Best video of this procedure for sure. Thank you for posting and taking the time to do a great job. I am at 50000miles and in need of shim work. Checked clearances last year and I was still in spec. Winter job now... Thanks again. Rick
Thanks for the video, I was just checking what's involved for when I do mine. It's easier than most Japanese bikes I've done because you aren't removing the timing chain and it's nice having two individual cylinders vs a 4 in line, so less chance of getting confused over which bucket/shim you are working on.
Paul, thanks for a great video! I'm doing this on Sunday for a lady friend of mine who also happens to have a black 2016 R12R that she's wrapped here and there with blue. We are definitely doing the plugs and we'll see about the shims. I now know how to go about this! I'm definitely subscribing and we'll probably binge your channel this weekend. :) -jaysbigadventure
Nice job mate. Good clear concise video, just what I like. I have 2013 r1200gs lc after having 2 r1150, which I knew everything about. The LC is just so different I haven't done my own valve adjustments on it. I never pay dealer for this stuff and feel strongly that people should do their own maintenance when possible. Videos like this help. Thanks. (Love the end pic)
I like to do my own maintenance because I know there is no one else who will take the care I do, on my own motorcycle, to ensure everything is spot on and nothing is damaged in the process. I've not been impressed with some of the work the dealers have done on my various motorcycles and other vehicles over the years. Usually it's only a couple of hours of gentle and careful work to save hundreds and know it's done right. The only issue with anything new is ensuring you keep your warranty intact.
Great and informative video, thank you! I plan on doing mine quite soon so you have been most helpful. It seems I’m currently running the same tyres as you(because I couldn’t get hold of Road 5s at the time), and you’re not afraid of dirt roads either! I bought mine for it’s ability to go on dirt but tour and be sporty when I wanted as well.
Nice work and i can appreciate the satisfaction of one doing it themselves. However, i'll be paying for it a 2nd time very shortly as i'm just not the mechanically minded type.
Looks easier than my Venture was. But my advantage there was I had a bunch of shims from a previous bike and had selection. Looks like a first time guy is going to do the job twice at least. Or be without wheels for a few days waiting on shims.
Wow a very good video, thanks for sharing your experience with this bike. I am thinking of buying one like this. What brand of torque wrench did you use and the brand if digital Vernier caliper as well ? I have both in Harbor Freight, but are they good enough for this task ?
Your first valve measurement was incorrect by inserting the feeler gauge between the rocker arm and the valve stem. You later corrected the measurement between the cam and rocker
I appreciate your video . Very well done . I have to adjust the valves on my r1200rt 2018 ( 32000 km.) . Thank you Armand Larochelle PS : which is the diameter of shim ? Do you think shims WISECO are OK .
Good vídeo. One question... Do You know the measurement of older shim when new? Perhaps It is still posible to read the number on It. So we know how many kms from one to other. Excuse my english... Anyway, very helpful video. Adiós amigo!!!
Excellent video! Thanks for taking the time. Will be doing mine soon prior to my long ride next month. One question: Where did you buy the shims you needed? I looked (for example) on the online fiche for ASCycles.com and they seem to sell these in sets of 8 (of the same thickness) and I would almost certainly not need 8 of any one thickness! In the video you got 2 in a package so clearly you bought htem from somewhere that sold them loose.
Paul, you should add this information to the description. I don't often read comments (and almost never on a mobile app), and others may be the same. I would not have seen this particular correction if not for your post in an R1200R forum.
Great video but watching you bent over like that hurts my back and knees / BMW should go back to rocker arm heads lot of people don't like running around getting the right size shims you probably only get a few more H.P. Out of the bike

Thanks for all the details! Appreciate the camera angles and voice over commentary

Very helpful video.
Thank you for well structured instructions!
More helpful videos are expected.

Great work man! Thanks for going to all the effort to put this together. A++
Not sure if you mentioned it, but about how many miles were on the bike when you did the adjustment?
Clear and concise. Very helpful many thanks
Nice job Paul, That wood pecker was annoying :)..... Nice jacket too !!!!
Excelent video, doing that on my r1200gs next weekend. Nice routes!
Looks easier than my Venture was. But my advantage there was I had a bunch of shims from a previous bike and had selection. Looks like a first time guy is going to do the job twice at least. Or be without wheels for a few days waiting on shims.
Paul thanks so much for you video.
Have a question how often whould you replace the shims.
Thanks so much.

Thank you. You are right.
Great easy to follow video. Many thanks
I rather paying you to do my 2017 GS Rallye. The love of your hands on this engine is obvious.

the shims are about 8.82 or 8.83 mm in diameter. i checked i don't know about wiseco shims.
Good job. It is on my to do list.
This is very helpful. I'm assuming the R1200GS is the same. I was afraid I'd have mess with the timing chain. BMW made it stupid simple!
How many miles on your bike to do this adjustment ?
ottimo video dove hai preso le pastiglie calibrate? grazie
Bob's BMW in Jessup, MD, USA
Are there no factory alignment marks on the cams? You mentioned you used your nail polish when installing the lady side cams. Good job on the video!
Mr. Rodger, Where did you buy the shims you needed ? two piece? Thanks for the video!
sorry i took so long to reply. i just saw your question. i bought the shims from Bob's BMW website.
@@psrodgers ,Thank you, exactly there I requested them.
thank you for this amazing video
Very informative and helpful!

Excuse my english...
Anyway, very helpful video.
Adiós amigo!!!
I do not know the size of the older shim when new. I couldn't read any number on it. But your english is perfecto!
Muchas Thanks!!!! See You.
I have the identical bike and torque wrench, does 7.5lb ft seem to work well?
Great video Thanks.

My question is the same .. where did you get the shims? Thanks for the great video, very helpfull.
Sorry for the delayed response. I have not bought any shims yet. The valves were just within spec so I have a little time.
Would you mind telling me the diameter of the shims? Thank you.
I goofed on the clearance measurement. See comment and reply below.

Thank you. I will do that.
When did they "do away" with the shims. Or did they? I was told my 2018 doesn't have shims ?
I don't know about the 2018, but my 2016 does have shims.
It has shims!! That's for sure! On my channel you can watch this job on a 2018 GS. Greetings from Germany, Bernd
Good video, thank you!
why is this necessary ? how many miles you had on this bike at this point ?
Nice work!
Thank you very much . Armand Larochelle
Super video ! OK ! ODO ? km
Haha, listen the woodpecker (2:10)
