

      Glad you liked it! All the cars in our little group made it there and back. They usually do as they're owned by people who use and fettle the cars all the time - that way they usually get an early warning of any looming issues. A lot of them have built the cars themselves too - so they literally know them inside and out :)

      I know it can be frustrating to have music on a car video sometimes but once you’re at speed on these open vehicles all you get is wind noise - which is REALLY unpleasant to listen to. Charlie playing the piano was a really memorable moment of the trip and I’m so glad I got it on camera - it holds the whole film together. Have a watch of the Beast of Turin trailer for some pure unadulterated engine noise :)

      Having a goal like visiting the site of the Grand Prix is really good. It gives the trip a purpose. The bonus with the early GPs is that they were held on public roads so you can seek them out and drive them again. It really puts the efforts of the drivers into perspective too.
