I spent far too many years desperately trying to keep branches that would never work on a bonsai. It took me along time before I got to the stage i am now - cut it all off :)
I‘m having a a big smile on my face. Enjoying this episode of Xavier, down at the bottom of his garden. You‘re actually part of my „bring value to my days off“-strategy 😘🤗 God bless. 🙋♀️
You make me blush Martina. I really enojyed doing this episode beecause it sums up the biggest issue I faced learning bonsai. You have to start from the trunk and then build that tree. I still have loads where i have not done that and it is a never ending game of trying to 'work backwards'. Thanks for all of your brilliant support. God bless and Happy Easter. Xav
Nice tree that. You're going to have a cracking twin-trunk bonsai in the future! I need to start working on some of my kojo no mais in the coming days I think.
Thanks Tony - even I was surprised by the base I found. i certainly didnt see it when I first picked it up 2 years ago. I look forward to seeing your work on them :)
Thank you so much for the shout out. i actually like that training pot and its a nice tree! great result too. i was considering leaving one of mine in a nursery pot ... I guess i have to pot it up now.
I learnt a few years ago that anything left in a nursery plant pot for more than a few years tends to lead to signifcant root issues. I have been working through all of my 'forgotten' nursery trees.
I hope that my content suits you but beware I have an unusual sense of humour sometimes. Tony was a star and we had great fun doing our collaboration a few months ago.
They are one of the few trees that just keep on giving...thoguh they start to look a bit ratty once the flowers drop and the sun starts to crisp off all the green growth!
I think the hardest thing to recognise is you get one opportunity to do that sort off work. I would rather take the chance and lose one or two along the way than face the extra work trying to do it later on.
Hi Xav it has been a lovely sunny day here with it ending watching your video on this cherry before bed, shan’t sleep after watching the horror of you torturing the tree haha at least it is in a bonsai pot, let’s hope it flourishes for you along with some cuttings, pot you are using I have the same one nice pot. All the best Xav.
Cheers - I always find with Fuji you need to get the basic structure sorted quickly. All of mine have done well. Thanks for watching and keep up the good work yourself :)
That twin trunk has some good root base and you've done your branch selection so it's ready to develop. I think this will be a very nice bonsai in a couple of years. I bought a Fuji Cherry a couple of days ago and thought it had a quite good root base till I came home and dug a bit deeper, it was a straight angle ! So now I've made it into a semi-cascade that might become a true cascade over the next couple of years.
That is the unfortunate risk with buying stuff. Sometimes the dice don't come out in your favour. You'll hav eto send me a picture when you've done it :)
I think the cherry will work out fine with that amount of work. The cuttings I just take rather than toss them away - if some work then its a bonus. You are always welcome Jack.
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat all my outdoor bonsai is coming out of dormancy right now. I’m in Sweden so I’m a few weeks behind England. But my cherry tree is now in full bloom, love it! 🌸

It is the same stuff probably - I have heard it is really difficult to find at the moment. I grabbed 5 bags back in February to at least get me through this year. I'd love to see what you've done with your cherry then :)
Your cheesiness is part of your charm, Xavier. I've been enjoying watching these.

Love a Fuji cherry for bonsai, they make great material to work on. And thus time of year they really put on a show. 👍
Bit like me :)

Another excellent , instructional session. I bought three new plants and will get at applying the instruction from this lesson. Thanks again.
Cheers Sharon. I can't wait to see what you achieve...
Congratulations on that tree, Xavier. I had some awsome repottings myself this season. Such a grounding hobby these little trees are. 😄😘🙋♀️

Great video here Xavier. I am still a bit shocked by how much root you removed. The pot you picked though is beautiful.

I am really happy at seeing what that base was like and the twin trunk will be pretty good. Nice find :)
I love all the blossom coming out at the moment, definitely inspiring me to get a couple.

Just watched Tony's video with his Fuji. I've seen a nice looking one in Morrisons this weekend so i might just pop down and pick one up :)
Sounds like a plan to me. Obviously our appraoches are a little different - he was a lot more conservative on his root removals :)

Cheers Tom - It is always more challenging workng on a tree that ISNT a Larch :)
Looks like I need to pay you a visit soon 👍. £9.50 is on the floor after your pruning, looks good though. Hope the cutting root ok.

The closest I have is Hawthorne. I tried to get Blackthorne hardwood cuttings but they all failed back in 2016.
