I love how she showed the little children at the end with bags being passed to them symbolizing how parents can pass their "baggage" down to their children...creating a never ending cycle
This is the music we need to hear today, music with a message to let go of the toxicity built up over our lifetimes. Not clinging to a love unworthy or unhealthy, just for the sake of love. We don't have to cause ourselves pain for the ones we love. Sure times get tough, and the road ahead is unpaved and bumpy. But find someone who holds your hand through the storm, not someone who leaves you weather the storm on your own. Actions will always speak louder than words. When someone shows you their true colors, dont try to repaint them to what you wish they were. Do you boo boo 💖
I love how she teaches black woman self love in this song, and at the same time doesn't disrespect the black male either. She covers so much in this song in just a few words! She truly was a gift to the black community!
Kara: Honest question, absolutely no sarcasm, meant here. WHERE....is the self-respect in having MULTIPLE baby daddies? Erykah Badu was a FRAUD, just like Brandy Norwood, Ciara Harris-Wilson and Mariah Carey!!
The message in the song is: Ladies, know your self worth, be independent of yourself and always be ready to hold your own when in a relationship and he suddenly wants to be free and don't cling onto misfortunes in your life. Put them behind you and move on.
Respectfully Ms.Dee from one man’s point of view of this song. I feel she was saying Women should heal completely from all trauma not just relationships with men but also relationship with moms dads uncles aunties cousins boss men co workers siblings childhood friends the neighbor next door the creep up the street all of them before entering another relationship dragging them bags into every new situation might cause her to miss a good thing with a good man because she touting around all that baggage of her past. She can have a great man that loves her but if she doesn’t love herself enough to let those bags go no one can do that for her. Self love makes it better. I’m a black black man I mean like ghetto black I love my sisters but it’s super hard just being that. We don’t wanna deal with all that shhh too I’m sorry to the 90’s babies in my life let it go I’m a great man but all this crap you brought with you starting to spill over into my man cave😂😂😂
Lol no the message in the song is telling women to deal with your trauma so you don't weigh down yourself and others to point that you can't accept love. Deal with your shit so you can love and be loved freely.
I finally understand what this song means, its not about a person carrying objects, its about the negative thoughts traditions we hold and conjure in our minds that ultimately hold us back from manifesting what we souly desire
Feelin this in my soul on this cold Sunday morning. Brings tears to my eyes that at 21 I’ve held on to such baggage already. But working on letting it all go for MYSELF. May God give me the strength I need. Let’s do better ladies. Gotta start packin light! Much luv & blessings to you all! 🙏🏽💙
Peep the little girl in the green, that was me :) I don't remember much, but I do remember that each of the little girls were supposed to look like each of the older ones. I remember I wanted to wear red, which so happened to be Erykah haha. From what my mom told me, Erykah was very nice and she took pictures with all of us. Such a classic song.
is it really you! she looks like you to. you must be so proud of yourself! but, most importantly thank your parents for giving you the opportunity to be in this powerful video because all kids dont get this opportunity. SO BE THANKFUL.
This song is really about a person missing out on a life carrying their problems on their shoulders taking it out on the world instead of loving herself what's for you is for you and if anybody come in the middle of that that's not for you other word accept me for who I am and if you can't kick rocks that's my take on this song
The SPIRITLIGHT Surround yourself with straight up lol loving this thread right now and your words, well they had a way of making more sense of things for me as well as I get older... Gracias ✨💜

I love how she included Queen Afua in here , also incorporated the chakra colors. I’ve never understood this song as a kid but being 21 now this song resonates so much.
Nice to not be alone. Took a while for the song to fully sink in and resonate. This song and something my auntie said to me about not carrying other people's baggage has inspired me to paint again.
I'm just blown away by her ability to craft a song that blends every day life with spirituality so seamlessly. She's given me more than any university course I've ever taken. She's a legend.
Serious question. If you could go back with only the knowledge of how E.B.'s music and university would affect you, would you still go to university? I don't know what you went to school for but I don't see the correlation in the two. Music is a major part of my life, it's helped me find out who I am as a person but it can't teach me about my career in hvac which I also love. I hope you don't find offense in me trying to understand
As a fellow Pisces, I love Erykah Badu... Her singing is... Ethereal, otherworldly, mystical and soulful. She uses allegories and metaphors that convey deep wisdom in a very dreamy, transcendental way.

I’ve listened to this song for years but today it really really hit me. Like really. Just in the shower exfoliating after a long weekend and shutting down yesterday. The words got through to the core of me. This is a milestone in my journey to healing. Sending love to all ❤️ #2021

i feel like she talking about about baggage people carry around to relationship to relationship. and it holds them back from where they need to go. Like the part when she say your gonna miss your bus. i think she means your gonna miss your destiny and destination on where your so supposed to go because your living in the past. i love this song i feel it soooo much. time to start letting it go ladys and move on to better ☺😊

The thing that I like most about this video, besides its truthful message, are the different complexions Black women have. What happened to the days when Black women of every complexion was appreciated? Love yourself first!!!!
gemni690 I agree with you that people should love themselves first.. but that's the problem with a lot of black american girls/boys/women/men.. they don't love themselves nor their own skin complexion. A lot of black americans are quick to tear down another sista/brotha who may be light skinned or dark skinned.. because they themselves are insecure people. I believe if people loved themselves they wouldn't need and seek validation from anyone else nor would they care about whether or not a black mans preference may be light skinned black females over dark skinned black females.
I have loved this so very wise song since it came out. Remember, people - 'pack light!!' Erykah Badu is a favorite of mine with all of her beautifully sung and produced songs.

the amount of significant modern meanings within this music video and lyrics that are still relevant today is just marvelous ♡ I'm an 00' baby but this song wasn't part of my childhood songs, but I'm glad I'm listening to it today.
Being 37 I always knew what she meant even when I was 16 when the song came out, but now being an adult this song just sings so high to understanding your higher self. Ladies let it go…….
Nickel Bag Lady - Drug issues Booty Bag Lady - Body issues Paper Bag Lady - Colorism Issues Punching Bag Lady - Domestic Abuse Issues Baby Bag Mama - Child Support issues
When I was a kid, my parents always used to talk about how Erykah was so weird and always changed the channel when her music came on. But now as an adult im seeing all these subliminals and deeper messages in her music. It's a shame my parents didn't let me watch.
I didn’t grow up in the 90s but I definitely felt in my spirit that many black people called her weird. It’s unfortunate but we’re actually wired to judge the ones in our group who express themselves in a different way, even if they’re uplifting our community 🥴. Lol her music is also good as hell but, I do understand everyone has different music taste.
I'm a black male and at a predominately white college, and listening to Erykah's voice calms my spirit in a way when I get tired of my environment. I feel like the messages she instilled in her music then would be so beneficial to young black women nowadays. Another thing that captivates me is her beauty and body, which is completely the opposite from what we see in music nowadays. Sadly music, (especially rap), has become about the lighter skin tone, and twerking. Smh, Erykah is truly an angel, and her success and impact will never be duplicated again.
***** not at all saying you have to be a particular race, what I was trying to emphasize is that as a young man Erykah represents a totally different style and fluency in presenting her music compared to the music nowadays. And for clarity purposes a lot of white people at my college listen to today's rap and r&b music and have no concept of the artists who laid the foundation and actually made real music. It's like comparing Rae Sremmurd to Bone Thungs N Harmony. There's a big discrepancy there as quality goes. But regardless man I appreciate your feedback and was not trying at all to make this a race thing. Stay up, bro.
Wow, for the 1st time, i get every word in this song, pack light ladies, get rid of garbage and baggage in your life or opportunities and chances will pass you by (miss your bus) as you drag along your bags(baggage). What a beautiful message. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks to this lady I stopped chemicals in my head. And started appreciating my Natural Hair and the WORLD OF WRAPS...ALL COLORS SHAPES AND SIZES.... PEACE TO YOU MY SISTA..ONE LOVE

Beautiful voice to listen to at anytime.
Being 37 I always knew what she meant even when I was 16 when the song came out, but now being an adult this song just sings so high to understanding your higher self. Ladies let it go…….

Good analogy.
Grocery Bag Ladies- weight issues
When I was a kid, my parents always used to talk about how Erykah was so weird and always changed the channel when her music came on. But now as an adult im seeing all these subliminals and deeper messages in her music. It's a shame my parents didn't let me watch.
I didn’t grow up in the 90s but I definitely felt in my spirit that many black people called her weird. It’s unfortunate but we’re actually wired to judge the ones in our group who express themselves in a different way, even if they’re uplifting our community 🥴. Lol her music is also good as hell but, I do understand everyone has different music taste.
The so called weird ones/outcasts/black sheep/eccentric are usually the trendsetters ahead of their time that simple minds can’t understand
Happy 52nd Birthday Erykah Badu!(Born February 26, 1971)😃🥳🎂🎉🎊🎈🎁🍾🥂🌷🌹💐🎀👍🏾👏🏾🙌🏾
Rem Harris I love her so much.
I feel exactly the same way. Music for the soul
+Rem Harris Then why didn't you go to a predominately black college if it bothers you?
***** Prolly had to settle for what he could get into honestly.
Sadly, some won't even get the message. I used to love this song, and still do. #MissBadu
