Quick question. I need to replace the large pulley. The one you put the screw driver through. But I can not get the old one out. I have it loose, but I can't figure out how to maneuver it out. The bar is in the way. Will I have to take the fenders off to get it out?
Thanks so much for another great video. Not only are your videos very helpful and informative, but whenever I've been struggling with something and decide I should probably watch a video on it, I always come away telling myself: "So, this guy just did this with only one hand. What's your excuse? Get back to work." Great respect and admiration for you.
Regarding that ornery spring, I use a loop of #80 weedeater line that I run thru a handle that I made out of a small block of scrap wood. I drilled a hole in the handle & then tied a double knot on the line ends after inserting them thru said hole. The loop grabs the curved spring end. When I get the spring in place, I cut the line (which is now pinched) to remove it. Yes, I have to remake the line/loop next time I need to perform this task but that's not very often. Your hook is better but sometimes one has to improvise. Thanks for the very well filmed & communicated video!
Fantastic video and this comment was on point! I was about to go buy a tool and then found this comment (weedeater line and some scrap PVC worked great). Thank you both!!
Thanks for an excellent video; especially in getting the light exposure in an unlit space. I ordered a spring tool after watching this video. I own an older vintage Troy Bilt (2005) that has served me faithfully. Years ago I paid a local shop $150 to "replace all the belts". I have a very small mowing area and use the tractor for towing a small yard trailer; a year later I discovered that the belt for the blades had been the replaced BUT the drive belts were almost in pieces (multiple deep cracks); the "mechanic" had obviously given up in replacing that belt but still charged me for the entire job! Lesson: watch videos like this and DIY. BTW, at least on my mower, there is a frame bolt on the left rear of the mower which, when loosened allows the pulley on that side to be moved enough to slide a belt over it. Just FYI.
Thanks D! I’m glad it was helpful. Please give this video a like, subscribe and tell your friends to help my channel grow. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for watching:)
The 22MM Crow Foot fit so I bought the metric kit for around $27 more likely to use them in future. My nut came off easily so grinding an old wrench shorter and crow baring might have worked. I used an old bike cable and scrap piece of wood as handle to pulled spring worked nicely. Thank you very much for video it wasn't difficult and I am back on the road. I repair mowers myself all day long and the flashlight that I use is a Milwaukee it’s the greatest flashlight that I’ve ever seen it’s expensive but you’ll really love it. There’s never been a time that I couldn’t stick it and adjust it to right where I want it it cost like $200 without the battery but it’s a good one.
THANK YOU!!! this video was extremely helpful! I borrowed a crows foot wrench from a neighbor (he didnt have 7/8 but the 22mm worked!) I also didnt use a hook tool. I used an old dog tie-out cable and looped around the spring hook and pulled the spring through the hole.
I'm working a lower drive belt on the Bronco, that seems to be stuck in drive and reverse. I had to replace the jam nut that was missing. The only way to stop the tractor is to turn the ignition off. I know the part # is 954-0467, but that belt seems to be too tight and will not become loose and fear that is the issue. The other # is 954-0467A. I hope that one is at least 90.8 inches. I had hoped that you were going to do both belts to see the routing. There are no schematics under under the frame as other tractors have. As for the spring though, I use a long electrical wire to loop around.
Man I just put a lower drive belt on my bronco and when in drive the brakes aren’t stopping it, I’m hoping it will stretch enough after riding it around for a bit so I can get the damn thing to stop but i dunno
Thank you for this very instructional video. Looks like a quick trip to the auto-parts store for that crow's foot is in order. Anything to save headaches. Hello can you help me I got a bronco 42 inch if I lift it on Jack stands n place on reverse tires turn ,but when I place them on the ground tires don't turn ?
Can’t diagnose correctly without seeing the machine. I can say if the belts are all on as they should be, sometimes it is hard to change from the forward gear to the reverse gear, and you have to lift the clutch pedal a little bit and play with the shift knob to get it to rock into the reverse, or into the forward position. Other than that it could be bad transmission? Broken belt? Again without seeing it it’s almost impossible to diagnose.
Got a craftsman lt1500 basically a mtd 42 inch . Just replaced the upper transmission belt and now it won't go fast at all. Its like speed 2 and the clutch doesn't seem to go all the way back now. Any suggestions? I've been all up on the pulleys and don't see any remnants from the old belt that shredded off. I'm lost at this point. Thanks in advance!
If you installed a aftermarket belt? That is your issue. If you Installed a OEM belt, you either have a bad variator or you may need to replace the other belt to make it work correctly.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines thank you for the reply! I figured out that the belt had been worn for so long that the medium sized pulley was tensioned for so long in a the out position that it had made a catch which didn't allow a normal full sized belt retract all the way. So I basically just needed to lubricate the pulley arm and everything started working fine lol.
i have a troy-built bronco, i had to swap out both upper and lower last year because it just stopped moving. it ran better but i still had to push the gas almost all the way to the floor before it will move and the longer belt feels as loose as the original one i took off. i really want to get this back to par. any ideas?
You must use OEM belts (original equipment manufacturer) or that can happen. I learned that the hard way. If you did use OEM belts then I would suggest making sure the variable drive pulley is not stuck.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines i went back to troy built to confirm i did buy their oem belts NOT the mtd belts. when you say stuck, meaning its not spinning? also, is there anything related to the accelerator that might be the cause? edit: when i do depress the accelerator almost to the metal to does get going.

I have learned that you need to use OEM (original equipment manufacturer) belts or what is happening with your machine may happen. Use MTD brand belts. If you are using MTD belts I don’t know what could be going on as it is almost impossible to diagnose something like that without seeing the machine.
@Johnson's Small Engines thanks for the quick response. I did notice that the belt i got was alot thicker than the oem one. Ill try an original and see what happens
That would make sense if your new belt was thicker. The pedal would not go all the way because the belt being thicker has shortened it. I’m pretty confident getting the correct belt will be the key. Let me know how you make out.

Check your mounting from the transmission to the frame. I have come across broken mounts from where the transmission bolts to the frame. Try putting the tractor into a gear forward or reverse (engine not running) then rock the tractor back and forth to see if the transmission is moving up and down (if you can, take battery out and look to see if the transmission pulley is moving) if the transmission pulley is going up and down when rocking the tractor back and forth, you may have loose mounting bolts or broken mounting flange from the frame.
That sounds like a warranty issue. Maybe something was installed incorrectly at the factory. I have not come across issues on the new machines, just machines with a lot of hours on them.

Wow excellent video! Just found your channel. I just got a troy bilt tractor off Facebook for 200 bucks. It was garage kept, engine surged etc...I hope i wasn't ripped off. The tractor won't start now. I charged the battery, it turns over but won't stay running. The guy I bought it from had it running when I picked it up. I could hear it surging while it was running. It looks like an older troy bilt. I checked the filters all new, spark plugs new, the guy I bought it from said I might have to spray some fluid to get it running..any help would be appreciated. Great channel and will donate 👍
Make sure you have a full tank of gas. When you say “it turns over but it won’t stay running”. If it starts then dies quickly after starting? (1) Try putting the choke 3/4 on to see if it gets better. If it does you may have a carburetor issue. (2) you also may have poor compression and you will need to check the compression with a compression tester. I would really to see it to diagnose correctly.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines This is a new tractor! Only mowed with 2 x. Ok Thanks 👍👍
That sounds like a warranty issue. Maybe something was installed incorrectly at the factory. I have not come across issues on the new machines, just machines with a lot of hours on them.
Thank you so much you were very helpful.

You've GOTTA be a Maryland or Pennsylvania native! Am I close?
Pa. How did you come to that conclusion?
My mom is from Western MD; you sound like “my people.” 😎

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines mine was the same way. Put a new carburetor on it, easy job, runs great now. About $20 on Amazon
Thank you!! This is the best!
