Finally watched Your Name and loved it. Right medium, right story, for the right audience. I also love it when anime shows real places in Japan. (There were times I wanted to shout "hey I know that place!")
I’ve watched this film three times now and each time I have been floored by not only how beautiful it looks but also by how beautiful it’s themes are. It’s an incredible achievement to make a film about a love story that transcends both time and space without it feeling pretentious or overly sentimental. I adore this film.
This is retrospectively my favourite film of 2016. It's absolutely wonderful. It's like somebody took Whisper of the Heart, Freaky Friday, and Donnie Darko, smashed them together, and somehow produced something totally brilliant.
Heard a little mispronunciation, the heroine's name is Mitsuha, not Matsuha. If you translate it, the meaning goes from "three leaves" to "pine leaves". That made a big difference, considering the naming tradition of the character's family: grandma- one leaf mother- two leaves sister- four leaves
Oh man, what a movie, so powerful I had a little cry - loved it !! - wish I didn't have to drive so far to watch it thou, local cinemas need to sort themselves out
It's a masterpiece. Best film of the year HANDS DOWN. EDIT: It's actually my #3 film of 2016 now. I didn't think anything would top it until I saw La La Land. Then I saw Silence and I've come to the realization that it's #3. Phenomenal year for film.
I hear other people share that sentiment, and it makes me excited to see if I like it better than 5 Centimetres per second (which is my favorite by him so far).
I hope I'm not giving too much away, but do you remember the ending scenes of 5 Centimetres Per Second? There was a similar vibe towards the ending of Your Name and I was worried it was going to end that way since it felt wrong for this movie, but luckily it ends on a very positive note. You'll enjoy it! I'd also recommend watching 'A Silent Voice' that recently came as well. It's definitely as good, or even better, than Your Name.
I agree with that statement. The type of ending that 5 cm per second had, could only ever work for that movie. I'm glad that he chose a different route for Kimi no na wa and it felt perfect for that movie. I also just adore the ending credits song: Nandemonayia. It's my favorite song in the movie and I still listen to it almost everyday.
Couldn't agree with Mark more. Been a huge fan of Shinkai's previous work for a long time and having the chance to see Your Name in the cinema was amazing.
the twist in this movie is legitimately one of the best twists I've ever seen in all of cinema. it's absolutely devastating and makes perfect sense in the context of the film.
Believe the hype. Very good movie. Can't remember the last time a movie wow'd me with its ingenuity. Full of ideas, perfectly executed, incredible animation, well paced, touching, funny, sweet (maybe a little too much at times but it is anime). If you were an ugly duckling of a movie, this movie would make you sick with jealousy because it's so good and perfect at everything.
I love this movie... I love it so much that I hope it gets remade into a Bollywood movie with songs and dances and melodrama and colour and brightness, with maybe a reincarnation angle ... And I will probably love the remake just as much...
I liked 5cm per second and Children who chase lost voices, so I hope this one will deliver. A lot of sci-fi/fantasy anime tend to get buried in their imaginary aspects, so I hope this actually tells a dramatic story.
Enjoyed the movie, didn’t find it sad unfortunately ( which is why I wanted to watch it because I was told it was a really sad story) animation was great but did not find it as impactful or emotional as a movie like let’s say ‘A Silent Voice’ for example. Your name was not terrible but nothing groundbreaking or something I would highly recommend IMO
That's a bold claim. I could argue that at the very least 5 cm per second and Garden of Words were great movies. I also love The Place Promised in our early days, though it has it's flaws.

That Japanese Man Yuta hey I’m subscribed to your channel!! Love you!
I love mark for his open mind, you know he gives everything a fair chance
Mark describes Your Name incredibly. I could have never said it better myself. He described the abstract feeling evoked by this movie superbly.
This is why better critics are worth while.
You mean Mark Kermode isn’t one of the better critics?
Damn he really sold it, I need to see this now!
Have fun crying or eyes at the ending.
Hahah well, I love when movies make me sob ;) Rindou Yukihira Nee
@@aikighost Nope. And I'm apparently literally the only person in the world who didn't haha

Wow, didn't expect Mark to be such a fan of it! I've got tickets to see it on Thursday and I'm looking forward to it more now!
I have never seen such a generous Mark. I guess I'll have to watch the movie now.
It's an absolutely brilliant film. Made me cry more than once.
I just seen it. I sat at the back row and saw ordinance were all emotional during movie!!
Saw it and LOVED it
Haven't LOVED a movie in a while
I saw the English dub of this today. I've seen lots of anime, but this was the first one I've seen on the big screen. Absolutely brilliant film.
Makoto Shinkai is one of the most talented anime directors of this day. I've enjoyed everything he's done so far.
There are few things more wonderful than Kermode loving a movie that I love and him talking about it.

Mark is my waifu.
This is one of the best movies I watched in my life

no doubt no doubt. i agree
I'm just about to watch this on Amazon Prime....had to see what Mark had to say about it first. Ok, I'm going in....
5 cm/s tore my being asunder. i've watched all of makoto shinkai's films and i'm very much looking forward to this
This is the best film that Makoto Shinkai has made in my opinion.

Oh man he used the words 'epic' and 'legendary' what a great reviewer.

Your Name is up there with the best of Japanese animation. Succeeds on all fronts. Including the beautiful soundtrack. Made me cry.
I saw it last night at Showcase Cinema. Phenomenal film! One of my top 5 favourite Anime films now.
Really want to see this!
You must. I just seen it. He said was absolute right and the movie was beyond expectation!
Kermode is not wrong here; It's one hell of a spectacle.
The beauty of this movie will never leave me. The animation is SUPERB
Excited to see this one
Mark Otakumode
This is the best movie review in history. I mean that sincerely
Best film of the year IMO.
the twist in this movie is legitimately one of the best twists I've ever seen in all of cinema. it's absolutely devastating and makes perfect sense in the context of the film.
I thought it looked rather generic, but I trust Marks opinions enough that I'm planning on going to see it.
it has its generic elements and feels like an overachiever, but overall it's a great film and definitely Makoto Shinkai's crowning achievement
Oh trust me, it's not generic
So I finally got around to watching this film last night. Amazing, completely destroyed my expectations.
if you watched the official trailers, i could understand it seeming generic, glad you saw how good it was.

I love this movie and Weathering with You

Dam, Taki and "Matsuha" are my favorite characters XD
Plymouth VUE! 1 showing. Thursday 24th @ 7:30ish THAT'S IT!!! Catch this while you can. I'll be checking iwttr, see you there.
You know a movie is soo good if it made a high profile critic use meme words like Epic and Legendary.
best review on here
This man is a national treasure

Any idea of a North American release date?
***** I did, and nothing's confirmed :(
2nd December
isabella grandi Thanks for responding, but it looks like it's only for Los Angelas
ooh i don't know how it works cause i live in italy :) but you can see it online . i wachted it online but i'm going to see it again in january.
I think there's talk about Funimation giving it a wider release in 2017, but no details I can quote offhand.
べた褒めですね。
just saw the Oscar nominations. please tell me this is a shoo-in for the Kermode.
i loved 5 Centimeters per Second but was concerned abut a stereotypical body swap anime. Glad to hear it delivers and i got to see this
Lrnec Buma, check ' the garden of words' Same team, cracking cgi (lowercase intentional)/hand drawn mixture
after 'love' and 'almost anything', mark reviews ...'your name' :o
Gesticulations of a radio guy.
Taki
At least Makoto Shinkai finally made something good
That's a bold claim. I could argue that at the very least 5 cm per second and Garden of Words were great movies. I also love The Place Promised in our early days, though it has it's flaws.
Didn't know that Mark reviews anime
He's reviewed heaps of them :) Most of them are Ghibli films though
as anime becomes more mainstream, these films will eventually be seen as just that: films.
Kawaii...
Very disappointed... the most successful Japanese animated movie of all time and not a single scene of tentacle penetration... :/
You should see the directors cut.
Damn this old man likes romcom animes lol
It's more than rom com actually not a rom com at all more like comedy
