- Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction! This movie definitely had an impact on me, didn't talk nearly as much as most movie reactions, but Sweeney Todd was really disturbing to me haha.

So the knives Sweeney Todd uses are called straight-edge razors and they were very popular 50 plus years ago, however they are extremely dangerous to use without proper training, I’m sure you noticed that while watching.

Lovett actually wasn't, she thought it was revolting. Lol. Ironic

My favorite scene was Nick's face at the sudden realization when he understood what Mrs. Lovett wanted to do with the Italian Barber's body.
@@MsPandacakes I thought she was just lying by saying Mrs. Mooney used cats when she really meant she used cats like when people say "i have a fried who has this problem..." when they're just talking about themselves. It would explain why her meat tastes so bad, why she knows cats are fast, and why it was so easy for her to suggest using human meat. It'd already be down her lane to suggest stranger meat options if she were already using strange meat.
@@KartalaBreednah, she was jealous that Mrs Mooney was doing it and getting customers, the line about the cat being quick implies she tried to do it too so she'd get more customers, but couldn't catch one so she pretended she was against it.

I hope you know Nick that the man who wrote this musical is the late Stephen Sondheim. He passed away recently and at 91, left an impact on how musical theatre is sung. So yes it’s scary but his music is an absolute genius 💚
One of my faves. His musicals are brilliant and he wasn’t afraid to tackle the heavier side of life with his music.
Now of course as well as 'Into the Woods' Nick is going to have to watch both versions of 'West Side Story' which Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics for - that was his first big job and even though the composer for the show's music Leonard Bernstein had contributed to some of the lyrics he let Stephen take the credit for all the lyrics. He said somewhere once the he stood back and learned from a professional, from a master, and he wrote better music as a result.
I wanted Sondheim to get credit actually I wrote it but who doesn't love Stephen? I was honored he loved it and took credit
I love the way the music clashes almost with the singers like the end of pretty women and god that's good
R.I.P. Stephen Sondheim. This is probably one of his best musicals. Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman do incredible performances in this!
Johanna (and the reprises) are some of my favourite songs from musicals.
I also love Into the Woods. I'm pretty sure that's one of Sondheim's.

"What is with the abuse of children in this movie?"
Is not the movie it-self, the movie is actually pretty accurate. In that historical period of time, especially in the poor class of the population, children were treated like adults, they were considered mini adults and they were expected to understand and behave as such. The mentality was different. And as for the beatings, even today there are parents who think that beating their children makes them grow up well, abusing children has always been normal behavior in families, beating a child is easier than talking to him and explaining to him what is right and what is not. Talking to him requires patience and empathy and not a lot of people have these skills.

@@LadyFeline3 Yes, but it's not apparent to everyone. It's very much not apparent to everyone, because it's satire based on a culture that absolutely devalued the lives of children, an Irish children in particular. I remember my English teacher handing it out at the end of the year as a lark. I had already read it, and apparently I was the only one because the two of us kind of just watched everyone else's reactions and the absolute horror on their faces as they realized what was happening. It took most of the read for AP English students to get it.

Anyway, I agree with you. Abusing people, no matter their age, is just unacceptable.
Hope you doing okay Nick, most people are somewhat familiar with the story, but watching this knowing nothing is heartbreaking to say the least. Glad to see you seem to be enjoying it though!

That dance party scene with Judge Turpin and the rest just watching him while he does "That" to his wife was so disturbing, really great film especially when told from a musical.
“Poor Thing” is an incredibly difficult song for an audience to absorb, and even more so to perform. When we did the show a few years ago, the directors were very sensitive and gave the ensemble the option to opt out of this number if they needed to. They were all keen to participate. For my part (I was Sweeney), I was having a hard time hitting the emotional pitch until I realized what my problem was: they weren’t laughing. Finally I told them: “I need you to really laugh here. The more cruelly you laugh, the more it hurts.” And so they did: sickening and depraved laughter. I cried real tears in this scene, night after night.
I'm just halfway in and just realized this movie is way too graphic and dark for nicks gentle innocent soul...the darkness and the graphic are actually the things that i like about this movie...don't know what that says about me though...😬😅😂
No seriously, I couldn’t really watch it to the end, not because I didn’t like Nicks reaction but I just didn’t wanna see him get more disturbed lol. I weirdly don’t really pay attention to the gore, I’ve probably only sat and watched it all the way through twice in my life, I just think the music is so gorgeous.

The thing is - dark, graphic, twisted, & gory things have been going on throughout history, both in the daylight, & in the shadows....
I had somewhat of an appreciation for this already for the tragedy & the music. It also shows what can happen when you are on a path of revenge with tunnel vision. He apparently considered his daughter already dead or out of reach, & therefore paid no attention to her plight, & almost killed her, & definitely killed his own wife, before realizing who she was. But back to what I was saying, is after watching an interview with Johny Depp & Tim Burton, when questioned about all the blood & gore, Tim's response was, "Well, the blood is sort of it's own character." And adding to that, as such, it deserves a voice, representation, & to be recognized in volume, when it is spilled in volume. Or put another way - from the Bible, when Cain killed his brother Able apparently out of jealousy, God said,"Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground." Blood spilled through violence speaks, & demands justice. So although I don't necessarily like the shocking murder & gore element, Tim's words gave me a better appreciation for it's representation here. Hope that all makes sense....🤷♀️
Going into Sweeney Todd completely blind, your reaction is quite valid, don't worry. As for me, I adore this musical because of the fact it stands out for being morbid, dark and disturbing yet still successful as a musical. (Plus I was raised on horror movies, so blood and gore is like tea and sugar for me) It was and still is a dream of mine to see this on Broadway. (Along with many other musicals)
If you can get past the disturbing undertones, the lyrics for this musical (the majority of the songs are symbolic and heavy with metaphors) are actually all very clever and well written.
I’m not usually a big fan of horror movies but I adore this movie and it is an underrated masterpiece ❤️🔪⚰️
After watching you react to this film, I have forgotten just how dark this is to people that don't routinely watch it like me. We don't have a lot of scary or dark musicals which happens to two of my favourite things. But Loved the reaction Nick, despite how disgusting and disturbing it can be - you still managed to enjoy it! So we horror musical fans appreciate it I'm sure haha

@@marezesim8119 That was actually the first time I saw Hasselhoff in any media. Years later I heard about a thing called Baywatch and asked my mom "Oh the actor from the musical Jekyll and Hyde?" and she about lost it that I knew him from that

When I saw the thumbnail and look at Nick’s reaction I was like “oh no” 😂 when I heard nick saying that he’ll be reacting to Sweeney Todd I was like “oh no” lol I hope you enjoyed it, its quite a bloody movie
This could be argued but, In a way, Sweeney Todd, in my eyes is a tragic anti-hero, I wouldn’t call him a full on villain necessarily, because even though he set his eyes on revenge to the judge for what he’s done to him and his family but, he also kills child abusers, and men without family, he doesn’t kill men with a family because he knows and experiences what it’s like to have a family and then them being taken away in which him returning to London to find out what happened to his family took a heavy turn on him (even though miss Lovett lied about his wife in the first place until at the end of the film).
She never lied actually; She _never_ said Lucy was dead. She said she poisoned herself with arsenic but left out that it didn't kill her, it just broke her mind a little and disfigured her some.

Sweeney Todd starts out as a tragic anti-hero, however he goes full psychopathic villain after Turpin gets away from his first assassination attempt, doesn't matter weather they had families or not, killing enough people to make a literal business out of the human flesh, and then feeding it to the public is monstrous behavior.
@@hellsgate09 She did later on when talking about Lucy "Life is for the alive" implying that she is dead. Todd refers back to it in the final scene as well.

Same. I have a morbid sense of humor so my friend and I were laughing and clapping watching this in the theater so seeing poor Nick get so freaked out just amused me.
fun fact...Johnny depp actually used to have a music band that's why his singing is pretty good and my favorite songs are my friends , joanna and adolfo pirelli (Italian barber)song and my favourite scene is when sweeney holds the shaving blade and says"at last...my arm is complete again"...if i can describe this movie in one word that would be "masterpiece"
Another fun fact; Helena also practically begged Tim Burton for the role as Ms. Lovett because she was such a big fan of the play, and already knew all the songs by heart.
This movie is a perfect example of musical foreshadowing and story telling, and has really great use of the Dies Irae.
The score is just 🤌 *chefs kiss
I love when the mad woman’s song pops up as the ballroom music when Lucy gets raped. I mean not the rape part, but the foreshadowing Sondheim does there is brilliant.

If you ever get an opportunity, I would recommend seeing this on stage. The film is a fine introduction to the musical, but it lacks a lot of the energy it really needs.
Plus it cuts out the points where the ensemble narrates parts of the action; the music that plays over the title sequence is supposed to be a song that set the scene, and the melody recurs a lot throughout.
'A Little Priest' (the song where they first come up with the idea of making pies from people) is a good example of what I mean. On stage it's supposed to be boisterous and loud, with them having so much fun enjoying coming up with the jokes that you get swept up in it with them. The point is to make you have as much fun watching as they are singing, but every now and then remember what they're singing about and feel uncomfortable. The film version is a bit flat so you don't get the same sense of fun.
(I say all this having been in a production of the show once)

I would argue this is a way different feel than the stage...it's more....serious...and not really as campy or overexaggerated as in the stage production (little priest comes to mind...George Hearn really emphasizes the puns there)

@@blackfeather3959 me too funnily enough, it was weirdly comforting for me in a time where I was very in my shell. I could never watch the really gorey parts but the soundtrack was on constant rotation. Sondheim had an incredible talent for music that I admire so much.

With how you were reacting the whole time, I can't actually believe you watched this all the way!! I was actually worried about you watching this when you announced it because almost every reaction at this point has been to something with a happy ending and not-so-dark scenes. This was definitely a turn to the darker side of media (from book to stage to television to film).
I'm still hoping that the surprise movie is going to be Arthur Christmas by Aardman Animation; you need a happy and joyful holiday picker-upper after this one.

This is definitely my favorite musical. It puts me under a spell every time I watch it. The score, the visuals, the story, all the performances, and the songs and can't seem to get out of your head, make this something special. I just can't gush about this movie enough.
Also, it's funny, it's like Burton said "okay this takes place in London, get me as many Harry Potter actors as possible."😂
It was pretty fun to see a totally blind viewing of Sweeney Todd. I’m not surprised you hated Pirelli so much, since he’s definitely a good hate-sink/first kill. But yeah, Todd was a prisoner. Basically, the Judge had him imprisoned under false pretenses (since Todd was found in the ocean, he was probably trying to escape from a penal colony in Australia where he’d been trapped for 15 years).
Sweeney Todd’s a very dark story, so good on you for soldiering through. I kind of wish they had trimmed less of the Johanna stuff from the stage musical and kept in the chorus singing, especially for the song God That’s Good. I’d definitely recommend watching a recording of the stage musical someday, if you feel up to it. Less visceral gore, but still as dark. Fun Fact: The original Mrs. Lovett was played by Angela Lansbury (she also voiced Mrs. Potts in the Disney animated Beauty and the Beast and played as Jessica Fletcher in the TV show Murder, She Wrote).

Your reaction to Helena and Alan was adorable! There's a clip of Snape singing to Grindewald who's now married to Bellatrix and it's just a clip from this movie!
When this came out in theatres, I didn't know much about it myself. I had been to a hospital earlier that day where they had a small place/deli where I ordered a meat pie for lunch. I wasn't able to finish the whole thing at once, so I stored half of it for later. Then we went to the theater. I took one look at that after coming home and to this day, I can't eat or even look at a meat pie without getting incredibly nauseated. The hilarious thing is that I honestly don't think it would have impacted me that much if I hadn't happened to have eaten that for lunch earlier and then made to look at it again in the fridge for dinner right after seeing this movie. My threshold for disturbing, morbid, etc. is pretty high but the universe gave me the middle-finger and said, 'No, you are never eating this again.'
I was shocked honestly to see you watch this, I was like oh no our sweet Nick is too pure for this movie lol

I love this movie so much. Yes, it’s absolutely messed up, twisted, dark, and heartbreaking. But it’s also interesting because this movie has you on the side of a man that, in any other movie, would be the bad guy. Not many movies can pull that off well. When Toby went to kill Todd, you can see Todd lean his head back just a bit, showing that he knew he was going to be killed- and he was okay with that. It was incredibly heartbreaking when he died, holding his dead wife.
I just really wanted to say that I appreciate your reaction. I personally enjoy this musical. Still, I know it's not for everyone. If a movie ever gets too much, please don't feel bad for stopping. I much rather you take care of your mental health. Keep up the great work!
My face lit up when I got the notification! I currently have COVID, so seeing this is a treat. I will say that the stage version is more upbeat and humorous than the movie version bc Sondheim created it to be a comedy thriller, so if you have a chance, find the stage version

In “by the sea” the scene on the beach: the story takes place in the Victorian era, so he’s wearing a Victorian era bathing suit. They were very covered, prudish , and “proper” in the era

I'm pretty surprised you decided to watch this one. Also, Godspeed, Mr. Sondheim, you've created some of the best musicals I've ever seen (In which I think Sweeney is my absolute favorite). While Rodgers and Hammerstein may invented the musical as we know it, you were the one who helped reinvent it
Sweeney Todd is my favorite movie! It met all of my requirements, it had the love of my life (Johnny Depp), it was both a horror and musical, and had a great plot twist. And I am very happy you reacted to it Nick😁
"A Little Priest" is actually my favorite song in this because of the humor used in it 😅🤣
There are rumours this was based on a true story, really it’s a legend that we can’t confirm or deny since it was so long ago, but the rumours were of a Mrs. Lovett cooking people into pies, who was discovered by the law, due to the smell and someone finding a finger in a pie, and was sentenced to death. Interesting stuff 😷
Workhouses here in London were truly horrific. Also children having gin was not uncommon when they were from or in workhouses.
If you want to continue with the musicals of Sondheim Into The Woods, Company, Sunday in the park with George and west side story are all good choices.
Not from Sondheim but the new musical Tick, tick…Boom! On Netflix is really good.

I love this movie! I hadn't realized how truly dark it was until watching you react. I hope youre doing okay now 💓 There's actually a lot of interesting history about old London in the movie. I remember reading about how children used to suffer from terrible alcoholism, so the young boy's Gin drinking is sadly quite historically accurate.
Finally glad you're watching this one. This is one of my absolute favorites

My school did this play three years ago, hangs down our best production ever, we had a sick set and the actors were amazing. It could’ve totally been professional. Excited to see your reaction!

For someone unknowing of what is coming, hope you're ok. I knew the stage show first so it wasn't as shocking but its a lot to take in at once.

@@nickflix8657 I may or may not be in the minority for this, but you seemed quite upset to the point where i wanted to stop you from watching more. I know it's antithetical to the whole 'movie reaction' thing where shocked responses are valued, but it's reasonable to not want to watch media with certain subjects if they can be too triggering, and i wouldn't want you or anyone else to experience something that is that emotionally upsetting for the sake of your viewers. I do commend you for getting through it, as i know you had many points where you wanted to stop, but just know that i don't think many of us would want you to have to do that. If it's a matter of keeping yourself in the dark about the plot as much as possible, you can always let the community know like 'hey, i can't do child abuse,' or 'i can handle some violence, but not excessive torture violence,' and so on whenever it comes to movie recommendations or even for movies you think you're interested in checking out. You can always run it by and ask if there's A or B or if there's anything that would affect you too much that you need to be made aware of. That way, people could let you know ahead of time if you would or wouldn't be alright with a certain movie or to, at the very least, emotionally prepare you, so that it isn't so harrowing of an experience.
Of course, it's your call at the end of the day. It just emotionally pained me to see how much it was upsetting you and you're such a kind and sincere person, so the shock value isn't worth it (to me at least.)
oh Nick. I just want to give you a big hug right now lol I'm glad you enjoyed it but I'm sorry that you were left so disturbed by this one. it's truly a great musical but I get that it can be harrowing if you're not expecting the tone and themes. thanks for subjecting yourself to this one for us ❤
Human meat actually has been reported to taste like pork, so, no they wouldn't notice.
The one thing I love about this movie is mrs Lovett's relationship with toby, she really did loved him like he was a son to her. And she protected toby from sweeney todd. And it is very sad that toby lost her in the end, I mean after he tried to warn her about sweeney todd. And when she locked him in the basement, they never saw each other again after that which is very sad and heartbreaking.
When I saw you reacted to this movie, I had a feeling how it would go...and I was correct. You may not have said as much as others, but trust me, you're facial expressions told plenty about how you felt XD I do love the "A Little Priest" song, though, because I watched this movie in college with a friend and her reaction when she realized what they were singing about was priceless. Sweeney Todd started as a character from a book in 1840s. It became popular some years later, becoming a melodrama and legend. In 1888, Jack the Ripper began killing. What I find 'facinating' (cant think of another word to use so sorry) is that there are similarities between Sweeney Todds modus operandi and Jacks. Sweeney was popular at that time, perhaps Jack took it as inspiration?

Fun fact: this was my favorite childhood movie, I had every line memorized by the time I was 12. I used to think it was so romantic the way he died with his wife at the end. My best friend and I actually met because we were the two kids in summer camp that were obsessed with it and we would sing the songs In class and everyone thought we were weird lmao
Oh my God.. this is literally me and my best friends same origin story!! We were so obsessed!! We waited so impatiently for the movie to come out, we bought the CD as soon as it was released and used to share (old school) iPod earbuds on our middle school bus. We had the entire screenplay memorized! So cool to hear someone had such a similar experience. We should get together sometime and have some.. pie 🥧 😉

Do Les Mis! Its similar, lots of singing, actually ONLY singing, no talking at all. Less graphic, but still sad. More happy bits though. And the MC is very moral. No cannibalism lol.

I wouldn't say no talking at all.. but they actually did cut a song in order to add a new one which was bearable, but hurt to see a beloved song cut.
Also, the movie version of Les Mis is unique because it's performed on set and not dubbed over with songs performed in studio. It was raw singing, which was the mood they were looking for.
This is the first rated R movie I ever really liked. I first saw this in the theater when I was 10. I never even blinked. But the second time I watched it I actually couldn’t look when things got violent

When you want to watch another musical you should really check out Les Miserabel. It is so so so great and the music score is just *chef kiss*
This is my favourite stage musical. I've been in four productions and have played Pirelli and the Beadle. I'm lukewarm about this film because all the ensemble was cut and the singing is subpar, but it's gloriously shot. Check out the stage version, particularly with George Hearn / Angela Lansbury. 💇♂

Yes, the whole ensemble which acts as a ‘Greek chorus’ sets the tone from the beginning of the stage performance. They tell the story before anything unfolds but oh the shock when it does. 😦🤢

I always love musical movies since my mom and me used to watched them together growing up a lot. I remembering seeing a version with Ben Kingsley as Todd. I loved both versions, but I remember Johanna finding out that Sweeney was her father in the other version and helps him escape, I think.
I'm not sure, if you have seen any of the movies based on Jane Austin's books, but I highly recommend, "Sense and Sensibility" (1995). It stars Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant.
I'm not a big fan of reaction channels but you're enjoyable to watch. I was so glad you knew nothing about this movie, it's so satisfying to watch people realized the twist. This movie, this play, this whole show is incredible messed up. There are no winners, there are no happy endings, it just sucks for everyone. Fun Fact, the story is a lot older than the musical itself. Sweeney Todd first showed up in a story called "A String of Pearls" published in the mid 1800's. The color grading was, in my opinion, perfectly done. Their rendition of 1785 London was wonderfully dark and greasy, matching the tone of the story to a T. The only time where there was any lively colors was in Mrs. Lovett's fantasy and it was just that: a fantasy.
I've seen people explain the ending but you showed a bit of confusion about why Sweeney was after the Judge. Benjamin Barker was a barber with a beautiful wife and baby daughter. The Judge Turpin had his eye on her, and to get at her he had Barker arrested (meaning he was sent to Australia, given the time period in which the story takes place). Many years later he makes his way back to London with a new name and a need for vengeance. I just adore this movie and I'm glad to see your genuine reaction to how fucked up it is.
I feel so bad for you like I’ve seen the musical live and stuff so none of this was shocking to me when I watched the movie. It’s very interesting seeing someone who never seen or heard anything about it.
I know I’m late to the this, but I enjoyed your Reaction! Truthfully, I understand your feelings towards this movie. It is shocking and a lot to take in and it is disturbing. Ironically it’s my favorite movie of all time. I’ve seen it at least ten times in eleven years. I find this to be a perfect movie, at least for me. I’m just glad it’s finally getting recognition.

I think what makes me love this movie is the dark, morbid humor of it. Like, watching these people sing about their heinous crimes, and making jokes/puns about murder and cannibalism, just hits the right spots in my little demented soul lol. Plus, this movie is super poetic from a storytelling perspective. By the end, you realize it plays out like a tragedy - there was really no other way it could have ended. Sweeney Todd signs his fate the moment he becomes Sweeney Todd and chooses the path of revenge. Mrs. Lovett’s downfall comes through her love for Sweeney, and in the end - they’re both killed by their instruments of crime (Sweeney by his razor, and Mrs. Lovett by her pie-making oven). It’s dark and VERY disturbing, but strangely beautiful and dementedly funny.
"A Little Priest" makes me cackle every time.
Great film. I watched it in the cinema with my housemates at Uni and only one other of them knew it was a musical. It was really funny.

I was so shocked to see this pop up in my subs especially since I know Nick is gentle-hearted and gets very engrossed in whatever film he watches. I'm personally a chicken when it comes to any kind of horror, but I think Sweeney Todd skirts past the really gruesome stuff and layers on the dark humor and great music enough to get me over the gore to where I can focus on the tragic story. This musical is so perfect for deep analysis. I think my favorite vid on it is Sideways's "How the Music Spoils Sweeny Todd (and why that's a good thing!)" in which Sideways talks about how the music adds layers to the visual storytelling. I really enjoyed this reaction, and I definitely felt for Nick throughout the harder-to-watch scenes.
Regarding children . . . Yeah, Victorian England wasn't a particularly kind place. Children weren't considered children. They were seen as just small adults. Hence, capable of working and making their own choices. And thus bearing the responsibility for them.
