I think there is nice little twist in Ismo´s English comedy. There is like an "outsider" point of view about American coulture and English language. And of course seeing how people react to this poin of view makes it even more interesting. Finnish comedy is good too but I kind of like these better.

I think myself, as a Swede, that it is sometimes easier to play with words in English than in Swedish. Playing with words in Finnish is like declaring sodomy legal

It used to be beer commercials. Then there was an organization that lobbied really hard to stop the beer commercials. It just so happened that they were the Pharmaceutical companies.

As a Finnish person, I wouldn't necessarily say that Ismo is better when he's performing in Finnish than when he's performing in English. He's incredibly funny, no matter what language he uses. When he's performing in Finnish, he plays with the Finnish words in a way, which cannot be translated to English. But the opposite is also often true; he sometimes plays with English words, and those jokes wouldn't make any sense if they were translated to Finnish. He often jokes about how English is his second language ( which is true; all Finnish people study English at school, starting at the age of 7, from elementary school, all the way thru the high school, college and even university ). So he understands English language perfectly well - that's why he can play with words - but his accent is funny, because speaking is a totally different cognitive process. And in Finland we do not speak English every day - usually. We speak Finnish instead. As Ismo says, it's very popular in Finland. So we do not get much practice, and that's why we don't often sound like native English speakers - and yet, we understand it perfectly well - well, not all of us obviously, but quite a large percentage of Finnish people is either fluent or at least good enough in English. Especially 95% of the younger generation of Finns (30 years old or younger) can understand English fluently or very close to fluent. Rest of them (5%) are just slackers, who haven't learned anything useful so far anyway - and probably never will.

I totally agree. And as a Finn on my fourties, I read and write English daily as part of my work and my hobbies but I very rarely need to speak it. As a result, my written English is very good but my spoken English sounds funny. And trying to learn proper pronounciation without heavy accent as an adult is really really hard.

If you look at the map, you'll find that Finland is equally close to North Pole as Alaska. Finland is a bit warmer in reality thanks to water currents over Atlantic but not that much after all.

Finnish word for ass (Perse) has two syllables, "Per" and "se". Those are pronounced "Per" as in "Peroxide" (like Hydrogen Peroxide) and "se" as in "Sentence". That's the closest I can come up with, and it's still not quite exactly how it's pronounced. That's because we roll our r's (no pun intended) :)

Yup, Ismo's Finnish material is a lot better and quite a bit rounchier. He was already by far Finland's most popular stand up comedian before he moved to England and started doing stand up in English
