Good morning Peter (and club), I received yesterday my copy of Bonsai Masterclass - The definitive chapter (the new print of your famous book so difficult to find). The content of the book is outstanding with some part really useful but also difficult to find else ways (one example for all: the tips for arranging trees in a forest). The quality of the book is impeccable: the paper and the binding are top notch, the layout is functional and readable, and the pictures just great! I highly recommend this book to any bonsai enthusiast, you won’t be disappointed! I’d also like to thank you Peter for the nice words you wrote for me and Yoshie: it’s really something that we should remember each day! Thanks again and have a nice Sunday!

I just " rescued" my 1st bonsai and when I got home and really checked it out I realized it had been grafted and its a side graft and looks terrible! Its always going to show because its done at the middle of the tree. THANK U PETER FOR EVERY VIDEO! I'm learning so much.

I really appreciated Peter explaining the grafts at the beginning. I’m starting to advance my knowledge of Bonsai past the beginner stage and it was really appreciated:)

Good morning Sunday Morning Bonsai Breakfast Clubbers 🙏❤️🌳☕️🥐 I am currently going through a phase where I am obsessed with Japanese Black Pine at the moment. I would love to find a really nice small domed shohin JBP with a nice mature trunk.
So wonderful your work is. Especially that you don't waste equipment. I love that wire straightening trick too. You are giving me and courage to work on my little trees again. I love your show.
Thanks for being in the mood to share Peter, and good mind reading Josh. I was looking forward to the juniper air layering, I am in the middle of pruning my massive junipers in my front yard and was wondering if I could air layer. Another topic for another video. Can't wait, keep it up boys. Cheers!
Thank you so much. Your teaching technique - guiding your audience with a guided description telling us what you are planning, and why. Thank you again for sharing your talent and inspiring me to attempt something similar with a small, 2 year old, pine seedling I've planned to use in my first attempt to create a bonsai. (I will see if I can send you before and after pictures.)
Großartig, danke für dieses lehrreiche Video! Ich denke ich werde in den kommenden Tagen mal nach Rohmaterial Ausschau halten! Danke an dich Peter und Grüße an dein gesamtes Team.
Again as usual a great video on pines, thank you Peter, I think I have mentioned before I have all your books from over 20 to 30 years ago along with a large collection of other bonsai books but yours a very special to me.
Nice! And inspiring! Especially the last one! Personally, I use that (partially) spiral winding quite a lot, especially with rather young trees and fast growing trees. Works for me... Thank you for sharing!
Sir Peter always makes this look simple. My tree however looks like a Christmas tree where the lights have been left on too long! I need to watch some previous videos!! Lol
Thank you for making such a simple and straightforward video! I learned a handful of new things, and got some inspiration to move forward with a few trees that I wasn't feeling confident about. I really appreciate it.
Peter, over the last few months I've enjoyed all 479 of your videos. I have tried bonsai various times over the years, sadly not always successfully. Your videos have given me new knowledge and confidence to try again! I have one purchased cedar bonsai, and other trees I have found on our property, including hemlock, maples, and a golden rain tree. You have covered wiring trees to a great extent, it would be helpful to learn how to test and see when to remove wiring. I'm sure different trees hold shape sooner than others. Do you ever take wiring off too soon, how do you know? It would be great if you would spend a bit more time explaining your judgements and deer decisions that go into unwiring trees. We'd love to visit your nursery someday, sadly we could only return to the USA with a bare root bonsai which would surely die!
Josh is an excellent camera man...and ideal person for these videos. Good for him. Women are NOT ladies Peter !! How do you live with those endless planes overhead.
Question: What are they grafted to and why? It seems a larger seedling root, with a mature branch from a desired specimen tree to get instant ramification. Is this correct? My pines are not that mature looking, as volunteer seedlings.
Hi mr. Chan, I have a similiar "starter" white pine, however on the internet I mainly read it is best too prune in the fall or spring, but you are doing it mid summer. What is the best time to prune a starter white pine? Thank you in advance.
Peter, I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada, and recently purchased some dwarf Alberta pines along with 2 types of Juniper’s to start my first attempt at bonsai. Should I be bringing them inside during our winter (zone 3) or plant them in the ground?
If you grow from seed then the resulting plant will be subject to genetic variation so is not 100% guaranteed to exhibit the exact same characteristics of either parent plants even if the seed is said to "come true". Think of the child of a black man and a white woman - the child is neither 100% black nor 100% white... However, if plants are propagated from cuttings or by grafting then the characteristics are 100% guaranteed since you would be making genetic clones of the parent plant. Grafting is just a method for fusing a cutting (otherwise known as a scion in grafting terms) to a compatible rootstock to produce a single plant. The general rules for compatibility are that both plants (scion and rootstock) must be from the same botanical species or family of plants. Why use a different rootstock? Simple, the rootstock can be chosen so that it confers properties like drought tolerance, disease resistance, vigour etc that is not present in the scion to the scion. Grafted plants also have this property called precocity (ie maturity) that will allow it to bear flowers and form seeds at an earlier age than a plant grown from seed. Also, cuttings taken from some plants may not readily produce roots so, in those cases, grafting may be a more suitable way of propagating them.
It's done to help the tree. Normally a less robust tree is grated onto a vigorous rootstock that will cope with local climate better. Sometimes though I think it's overdone
