    Never heard Haken before, that was fun, very eclectic and with so much different moods, all fitting together. Near the end the guitar sounded very Vai style (around 33' 20”), which I love. So yes, I agree : good idea to mix two songs on a video. The old ones can discover new music, and the younger get in the origins of the genre. Great

    Aquarius is a concept album and I am sure you will give the full album a listen even with the lyrics. After hearing the album, you will get a ton of reprisals and motifs in Celestial Elixir. Great song, but even better pertaining to the entire album. Thanks Sidecar.

      Actually . . . ALL their albums are Conceptual/Themed albums. Not many bands do that (Pain of Salvation, Ayreon, Seventh Wonder to name a few).

    Finally got some time where I could focus on this cool Marathon from Sidecar. I really enjoyed hearing that Gentle Giant song. I can’t say that I had heard it before but I really enjoyed the structure and melodic licks with a great bass part. I’ve heard HaKen on the channel, but theyare really growing on me. I really enjoyed both songs. It was nice to finally be able to sit and actually relax to hear them both and all the excellent musicianship. Really liked the idea that although the old days from the 70s were so pioneering it doesn’t mean that people have forgotten how to play new music and do it well. Plenty of space to like them both, great reaction Nick. 👍👍

    Thanks Nick and Sidecar once again. I'm the old geezer, but still kickin, who loves Gentle Giant. The 70's were my real prime time (grateful). One has to acquire the taste for Gentle Giant, in fact one of their LP's is called, "Acquiring the Taste". This is a British band, excepting the guitarist who is an American. I believe that they were all classically trained, as well as all being multi instrumentalists. They have many influences including English Renaissance music as well as early instruments. You are quite right Nick, they are apart from fusion and prog, they stand alone. Best album IMHO, "Free Hand". Thanks again Nick et al, keep doing what you are doing! You are, in a very real sense, keeping music that will never be taught, ALIVE into the future!

    I knew I would love the GG, but an fairly new to Haken, and I found it equally interesting and satisfying...and much for the same reasons as you mentioned, specifically the limiting of vocal aggressions, which can be the dealkiller for perhaps too many newer bands. At this point in the tape, we have been spared such issues. Fingers crossed. Loving the playful variety. Well done, SD!

    Thanks so much Nick. I was introduced to Gentle Giant via Columbia House record club (I forgot to mail Power and the Glory back:) As a Beatle Freak, I was so happy to hear something so different and so fun. Now I always include GG in the big 5 of seventies prog.
    Sorry Nick for the mess up, I didn't know there was an instrumental version. I don't know this whole album.
    What I love about most early Haken is their willingness to experiment with different styles of music and then incorporate into a modern sound. The music is just so damn Cinematic. A wonderful soundscape painted for my ears.
    Ps, Eli ,aka Sidecar dog, always comes over to lay beside me on the couch when I'm listening to some good symphonic prog.
    He gets a good keyboard and drum massage.

    Strange that you compare GG with Yes. For me they are completely opposite. Yes is epic songs, very much based on chords and emotions and powerful rock. Gentle Giant is much more complex, short songs, based on intricate melodies, very mathematic and more innovative. I like both but don't see how you can say one reminds you of the other. It's like saying Mozart makes you think of Stravinsky…

    • @NicknLex
      @NicknLex  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the other way around. Stravinsky makes me think of Mozart. Stravinsky admitted to having studied Mozart's operas closely as models and declared himself ''Mozart's continuer.'' You literally made my point.

    • @Rowenband
      @Rowenband ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NicknLex I get what you say but if my example was bad, it's not about Stravinsky having studied Mozart that makes my point. It's the big difference in approach of the music. Gentle Giant did not study Yes (and I suppose the other way around is true too 😀). But their approach of music is too different to compare one to the other.

    "Celestial Elixir" (as I just looked up the setlist) was the last track before the encore at _your_ show (and ours too), and I was VERY happy that they played a track from their debut! Woo Hoo! If you remember, possibly your audience was singing along at the end when Ross Jennings was singing (38:54) "WhooawhooaWHOOOAwhooa whoa whooaWHOOAohh" 🎵 like our audience, as he got the crowd to chime-in.
    Sorry we haven't been able to talk about the last 2 shows we've seen (Marty/QR). (From a previous comment about the Haken show) That is soo strange that you guys had a "Pit" going with people moshing to _Haken_ . . . wow! We here in LA didn't even get that! People were into the music, I don't think I've ever seen a Slam Pit at a Prog Metal show anywhere in LA. (Only Opeth & Nevermore come to mind).
    That sucks that poor Lexi was having back trouble 🙁. Also at our show, the double bass pedals were fine, unfortunately Ross Jennings's vocals were a bit buried in the mix, otherwise it was a great show. And surprisingly we very much enjoyed "Arch Echo", their drummer and keyboardist were especially awesome!
    The "Cover" art of _Aquarius_ gives you an idea of the album "Concept". And you get that playful "Turn of the Century, Seafarer & Ragtime" tropes much like the Jordan Rudess era of DT, with the former keyboardist of Haken; "Diego Tejeida", and the excellent Bass of former member "Thomas MacLean", who was also the _Guitarist_ for his side band *To-Mera,* (which you also have, to experience in the future). The newer Keyboardist "Richard Henshall" was also formerly with To-Mera.
    Don't even get me started on my favorite Gentle Giant album (which you have as well 😄 but need to get you the Wilson mixed version), every track is stellar, and got me ready for the odd, avant-garde and angular music to come.
    You also got to hear a bit of the GG influence on Haken (especially the point/counterpoint vocal harmonies that Ross also does on many tracks).
    - Thanks Sidecar for getting Nick & Lexi into these bands. Thank you for the "Shout Outs" Nick, I really appreciate it and take care of your Lexi😊. EnjOy the albums! 🎶 Rest in Peace Ray Shulman.
