I am a 66-year-old lifelong single guy with no kids. I am not rich but I have more than I need. I'm already a slave to 'stuff' I own so accumulating more isn't appealing. I have politely declined every "once in a lifetime opportunity" ever offered to me. I never click on hyperlinks embedded in emails and I've ignored a fortune in cash & merchandise I've "won" over the years. In a past video Paul notes the distinction between a victim and a volunteer. Keep your wallet closed and you won't be scammed. I won't travel anywhere without doing extensive research on safety and knowing the do's and don'ts. I get all the valor I'll ever need knowing I'm the son of a selfless, soft-spoken WWII combat veteran who devoted his entire life to his family. I hope some day to visit the Philippines and perhaps live there. Up to this point I've lived entirely for myself, I'd like to spend some of my remaining years volunteering to help others. We'll see.

You are definitely right! I am not rich, but like to help. Where I live , lots of homeless people. I offered to help one homeless person and this person took advantage of me. Now, I still help but no longer help like before. I live in California, too many homeless folks around. What are your thoughts on these?

A great video, Paul! If it sounds too good to be true - it probably is (greed). And beware of people giving unsolicited compliments about clothes, hair, or shoes you're wearing (ego). It was a trick I remember a drug company salesman turned psychology personal development coach once taught us in a work training course to use when building rapport with people..
Umm, also trust but verify (ask the person calling something that only you and them know?). That said, compared to many other places, the Philippines still sounds like a very safe, welcoming and beautiful place to live. Still not put off tho! Ten years and counting until I have saved enough to retire comfortably. Tick-tock, the wait is truly mind-numbingly infuriating!!

Your guest, Ian is spot on and it's a shame that there are a lot of bad folks who have reinvented themselves in Southeast Asia. When in doubt, do your research.
Btw, I'm a former Internal Auditor who has worked on Fraud cases, which resulted in jail/prison time. I can tell you that a lot of fraudsters are actually very friendly, outgoing and likeable. Only use your gut feel if it is warning you of a potential scam. Fake/shell companies, sure-fire investments, sick family, billing schemes, identity theft, fake reimbursements - these are only a few ways you can be defrauded. I never wanted to put my client's money at risk because they were retired and could not go out and do what they did again to get what they have. When bank CDs went from paying 10% + to 3% a lot of the people went from eating steak to beans and they took the risk of getting into the stock market and lost their ass. I would put them into annuities that were safe and backed up and gave them around 6-7% with a guarantee to never fall below 3-4%. people who embezzled from corporations and get caught and do time never learn their lesson. They always get out and do it again, it's like an addiction, he stole $1.68 million from two hospitals but he had over $3 million to pay back in restitution, where did he get that money from? These people seem to be able to sniff out the money and how to get at it. He says he was with the Goodwill during a disaster, that is a very good way to embezzle money as it is very hard to audit where that money goes for disaster relief. and he was CEO of quite a few hospitals overseas for a very short time. I wonder why he moved on so quick? And these big time scammers are always on the lookout for an accomplice. I would bet some money that he is already looking for an accomplice, or already has one lined up and planning his next scheme.

Anyone who tries to convince you he has a get rich quick scheme you need to ask yourself one question. Why wouldn't they just use this scheme to get rich all by themselves? If it was legit a financial institution would lend them money. If the financial institution thinks its too much of a risk you should too. People don't help strangers get rich, they try and separate you from your money. The compounding of interest overtime is your best bet at being financially stable.

Usually banking personnel are alert to seniors who are withdrawing large amounts of money and will check with their manager who inturn will save their customer from situations like what your Dad experienced.

My cousin in the Philippines (north of me Quezon City) was a Seal. Legit. Weird how two cousins who barely knew each other ended up in the PHilippines. He grew up in Alaska and is much older and I grew in Boston. We are no neighbors by accident but Seals do exist.

Paul, this was a very interesting video that hopefully, opened up the eyes for many tourists, WHEREVER they may be heading to. Even here in the great USA, there are tons and tons of SCAMMERS calling people on the phone, sending fake mail to homes, including sending fraudelent emails!! I mean lots and lots of this stuff continues to hapoen each and EVERY day!
Dont trust ANYONE, be mindful of your surroundings, and always be vigilant of people approaching you for ANY favor!

My suggestion in the case of the fake voice would be to ask the person a question only the real person would be able to answer. I've used a similar method when a scammer called and pretended to be from my bank.
